Memphis basketball falling apart..

Tubby is the luckiest man to ever coach. Got a team at UK that could win in spite of him. Had a few good teams that kept UK in contention but never got back to the FF but he had folks defending him and tolerating because of his race. An issue he took full advantage of.
He rode that title until the legs fell off and then ran off without meeting with his team when he realized folks had had enough.
All he's done since is ride off the tails of having been at UK for 10 years.
He's made millions for doinf just enough every now and then but he's a total joke now and has been for years.

I will always give him credit for the 98' run. He did make some amazing coaching moves during that tournament run. Tubby was always a good coach on the court, he just couldn't recruit worth a shit. But that 98' run was a masterful coaching job by him.

With that said, I'm glad he is gone.

Give me a break. Tubby took over a Four Seasons hotel and returned his key akin to a Red Roof Inn, I am being kind. Billy G was miserable person, not good coach etc. but the reason he was hired was they abysmal job Tubby had done. That roster when Billy G took over couldn't beat Morehead St. on a good night. Billy G was a disgrace and terrible choice. It was the mess Tubby left that got him hired in first place. Tubby really could not do a worse job the last 2-3 years unless you would have put some HS coach in the job.

Never would've thought things would turn sour as soon as they did for Tubby at Memphis, but then I sorta kinda did.

Yeah, shit hit the fan fast. I figured he'd do good for a year or two until he started bringing in the Bobby Perrys, Sheray Thomas', Orbzuts, Alleyenes, Adam Williams, and the Michael Porters of the world.

Tubby shat on the honeymoon. Memphis sign a prenup? Get ready to get bent over and nailed in the keister.

Man please. BCG inherited a roster that included Ramel Bradley, Joe Crawford, Derrick Jasper, and Jodie Meeks, with Patterson on the way depending on whom you believe. That's 4 legit college players and a great incoming freshman.

Now the roster Calipari inherited from BCG was absolute trash. I can't believe we have people making excuses for BCG lol.

" I think the bottom of the barrel is when a kid says thanks but no thanks and stays at the D2 school"

[laughing]

Oh boy......ole Tubbs hasn't changed a bit.

Don't remember who it was but one of the last few years here a kid told tubby thanks but no thanks and went to prep school!!!!

No wonder the rest of the country was pissed we wanted to get rid of tubby. They knew it would only be a matter of time before we found the homerun hire. Tubby definitely one of if not the most overrated coach in college basketball history.

Tubby doesn't change.

Patterson was not on the way when Tubby was still here. He probably would have gone to Florida. Pattersons mom said what sold him on UK was the chart gillispie made and the effort he put in. People closest to the recruitment at the time thought he would have followed Lucas to Florida had Tubby stayed.

You can make a case for green, but Tubby was headed to NIT's at UK. The future looked terrible

And I don't believe for a second green was a lock to UK. Cooluks easily see Tubby staying and Green going to State regardless.

Tubby had Kenny Freease committed too. He was a 5* center that ended up being a pretty good 4 year player at Xavier.

Remember when we were racist because we only put up with Tubby's shit for a decade?
I remember all the racist accusations from the media, but the most disappointing part was that we had many fans calling other fans racist for wanting him gone.
I'm far from racist, but I certainly remember accusations etc, because I was tired of his bs and wanted him out of Kentucky.

We lost a 4 star or 5 star center to Xavier, this was before they really took off. I mean we were losing recruits left and right.
I was able to gather information from someone who was there. Stories were unbelievable.

Brandon Wright and his family wanted to come up during Summer in May, Tubby told him he could not do it because he and family were on vacation. This was when UK was perceived leader and Wright had said favorite team growing up was UK and Ron Mercer teams etc..
Tubby was not even over seas or traveling that far away . Could have easily made it in if wanted.
-George Felton told Tubby that higher ranked kid in Cleveland Tn Vince Yarbrough was not coming here, he was going to go with HS coach and not AAU who was pushing UK. Felton said Prince is better and I will get him, since 2 years before he recruited top 10 player for Oregon St in LA. Felton told him how it was coming about but Tubby was left holding back on Vince. Thank goodness for Felton, Tubby did not want Tay, said he was too skinny.
-Marquis Estill was blowing up in Richmond, Tubby comes in during late Spring and Summer and sees local news. They announce that UT and about 10 other schools offered him scholarship. Tubby had no idea who the kid was and started making phone calls that night and next day on Sunday. Finally offered.
-Steve Smith had to beg and plead Rigot to get Tubby to take look at Rajon Rondo, Smith said Rondo was by far the best PG he had ever coached. Rigot finally got Tubby to relent and look and offer. It was mainly due to UK being pretty bad and Tubby needing some players. He did not want to offer and did not want to get involved because he had heard harsh rumors on Rondo. All coaches vouched for him but Tubby was so inept and out of recruiting loop that he could not and would not make good recruiting calls.
No organization and his work ethic was awful.

George Felton was and will be remembered as one of top 5-10 asst. coach recruiters of all time. He recruited for Cremins all his great players and teams, for Gosh sakes recruited a top 5 class at Oregon St. He signed Stone, Bogans, Prince and those guys. Tubby had one kid he recruited in his tenure to be first rounder. Think Rondo was second but it was awful. UK was coming off 3 straight championship games and The Tubster just completely ran it in ground.

Tubbys seat was severely hot. I don't think we could know for certain which players would have came with all the issues uk was about to have to work through reguarding staff changes etc. tubby was only going to be extended 2 more years. Thank God our fans make the needle move.

Freese wasn't committed anyway was he? I thought he lost him.

Tubby losing Brenden Wright was pitiful. The family was literally throwing him at us.

I thought we lost both him and green after tubby left but it's been 10 years so I could be misremembering.

Either way your first paragraph is right. If other teams came after those kids it may have been hard for a coach firmly on the hot seat, that also didn't want to work for it, to hold their commitments.

Tubby losing Brenden Wright was pitiful. The family was literally throwing him at us.

They lost him due to pace of play, Tubby and them half assed recruiting, his HS coach was friends with Roy and was former coach at Science Hill in Johnson City Tn, did not like UK much and was pushing for UNC. He dropped Vanderbilt and Kevin Stallings and his son were best friends with Brandan, Stallings pushed him to UNC and also was great friends with Roy. He said UK was train wreck not in so many words and he did not want to play against them. UK and Tubby were not producing pro's much at that moment, the allure of late 90's had dwindled.

Tubby and staff were out worked most definitely but fact was UNC was rising and UK was havng team turmoil and a lot of pace of play issues. UK should have wrapped this recruitment up with a lot of work the Summer before and Spring. He visited the first weekend of UL game. Total seat of pant operation by UK and their recruiting efforts. I lived at the time about 2 minutes from Brentwood high so know a lot of particulars. I knew when he came back from visit that he was not coming. It was either Duke or UNC from Late August to October.

Remember when Tubby was here and said it was just basketball and seemed to insinuate we took it too serious. Lack of seriousness and lack of energy, yet he manages to stay employed.

Looks like Tubby still HATES the AAU system and the games you have to play to succeed in recruiting. That, as much as anything is why he tanked at UK . Well, that and his system. Scores in the 40's and 50's just don't allow kids to showcase their skills.

Yes - BCG was infinitely worse than Tubby. At least Tubby stumbled on a diamond in the ruff occasionally - a lot like Crean actually. BCG was the worst evaluator of talent I've ever seen. Literally every guy he recruited or took a commitment from were either woeful or headcases except for Liggins.

Not a Tubby fan but he did have some of my favorite players. Daniels, Hawkins, Bogans, Prince, Craword, Ramel, I think those were all Tubby's. oh and forgot about Sheray Thomas..not!

I give him credit for the NC but what were those "amazing coaching moves"?

The lineups he used was probably the most glaring move. In the Duke game, after McLeod called Duke's final TO with like 5 mins to go, Tubby never stopped the game again with a TO until a few seconds were left. He put in fresh legs at McLeod's TO and then never gave Coach K a chance to make an adjustment with a stoppage. He realized the situation and kept the team from fouling or calling a TO to not allow K to make an adjustment. Also from that game, it was a great move to utilize Heshimu and run the offense through him in the 2nd half.

Other than that game, you look at the teams we faced and the deficits that we faced during that tournament, including being down 10 to Stanford and down 10 at the half to Utah. You don't make those kind of comebacks consistently in the NCAA tournament without making adjustments. Tubby made great adjustments with the lineup and on the court that really helped us win the tournament. People forget that we were not the most talented team in the country that year and came into the season around 10th in the polls (somewhere around there, can't quite recall).

Again, I'm glad Tubby is not here anymore and he was a horrible recruiter but I thought he did an amazing job in 98' for us to win the title. That's just my opinion obviously, you may disagree if you like.

Chuck Hayes and Gerald Fitch were pretty good finds by Tubby.

I still think something happened during the Chris Duhon recruitment that really soured him on recruiting in general. I remember him working really hard to land him. That's about the last time I thought he put in the work on a recruit.

Yeah, his big move was doing nothing. Nothing amazing about anything he did. The players? Yes. Tubby? No.

Video Coordinator

Maybe so but Memphis does list him as an assistant coach and this is the description on the website:

"Saul Smith played for me also, and has worked in this state at Tennessee Tech. We have brought in guys that had connections to this region. Saul played on the National Championship team at Kentucky in 1998, and is a knowledgeable coach who has excellent contacts – as all of these guys do – around the country.

Video Coordinator

I am not sure why he isn't listed as a Video Coordinator if that is his job:

Smith begins his first season as assistant coach with the Memphis Tigers after spending the previous three seasons at Texas Tech as the director of video production and team video coordinator.

While working with the Red Raiders he assisted the staff in breaking down game and practice video along with statistical metrics.

This season will mark his 10th season as an assistant coach, including six seasons at Minnesota. He oversaw the Golden Gophers' guard development and ball handling improvement. He developed five players who would end their Minnesota careers on the program's 1,000-point scoring list.
