Nice! Been doing the separates thing for decades now. Still into tube equipment too. Sad thing, as an audio enthusiast my hearing is sub-par these days. No more golden ears. Life can be cruel.Nothing can bother me tonight. Because I received a new set of speakers (Sony CCS5), two Fosi Mono bloc amplifiers to run them through, and a mint condition copy of Bitches Brew. I've got it all setup and it is ridiculous to an entirely new level of sound. I was skeptical of those Fosi "monos" for the price. I've wanted to try two mono amps for 2channel stereo audio for awhile, but it's always been pretty expensive, until these came out. Capitalism is fantastic! (I didn't buy the Fosi VU meter amp switcher. It looks cool, but it's superfluous, and cost almost as much as the two "mono" amps together)
It is astounding that those 140 dollar a pair Sony speakers which are described as bookshelf (but they're a little larger) can produce the sound they do. They sound like 600 dollar speakers. They are unicorns. That is 270 for the amps, 140 for the speakers (I already had a nice turntable, but nothing audiophile snobbish over the top. I think it was in the 350 dollar range, and a lot of that was a cartridge upgrade) All together, that's under 800 bucks for something that will stack up to anything. Unless you've got a McMansion and need to fill up a 700 square foot den.

I tried telling that to just such an audiophile with his own, in house recording studio (early 90s). He was so obsessed with the ultra extreme sounds but they were lost in the playback on regular to great equipment, as well as adding nothing to the actual quality of his creative work. They actually worked against it in some of the pieces he put together. We didn't talk much after the critique he asked for, but I was glad to come to the very realization of which you're speaking.
There is an art and an engineering to great and beautiful sound. I realized how great Boston's sound was a long time before that, but had no idea how brilliant the engineering was to keep everything so rich for common audio equipment until then.
Ask the US Army what he did smart guy.
