Get to know UK's new WR Coach Daikiel Shorts, Jr.

The hire of UK's new WR Coach Daikiel Shorts has been finalized. This is an important move for Liam Coen, whose receivers have underachieved this season. The role of a position coach is to recruit talent and develop it. On first blush, Coach Shorts looks like a nice upgrade for us.

Coach Shorts is relocating from the Univ. of Houston, where head coach Dana Holgorsen was recently fired. It has been reported that new UH head coach Willie Fritz tried to retain Coach Shorts. Our new WR coach has a reputation for outstanding interpersonal skills. He is 29 years old.

Coach Shorts was born in Clayton, NJ. He attended Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear, DE and Eastern Christian hs in Elkton, MD. Although lightly recruited, he became UWV's leading receiver in three of his four seasons there. In 2016, he was elected team captain and was named to the all Big 12 second team. He is the 5th-leading career receiver in UWV foorball history. He then spent 2017 on the Buffalo Bills' practice squad.

Coach Shorts was on UH's staff for three seasons. Under Coach Shorts, UH WR Nathaniel Dell was named an All American after leading the nation in pass receptions in 2022. Three of his UH WRs were named all Big 12. During Coach Shorts' three seasons as UH WR coach, UH ranked 5th nationally in receiving TDs, 12th in pass receptions, and 16th in receiving yardage.

Cal on Edwards

“But what happened was [guarding] number 3, he went under the screen 3 different times and the kid got 3 threes. Well then, you can’t be in the game. I’m not mad at ya, I love ya. Wanna stay with me tonight at my house? C’mon, I’ll make you a pizza.”

😂😂😂 I was burying Cal tonight, but dude knows he has a squad. Knows if he can bring Edwards along, shit is gonna get real scary for everyone else.

UofL's record in the past four seasons

As we look forward to the upcoming "red-out" at YUM, a stat to warm you heart: Going back to the beginning of the 2021 season, UofL is 34 and 61. That's a 35% win percentage. That percent will go down as the season progresses, because there's no way they win a third of their ACC games.

Now back to that red-out: Methinks it will be closer to a blue out. Probably about even.

UK's Non-Con December Schedule in 2001

Started thinking about how Tubby used to schedule big Saturday games in December, typically on CBS.

Then it hit me what a December we had in 2001-02.

-12/8 at Rupp -- North Carolina -- Tayshaun hits 5 in a row
-12/18 at Meadowlands -- Duke -- Jimmy V Classic against defending champs
-12/22 at Indy -- Indiana
-12/29 at Rupp -- Louisville -- Pitino's return to Rupp

Basketball Coach Cal Show News & Notes - Dec. 18

Greetings HOB. I'll be listening along with Coach Cal's weekly radio show again tonight and providing PARAPHRASED notes and tidbits for those of you who aren't able to follow along with the show live. Show is just starting here at 6 ET. Stay tuned...

* Calipari: I was so proud of these kids. I was proud at halftime, even though we had given up a lot of that lead. UNC is a team that outrebounds everybody, and we worked hard to win the rebound column in that game. Thought they had 4-5 real careless turnovers in the game, trying to do something too hard instead of making the easy pass. But, overall, showed a real will to win. When they went up 1 late in the game, we were not moved. We just kept playing. That's a great sign for this team. Unbelievable atmosphere at the game, both team's fans really showed up strong. Great win against a good team that has some nice wins this year.

* We're light years away from where we'll be if we can just stay the path. I'm so excited to get on the court and work with these kids every day... Got a good group. Can we just keep growing?

* Says Justin Edwards should be the best defender on the floor for the Cats. Has that size and ability but was giving up too much in the UNC game to Ryan. He's got to be that next guy to come on and be a bigger factor.

* Nine blocked shots show the big guys are having an impact, and they're doing it while not changing their style on the offensive end of the floor.

* Leach notes that Cal is now the winningest active coach in CBB since Cliff Ellis retired. That's nice, Cal says, but he's never looking to compare himself to another coach. His dad used to tell him you're never as good or as bad as you might think you are. Truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

* Noted he got an unbelievable text from Rob Dillingham's mom today. During a recruiting visit, Cal had told them how hard it was going to be if Rob came to UK. He was going to be challenged and coached hard. She told her son that's where she wants him to go after hearing that. He sent her back a note thanking her for trusting him with her "baby."

* Caller says Adou looked different in UNC game. Cal said he's being challenged, and he's fighting for his time. Blocked three shots, rebounded. Just needs to keep working on his J.

Ole Miss and the Portal

Landed juice wells and are also the expected landing spot for top portal candidate Walter Nolan. This in addition to aln the other high profile names that came in.

What exactly are they doing that others (and UK) are not. Ole Miss isn’t exactly the football powerhouse or heavy NIL cash cow you’d expect.

In fact I’d say their NIL and football history are very similar to UK.
