This seems familiar

John Calipari after Kentucky's 9-16 season in 2021:

"We've got to evaluate everything. At the end of the day, we know this is Kentucky and it was unacceptable what just happened. It's unacceptable what we went through. I'm going to look at whatever I've got to to make sure (it doesn't happen again). We all know why we're here: We want to compete and win national titles. I'm not satisfied. My whole mission now is to put this behind us. Let's continue to say, 'This is Kentucky. This is a standard.'"

If Mitch isn't going to get rid of him

Then there's no point in having a meeting. Changes in staff and strategy have already happened and nothing has changed. Mitch will lose any credibility he does have left if he keeps him. When changes were enforced last time, to me that meant that was him giving him one more chance. If he uses this excuse again, that just tells everyone he will never be held accountable. It's like telling your child you're going to give them to the count of 3 to behave, but you just keep restarting your count.
If he keeps him, the only way I'll ever respect this program again while under Mitch and Cal is if Mitch holds a press conference and admits that he's a lazy and gutless POS and apologizes to the fans for the last 5 years and apologizes for us having to go through it again until Cal retires.

Keep Cal

I have been suggesting Cal needs to go for at least several seasons now.

I have also been a critic of Mitch for putting us in this mess, along with other horrible decisions on his part.

But at this point, I actually think it may be better to let Cal have one more season to leave on his terms. I know this will anger many of you. It would have angered me yesterday. But here's why, and you'll understand neither is an endorsement of Cal or Mitch.

1. I assume it will allow UK to significantly restructure or void Cal's lifetime contract. I assume this is primarily what UK gains here. Cal doesn't want the shame of being fired, and this allows him to save face. The $ saved is significant and would allow UK to buy out another coach, attract a better future coach with higher salary, and/or creatively funnel the savings to NIL.

2. It will allow more time to secure a future coach. There is no way MB should make this decision himself (or have much input honestly), so this will take some time. I foresee others playing a bigger role if this is spread into 2025. I know that next season would likely be dismal under such a delayed scenario. I don't like this, and it would have been avoided if MB was more proactive. But he wasn't.

3. It will maintain good will between coach Cal, the UK program, and his former players. We may not enjoy feeling hostage here, but Cal's former players are a huge asset to the program, in terms of future donations but mostly publicity and marketing. We should avoid alienating them, and if retaining Cal an extra year does so, it is worth the short-term pain (but see point #2).

The alternative is to fire Cal, owe him a $hit load of money, quickly engage in a search where Mitch potentially makes a hire with a more limited bankroll and fewer options, and one where Cal and his players feel alienated from the program. I would rather delay the inevitable by one season because the advantages of doing so (points 1-3) promise a better future.

I offer this in part to give people some hope if it indeed comes to fruition.

But I get the anger. Trust me. And let me reiterate, I only say this IF Cal restructures and stays on 1 more season. Otherwise, forget it.

Should have known after Shaedon Sharpe…

Either Cal got played, or much more likely, he was in on that scam, and it should have been all people needed to see to conclude Cal is done.

If he got played, that’s downright embarrassing and shows his level of apathy. That crap doesn’t happen to other elite coaches.

The more likely scenario of him being in on it shows he’s agenda driven, and UK winning doesn’t make it anywhere on that agenda. Lots of other not so subtle clues that Cal is 100% agenda driven and winning means squat. Get his a$$ out!

Let's organize a fire CCC party and make it BIG

The power of coming together is what has changed the world more than anything. Once a group is established, it easily grows if observers can really relate to it's cause. I could see a group of 50 to 100 growing and causing a major media wave in Lexington say maybe on the fountain steps across from RUPP!

Moving forward as fans

I love a lot of the discussion on this board but there are so many on here that already knows this guy can’t shoot (Knox, Richmond and Fland), that guy is too raw (Cyril), this guy is too young (Quaintance) this guy will take 3 years before contributing (Perry). Our record will be 17-15

Let’s go back to last year and remember the things that were being said. Sheppard will take 2-3 years to contribute, Dillingham can’t shoot, Bradshaw will never play a game in a UK uniform. Edwards will be our best freshman. We won’t be able to score.

Then, after all of those were proven false, UK finally has a team to get #9. We see that was also false.

And if we had the exact same roster as NC State, Iowa St or Clemson, all of the prognosticators on this board would have us only winning 10 games much less be in the Sweet 16 like those teams.

We will get a transfer or two, a few current players will stay and we will see how each of these freshman play. If the season turns bad, I think these last 5 years and especially the current situation will make next year Cal’s last. This meeting with Barnhart should lay that out so necessary changes that will have to be made.

As far as Cal goes. He has to adapt now. What he did from 2009-2017 worked great. It doesn’t work now. He better master a new method now or his time will be over next year.

I’m one that wants to make the coaching change now but that isn’t happening it don’t look like. So, as a fan, all I can do is cheer for the team and hope for the best.

My random thoughts……..

I’ve been saying Reed will not be back if he’s lottery. I now believe it’s possible if he’s not top 5. Contingent on massive NIL, which is in the works. Still think if he’s top 5 he’s likely gone.

DJ probably back; but this is more so because the kid just isn’t good enough yet to be drafted.

Freshman will struggle to score. If Reed is back, he will be good, but won’t have much shooting outside of him. Freshman will get bullied from the jump.

Next season will be much like this one and the last few. Routed in the Champions Classic. Lose games we shouldn’t. Win some we shouldn’t. Bounced early in both tourneys no matter how we’ve played toward end of season.

Lot of strife and drama throughout the season. Injuries. Players out for longer than seems they should be. No game plans, not running sets for shooters. Defense struggles.

Will get super nasty before the end; every one will be waiting for a tourney run that will not come.

Cal will be done and it will be much worse than it could have been right now.

I just don’t see next season being even as good as this one. Unless we get lot more back and get something real in the portal? Could get very ugly next season.

Oh well.

Protecting draft Stock.

I was reminded in a thread today that it’s is not the only time Cal has hurt a season protecting players draft stock. The worst was the greatest college team ever assembled. Almost everyone believes the reason for keeping that idiotic starting lineup on the floor together was to protect DJ and Edwards feeling and draft stock. Not cutting the center rotation down to Two was to protect Bradshaws. We played 10 men and all three centers in the loss to Oakland.
It wasn’t the first time…..
Coach trotted out the platoon system when surprisingly WCS and others came back. He now had returning talent and the newcomers. He decided to play them all equal minutes with that stupid platoon system. If he played the Returning guys and ran like the wind subing when tired we win a championship. Booker and Lyles are likely back as they only get 5 minutes a game to spell the starters. We may have won annother with them back. Instead he chose to protect draft stock and play them all equal minutes. We lost, everyone left and he called the draft the greatest night in Kentucky history. This wasn’t the first time he tanked a team to protect draft stock.
I see people sayReed might come back. Look at history Mr and Mrs Sheppard. If Reed passes up that money and comes back Cal will play a struggling freshman as many minutes as he gets. We NEED THIS GUY GONE.

NBA Scout says

A good friend of mine has been a scout for the Miami Heat for about 20 years. Dwayne Wade was his first draft year. I ran into him today and we talked for quite a while with much of it centered around UK, Cal, potential draft status of our players and Coach Rupp stories. He played for Rupp, thus the Miami Heat connection. He mentioned Dillingham was going to go high in the draft although there was concern about his size. They think he will score and score a lot but the question is , can he stop anyone. He is high on Antonio Reeves but some of the others are not as confident as he is in Reeves. He doesn't agree with their position on Reeves.
He doesn't think we have another player that will be drafted high, this year. All of our guys are potentially good to great college players but, (at this time), doesn't see any of them making a roster. He emphasized that he could be wrong and that he has missed before. He also believes that we will have several guys try to make the jump. Just sharing.
