Mitch Refusing Comment After The Game

I went back and listened to the post game show today and two observations MJ and Pilgrim made last night give me hope that Mitch is at his breaking point with Cal.

1. Kyle Tucker asked Mitch for comment on the game and Cal’s future and Mitch refused.

I didn’t think much of this at first because what can Mitch really say? But Matt brought up a good point. Mitch will usually give a comment that he feels bad for the players that the season is over. That they played hard but couldn’t make shots today yada yada. Matt said he’s never seen Barnhart completely refuse to comment at all. This gives me the feeling that not bringing Cal back is definitely on the table. If bringing Cal back next year were a forgone conclusion Mitch wouldn’t have dodged the question IMO.

2. Pilgrim was standing next to Mitch during the postgame presser and said that Mitch wasn’t hiding how he felt. He said that Mitch was making faces throughout like he was annoyed or disgusted with what Cal was saying at different points throughout the presser.

Mitch is usually an unflappable guy. He never shows much emotion and he’s always been very hard to read. Barnhart must’ve been next level pissed if he was so clearly annoyed that anyone could tell just by looking at him.

With no inside info coming out regarding how Mitch and the administration feel about the current state of the program and Cal’s future in it I thought these two observations do give us some idea of how fed up Mitch actually is. If Cal is back next year I don’t think it will be because Barnhart didn’t exhaust every possible avenue to figure out this buyout.

OT: The Culty Religious People Outside of Rupp Arena

Okay, no offense to religion here and I am all for free speech...

But these Amish looking people with megaphones yelling in my ear to repent sins for 2 blocks... Totally kill the vibe walking into Rupp Arena.

Now, Im not saying they don't have a right to free speech, but yeah, I really wish they didn't do that. It's some Fred Phelps level stuff. Why don't we just have political / faith rallies outside of all games?

that's all I've got. thanks for reading

The Ultimate What If

What if Coach Cal comes out with a statement to unite the fanbase? Something along these lines:

“I realize I lost my way. My intentions were good. I wanted to help these kids realize their NBA dreams, but I put that ahead of the program. I made promises to kids/parents about playing time. I felt I had to keep those promises and ended up not playing the best lineups. I didn’t adapt. I was stubborn and wouldn’t play zone, etc etc. I had a come to Jesus moment. I’m being paid to coach THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY. Program first!”

Would that cause us to give him one more chance to prove his words? I’m asking myself this question, because A. I’m totally off the Cal bandwagon & have been. B. I don’t think he’s leaving so I’m grasping for how next year doesn’t end up being a dumpster fire.

Any chance this happens? I would have said no - but the national media is killing him!

Questions that need to be asked

How Messy will this Divorce get? How long will it be drawn out? A week, month, year, two years? When does it start hurting recruiting? How long do we want to be the lead story and the laughing stock in College Basketball? Who blinks first? Calipari or Mitch? Depending on how it unfolds and eventually it will, who comes to Lexington to be the next Head Coach? Has being the Head Coach at UK lost some of the luster with every school paying Big Money Today??

I’ve seen Rupp, Hall, Sutton, Pitino, Smith and Gillespie all leave. All for different reasons. This one feels different (mainly because of social media). I’m hoping not but, This one could get Very Ugly.

If I’m Mitch

Realistically speaking I would meet with Cal and negotiate a buyout with an annuity.

I would like to see a soft landing. If needed let him announce next year is his last and he’s going to retire. Cal’s has some great moments for us.. in the past.

We should be good next year. We can survive Wagner Bradshaw Dillingham Ugo or Z leaving. Use the portal to add. I think last night will bring Reed back.

Gives UK time to ID the right replacement with an easier transition without a major exodus and rebuilding process. Don’t want to rush into the next hire and have to compete with other schools on a hire.

If I had to hire I would look hard at Todd Golden but would like to take some time to focus in and get input. Don’t rush into the hire.

Zone Defense

Isn’t it funny how Calipari and many of his supporters think a zone defense is bad? They come up with several reasons why they think it’s bad.

Some will say it shows a sign of weakness that you can’t guard man to man. Funny, Calipari played man defense 99% of the season and it showed a major sign of weakness. Every basketball analyst from every sport media outlet could see it. Every UK fan could see it too. Opposing coaches could see it as well. There was a reason that Oakland coach, Greg Kampe, and many of his players felt good about the matchup with UK. The whole world could see that UKs man to man defense was bad from perimeter to the paint.

Another reason Calipari and others say zone defense is bad is because it’s hard to rebound out of a zone. Again, Calipari played man most of the seasons and was consistently a bad rebounding team. Oakland played zone all day on UK and outrebounded them. It was only by one rebound, but keep in mine this is Oakland, we are talking about, not Oakland, California either. The Golden Grizzlies tallest player is 6’9”. Two players, Trey Townsend and DW Cole, had 20 rebounds between them. They are only 6’6” and 6’3”.

Another reason Calipari and others are against zone defense, is cause they say teams can shoot better against a zone. Well, UK just had one of their worst shooting games from the perimeter this season against a zone defense. Oakland, on the other hand, had one of its best perimeter shooting games this season while going against a man to man defense.

I think it’s funny how Calipari refuses to play a defense that has always given him problems when he faced them. It’s not like it has to be zone or man the whole game, but being able to switch up defenses to change the momentum of the game wouldn’t be a bad thing. With a strictly man to man defense, you are often only as good as your weakest link in defense. We had a lot of weak links in defense this season. I think a zone defense helps teach playing together as a unit better. It’s easier to play help defense and trap out of. Like I said, it doesn’t have to be strictly man or zone, but it would be nice to be able to change things up depending on what the other team is doing.

Cal was never going to leave UK for UCLA

I'm honestly more upset with Mitch Barnhart than I am John Calipari with this whole mess (and that's saying something). Cal was never going to leave Kentucky for freaking UCLA. Barnhart had leverage, he had the ability to come up with a deal that was more UK friendly. Instead, he got duped by a con artist like some 50 year woman on facebook.

Barnhart is the true culprit for this disaster IMO
