As we’ve saw with Nc St last year and Hubert Davis in 2022, bad teams can simply get hot in March and that doesn’t mean you have the right coach. Wolfpack have a proud and storied history and I’d love to see them return to some level of prominence. Good on them to move on and hopefully they can steal some thunder from the Cheats and the Flops in that state soon
Proves once again that putting automatic extensions in contracts is stupid. Dude got 2 seasons added to his contract last year after winning the ACC tournament and making the final four. So, it added two years to his buyout and he’s fired a year later.
Also means hiring a coach because of one March run is very short sighted. It’s crazy how many guys have jumped from the mid majors to a power conference solely based on 1 or 2 wins in March.

They wanted to fire him last year and he struck lightning in a bottle. He earned this past year with that crazy post season run. That automatic extension probably saved State from havening to give him a better contract. Win win really.
But is there a better way? Those teams need a coach. You can't force Izzo to leave Michigan State to go to Missouri. Assistants aren't any more guaranteed. I'd rather choose the Mid major coach that has some success in the tournament over the ones who don't even make the tournament. And just hope you get a Dennis Gates and not a Tony Barbee.
No, He was hired because he had rebuilt UTEP and A&M from the ashes. Everyone wanted to hire him. Arkansas thought they had hired him.
His Acie Law team moved the ball so smoothly, and this at a time when Tubby’s offense had badly stagnated. I was thrilled with that hire. Short honeymoon, though.

No one will ever convince me if he hadn’t beaten UL at Rupp he would’ve been hired. Yes he rebuilt those programs but he wasn’t ready for the big time.
Correct. He was so much more than that one win. He was the next star coach. He was destin3d to fail with his problems, and Kentucky job accelerated it.

The one dumb thing I don't understand. We couldve had Izzo. But he had the final four. Absolutely asinine you can't wait one week to hire a guaranteed hall of famer. I'll never understand the rush.
I don’t mind power programs hiring a mid major. I think it’s a mistake hiring a guy solely based off one tournament. Gates wasn’t hired bc of a tournament win (he never won a tournament game. He was hired bc he took over a program that finished 2nd to last in their conference and he won the conference title in his 2nd and 3rd year.
But you are absolutely right that hiring college coaches, in both football and basketball can be a total crap shoot.

Eh, it worked out. Izzo here wouldn't have done well imo. I mean, let's look at what he's done at MSU. Yeah, he's had some decent runs. But the man hasn't won a title in 25 years. Probably won't this year either.
We had to suffer through our cycle of Legend-Caretaker-Drunk but we got Cal and that was what we need for the time.
He had personal problems and those are definitely going to make it clear he wasn’t ready for a big time job. It wasn’t, however, due to his coaching ability. Gillispie was an exceptional basketball mind and he wasn’t a one hit wonder by any means. His first year at UTEP, the cupboard was beyond bare to the tune of a 6-24 record. Within a single year, Gillispie led the Miners to a 24-8 record. This led to him getting a rapid promotion to a Texas A&M program that was a complete dumpster fire at the time. The 2003-04 Aggies went 7-21 under head coach Melvin Watkins and failed to win even one single Big 12 game. The next season, Billy Gillispie led them to a 21-10 record, finishing 8-8 in conference. I’ll spare boring you with all the details of his continued success from there because I’d bet your familiar with why he was such a hot commodity and had such high stock at the time. Revisionist history will have everyone tell what a failure the guy was. People rarely discuss what a “home run hire” he was, because it hasn’t exactly aged well.

He was on the hot seat last year until they stole a bid and then made the run that they did. Can't say I'm too shocked at this move by NC State.
Yep, note my post above. 8 year tenure. Only one advancement in three tries. That's not going to keep a job at any D1 school with any kind of tradition, let alone one with two titles.

8 years is a long time for the kind of results they had. It was a move they needed to make.
Will Wade should have been in jail for wire fraud, but that's neither here nor there apparently. Not sure if a major D1 program takes a chance on him with his past history (The man had FIVE major Level I violations. Almost unheard of.) And even now, what he did wouldn't still be legal. (He was paying players directly or trying to).
Wade is also not that good imo. He's an ok coach, but even when he was making "big ass offers" he was getting his butt handed to him in the SEC more often than not. Let's look:

Outside of his second season at LSU, he was a big pile of "Meh" in the SEC. Now, he did well at VCU and now at McNeese but he's definitely not the rockstar some think he is when he has to compete in a real conference.
Now if the ACC continues to suck, and there's not indication it won't, he might be able to make a foot hold there. I bet NC State does go after him, because they are desperate.
I was off the bus quick, his first ever real game showed me he couldn’t cut it here.
