Cal Trending Down

We got to the Sweet 16 by beating Buffalo and then lost to a mediocre K-State team WITHOUT their best player.

If you’re saying “in the hunt” is losing in the Sweet 16 to a not good team, I think you’re being pretty loosey goosey with the definition of in the hunt.

I didn’t remember them minus their best player. the only thing i truly remember about that game is their coach’s crazy wife.

Wichita State has the coach with the crazy wife. (Unless Weber’s wife is crazy too)

Huh? That was Wichita State in 2017. We won that game.
Dean Wade played a few minutes for KSU, but they were getting anything they wanted, so he didn't push it (foot injury) and sat the rest of the game.

A better coached mid major took them out.

Cal’s biggest problem IMO is that he is all about the NBA, not KY. He wants to run an nba college team.
This worked when he had a team loaded with top nba prospects.

Remember, Cal almost left when the twins decided to come back. Supposedly he was halfway out the door. If the losses start to pile up, I have no illusions that he won't bolt for a NBA job.

Cal didn't have the lifetime contract when he almost bolted back then, and he's not the hot commodity now that he was back then either.

The NBA ain't knocking on Cal's door now the way it was five years ago. And here's he's now got the ultimate dream contract that essentially makes it impossible for UK to fire him. I don't see him leaving for awhile, regardless of how things go.

I don’t want Cal gone . But I am frustrated with the way he calls the game offensively.

This team should be running a whole lot more . A lot of these guys are dreadful in the half court
I mean I think that’s the way cal would like to play but you gotta get stops to run. We have to get there defensively the other things will fall in place

Well I would love to hear who you losers think could replace Cal. Most of you live in a dream world.

and then yet again loses in the FF which we’ll celebrate as a huge victory and hang a banner for.

1-11 not good enough
1st Cal is 1-10, not 1-11. Secondly, the NCAA tournament began in 1939 and we have won it 8 times, 9.8 percent of the time. Cal has won 10 percent of the tournaments we have played in, and has knocked on the door as far as being in contention more consistently than Hall, and Smith, and slightly more than Pitino. You may hate him but facts are facts. More UK final fours than Pitino, Hall and Smith.

What bothers me the most is I dont get upset with the losses anymore.Hell,I couldn't tell you the names of half of the recruits they have next year. The state of college basketball is pathetic with the one and done The first 5 years of Cal were wonderful but now as the final 8 losses start to add up,this movie is getting all too familiar.Teams aren't intimidated by us anymore.

You've got your facts all messed up. The coach's wife game was an entirely different year and entirely different team.

And, no, the 2018 team was in NO way a legit contender. That was a dysfunctional mess of a season. The worst team Cal's had other than the NIT season.

This reads exactly like your post after Seton Hall last year.

Next 2 games will tell us a lot.

I already know enough. There's no way I'll be watching the next two games or maybe even more. This is a coaching or recruiting disaster. If more evidence is needed then this should remind us all of a lesson we should not have forgotten. Pay a man too much and this is what may happen. They lose their edge, roll over and pretend to be busy.
And when the Cats make the final four this year will you still say Cal is "trending down" ?

What about the tournament runs we’ve had against teams we had no business beating and did?

How many tourney wins over "teams we had no business beating" have there actually been?

I can think of only one (the 2011 Ohio State win) that I'd definitely put in that category. There's certainly been more tourney losses to teams we had no business losing to.

Yeah, that team only had like 4 5 star McDonald's All Americans. Ragtag group of scrappy underdogs.

Every dominate team we’ve had (10, 12, 15) all had multiple top 5 recruits. That’s the only way the system truly works. When you’re losing 80% of your scoring, assists, and rebounding every season you’re gunna play like crap unless you fill the void with more high level top recruits.

Overreaction. Shocking to see that on this forum.

They were one play from final 4 last year. And could've won it all if they got there.

Yes Evansville sucked and this game sucked. There is no great team this year. Just a bunch of good teams. Right now everyone outside of Gonzaga is trending down.

not to pick on your comment, you’re one of the most sane posters here, but I hate that “we were one play away from this and then we could have won that”. We didn’t. We got smacked around way too many times last year and it’s happening again. Almost every team can say what if. Enough of the what if’s

Kansas is trending down? They’re the best team in the country

It amazes me that the majority of our fanbase is ok with making it to the sweet 16 or elite 8 every year. Lol it's like as long as he wins a few tourney games hes GOD...and everyone's excuse is when we dont make the final 4 is well "kansas lost, duke lost" ect....we are KENTUCKY!

All of this is just a complete overreaction.

And when we go on to beat Ohio St., these threads will stop popping up.

Until the next loss.

Or maybe the majority of the fanbase just realizes that expecting a run of several titles just isn't reasonable.

it's not about being ok with things. So Cal leaves and we get another coach, can you guarantee me we'd win more titles with a new coach? You can't. Whoever is coach here will still have to deal with the fact that we are talking about a one and done tournament.

Not specific to just UK tho. There isn't a D1 team that's going to go on a run like we did 96-98 or Florida did. It's just not going to happen anymore.

I don't think it is just talent alone. It's more the mixture of players on Cal's roster, too many guys with similar skills that lack the ability to shoot from the perimeter. One of the downfalls of the 2010 team was a lack shooters. In 2015 we had Booker and Ulis who were good shooters but it seemed like they played a secondary role to the Harrison Twins.

its not about wanting Cal gone but its also not living in fear of Cal leaving.

Tubby left we got BCG, yes it sucked but it was fixed and we got Cal.

The basketball world doesn't begin and end with Cal and more importantly, UK shouldn't yield to Cal's pet projects over their goals as a program.

I don't want Calipari gone , at the same time, his approach isn't delivering on the promises made, and now we as a fanbase are making excuses as to why instead of expecting change.

What if’s and blaming refs are for losers.

We were in the hunt even though not a great team. two or three points from e8 in the loss to kst.

Only in the hunt because the #1 and #4 seeds in UKs path were upset. Bracket opened up wide but they couldn’t take advantage.

If Cal leaves, we'll find another good coach and we'll be fine in the end.

Tho he's been here 10 seasons and been to four final fours. I'm gonna need a little bit more years of our team just completely stinking before I say he's not delivering on his promises.

again, I'm not advocating for him leaving. We're saying close to the same thing, I just have a shorter shelf life of allowing him to rest on his laurels.

@JRowland i just reported this one in - I’m not involved but more name calling and personal comments from some of the same cast of characters we were talking about. They need to be shown the door if they can’t discuss without the condescending bs they seem to only know how to do. Thanks

You mean the same relentless bashing of our singular basketball program and coach we have to endure after each loss? That comes from the same cast of characters that want to sling mud at the program without rebuttal.

I don't think we necessarily even have bad shooters. We just do nothing to get them good shots.
I think it’s that and the fact that offense and shooting isn’t emphasized enough during practice. Cal has said on many occasions that he wants the players to get their shots up on their own time because he doesn’t have enough practice time to do it. I’m sure that helps some, but they obviously need more shooting drills in practice. Isn’t that what coaching is for? There’s a difference in shooting around with no one guarding you and shooting in game situations. We have a serious issue with how we handle coaching our offense. Either that or we just recruit crappy shooters. We repeatedly heard that this should be our best shooting team under Cal. Well! We’re waiting!

Which is an nba style offense without nba caliber players. These guys can’t drive and finish, or create their own shot and knock it down.
We dont run an NBA offense, we run an antiquated 90's college basketball offense. NBA offenses features a ton of small ball, 4 out 1 in, spacing, and 3 point shooting. The post dominant big man is dead in the NBA, Cal plays 2 post guys at a time. Our offense is nothing like an NBA offense.

A few bash, but they are in the minority. Pointing out some obvious deficiencies is not bashing. This is a forum for discussion, both positive and critical.
