MLB Draft Round 16 Last Round

Only a round and a half left yall... can we get this done by Sunday night?
Give me Ronald Acuna Jr

@KopiKat

Need some middle infield support, outfield too. Adds bats production with his >400 career home runs. Barely missed joining ultra-exclusive 300-300 club. Good base speed. one of the most naturally gifted I've ever seen play this game. Superb career could have been better. Sportscenter highlight regular . . . Alfonso Soriano

Back to back picks with guys i went back and forth on-- good stuff.

@podgejeff_ up

I need a backup catcher. And this guy is still available. Before Johnny Bench he was considered the greatest catcher in National League history. In 1930 he batted almost 340 with 37 home runs. He was also a solid defensive catcher. In 1935 he won the MVP. He was the first catcher to hit over 20 home runs in a season and he routinely led the league in caught stealing percentage. He was a six time all star, four time World Series participant and a hall of famer. Not bad for a catcher in the age of Babe Ruth, Brooks Hornsby and Lou Gehrig.

I'll take the Cubs legend Gabby Hartnett. Hats off to whoever took Lombardi, it broke my heart.

@UKNorse is up to bat.

4th all time in saves and likely will be a HOF once his career ends.

I'll take K-Rod Francisco Rodriguez as my closer. 6X allstar, 2X Rolaid Relief winner and was in the top four 3X in Cy Young voting which is impressive for a closer.

@Cowtown Cat you are up

I think someone took him a few rounds ago

Alright I'm going with a guy who just started his career.

At the ripe age of 25 already has 2 allstar appearances and 2 Hoffman Reliever awards and is a strikeout specialist.

I like this pick more than K-Rod anyways LOL

Josh Hader!!!

I need to finish my team with two backup players, one of which needs to be a true utility player. Coming into this, I never would have dreamed I would be taking this player, but he completely fits my needs at this time. Switch hitter that played at least 100+ career games at second, third, short, left and right plus another 97 in center. He was a world champion with the 89 A's and collected over 2000 hits. Mr. Tony Phillips.

To round out my club, I was down to four players, but this fella checks quite a few boxes. Another big time clubhouse leader, right handed stick off the bench, and one of the best clutch run producers of all time. He's mainly known as a first baseman but began his career at third. He was a 3 time world champ, 7 time all star and was rightfully inducted into the hall of fame with over 2700 hits and nearly 400 homers, including 25 in the postseason. This brings me full circle from the beginning of the draft. Going balls to the wall with the greatest team of my lifetime, my 5th member of the Big Red Machine, The Doggie, Tony Perez.

@Cowtowncat is up again.

Shit. Hate to think I wouldn’t take the all time leader in postseason wins with the second highest strikeout total in playoff history. Let me get the lefty, Andy Pettitte. IMO, that’s a steal as my final pick. I believe my roster in complete now.

Nice grab. Fun fact: Andy’s real last name was Smith, but as a child he had a problem with hitting the family dog. His parents would always yell, “Andy, pet it!” and ended up changing his name.

@podgejeff_
Interesting Roger Maris story. Roger was best friends with Whitey Herzog (aka The White Rat). The winter after his 61 homer season, he helped Whitey build his house. Whitey said Roger showed up early every morning with a lunch box ready to work. Whitey said he wouldn't take a dime for it.

Mike Shannon (the Cards announcer) said a ground out to SS or 2B to drive in a run from third was a Roger Maris RBI. Roger and other Cards use to hunt in the off season in far western Ky near where the Ohio and Miss. rivers meet.

For my last pick, a backup outfielder, I will be taking Andrew McCutchen. He brings 20+ homeruns and steals, good defense, and a 300+ average. A complete player in the outfield and a pretty good last pick if I do say so myself.

My final team:
pitcher - roger clemens
pitcher - gaylord perry
pitcher - zack greinke
pitcher - Corey Kluber
closer - bruce sutter

c - joe mauer
1b- rafael palmeiro
2b - rogers hornsby
3b - eddie mathews
ss - cal ripken jr
rf - Frank Robinson
lf - christian yelich
cf - dale murphy

bench - Alan Trammell (backup infielder)
bench - Andrew McCutchen (backup outfielder)
bench - Gabby Hartnett (second catcher)

My team is clearly built on big average/power on offense with speed in a few key positions at the top of the lineup. Pitching is a mixed bag, with Clemens and Kluber being power pitchers, while Perry and Greinke bringing a more thinking pitcher's approach (while still being capable of bringing power since we're obviously talking about the best of the best here). Sutter brings more of that tricky style of pitching with that monster split finger.

The bench can adequately back up every position on the field if need be without much if any offensive drop off.

Guys like Yelich, Murphy, and to a lesser extent Hornsby can all bring speed on the basepaths at the top of the order while not sacrificing power, with Trammell and McCutchen being able to provide leadoff speed/power off the bench if need be.

Every single hitter on my team brings double digit home run power and a near 300 career average, with career years being much higher.

@csrupp - on deck

Last round please make sure everyone has their positions covered. I'm anticipating starting the tournament on Tuesday if we can get this done tomorrow.

Yeah, so I held off 16 rounds and I'm STILL able to draft as my closer, the TERMINATOR . . . Tom Henke ?? Wow! Thanks gang. That guy was EVIL back in the late 80s / early 90s. Like, one of the most intimidating closers ever is all. Well over 300 saves. Lord knows how many had he actually played on consistently good teams his career. His superb 1.092 whip sustained over a decade and a 1/2 as a closer speaks for itself though. 6-1/2 feet tall . . . Throwing major gas through those geek wire rim nerd specks. Major grab. Best part? I barely need him! Gibson, Spahn, Feller . . . this trio owns the complete game claim and now they've got Tom Henke.

Also, my previous pick, Alfonso Soriano, hasn't been updated. Don't want anyone to get unnecessarily excited. kk

@csrupp in the box !

Good team there. I actually have two or three utility players in my starting lineup. Then, of course, there’s Zobrist.

I knew this guy was a good closer but prior to this draft I’d never done a deep dive on his stats & had no idea how dominant he really is. He averages 42 saves/162 games (346 career) along with a 2.08 career ERA, including 4 seasons under 2.00, with his best being a paltry 1.01 in 2012. His K/BB ratio is insane too, averaging 15 K & 4 BB/9 innings with a CAREER WHIP under 1.000 (0.945). He’s a 7 time all-star & has led the NL in saves 4 times. I’ll take Craig Kimbrel.

Should probably not undersell your potential line-up strategy with Rose in it. And with Phillips for that matter. Rose can play outfield and Phillips 3rd. And it isn't like Pete wasn't also successful as a 1st baseman. Happened later in his career but world series championships matter. Then having a right hand bat like Stargell on the bench to pinch vs. RHP is useful.

Oh, I definitely have a LOT of options depending upon the matchups.

A "LOT" did you say? lol - don't get ahead of yourself there, bbEric . . . you're not the only one with an accomplished, switch-hitting 3rd baseman who has also played multiple full seasons in the outfield with a career .303 batting average. You're just the one with the fewest home runs and no hall of fame membership. ;)
