Congress was not “flying a Ukraine flag.” They were exchanging flags.
If Mexicans living in the US Southwest declared independence and wanted to unite with Mexico, should we take a neutral stance? Russians moved into the Donbas when Ukraine was an unwilling part of the Soviet Union.
When the USSR collapsed, Ukraine achieved its independence. Its recognized territory included the Donbas and Crimea. When Putin took power, he wanted all ethnic Russians to be reunited with “the Motherland.”
He didn’t encourage them to just emigrate back home. Rather, he fomented rebellion in the countries where they had settled. He wanted the expats back and the land they lived on.
Ukraine is just in its fight to evict Russian troops from its post-USSR borders. I suspect they will now also evict the Russians who settled in Ukraine during the days of communism.

It’s Russian propaganda to be a firm believer that Ukraine/NATO started the war, or that Ukraine could have prevented the war and has no right to defend itself. If that offends some in here, tough shit.

The current cia director told everyone in dc that trying to get Ukraine into NATO would lead to war. You can argue that "we" are willing to take that chance because Ukraine in NATO is vital to US security, yea... make that argument, but people were constantly told that their behavior would provoke Russia to invade Ukr. The Minsk agreement was a workable way forward 'if' we wanted peace. The fact that we kept taking steps to escalate this shows we wanted this war to happen.
Yes Ukr has every right to defend itself but Russia also see's our actions in Ukr as a threat to their country so they are going to defend themselves. You have to really look at this through a very narrow lens to put all the blame on Putin and not one bit on the west.

Putin thought he would roll into Kiev in three days and install another Russian puppet. He poisoned Yushenko, installed Yanukovych, worked against Poroshenko and invaded Ukraine when they elected Zelensky. He knew the Ukrainian people would not willingly stand for a government run by Russia.
He had his man Lukashenko in Belarus and was determined to have a similar set up in Ukraine.

I don’t think “democratically elected president” means what you think it means to Russians. To them he is to be their ruler and the Duma is to be his rubber stamp. That’s how backwards those folks are.
They don’t have much experience with a democratic system. Their history is strewn with one dictator after another.
Ukraine was told no by NATO in 2008. Now, of course, it’s a foregone conclusion that Ukraine will be part of NATO some day. Putin shot his wad all over Eastern Europe and the consequence is that Russia is despised by most of the former USSR states and want nothing to do with their former rulers.
Russia has the right to “defend itself?” From what, a ground invasion by the West? Do they have a right to set up puppet states as buffers between them and their imagined enemies?
Russia and its military may be stuck in the WWII mindset but the rest of the world has moved on. They’re fighting a trench war in Ukraine only because both armies are equipped only for that.
There would be no trenches if the West fell upon Russia. Air superiority would be quickly established by the West and Russia would succumb very quickly to the pounding they would receive.

That would depend on lots of factors. First, is the United States the same type violent, despot led bully that Russia is?
If Russia were led by a Stalin/Hitler love child, what they did in Ukraine would STILL have zero bearing on our interests. If anything, Russia has shown in the last year that they present NO conventional threat to NATO. Pretending that they’ll be rampaging towards Warsaw and Berlin if we don’t dump hundreds of billions into a known kleptocracy is so ludicrous that it’s on par with Russia collusion and 2 weeks to slow the spread.

They can’t even properly define what a war hawk is, their definition changes daily. It’s a fictional definition in their own imagination. They would have called Churchill a war hawk in the early days of WWII, true story
