MLB Draft Round 16 Last Round

Well, going into this I was looking forward to drafting some true all-time legends that I’ve never had the opportunity to draft before in a fantasy league. Outside of Micro League baseball, at least. But, even though I know I’m gonna lose votes bc a lot voters won’t know my players, I just can’t stop myself from taking so many of these guys.

I need a starting SS & I can’t believe this guy is still available. I’ve intentionally passed on him the last 3-4 rounds as somewhat of an experiment to see exactly how far he would fall. But, apparently I’m his only saving grace from UDFAhood. There are a cpl of recent guys I really wanna take too & was kinda hoping this guy would be drafted to make the decision for me & save my conscience. Lol. But, he’s still there & no way I can pass on arguably the best SS of his era & certainly one of the best ever this late in the draft. He will also become my 3rd player manager, which wasn’t a tactical move, just dumb luck. But, I should at least have a smart team.

Some refer to him as the A-Rod of his time bc Boston bought his contract for $250K in 1934, at the height of the Great Depression. He never won an MVP but finished in the top 10 in voting 5 times (runner up in ‘33) & was a 7 time all-star & a HOFer. He had 8 seasons of at least 100 RBI & had 94, 95 & 95 in 3 other seasons. His slash is .301/.390/.468/.857 & he averaged 39 2B, 9 3B, 13 HR, 109 RBI & 94 runs scored/162 game season. I’ll take Joe Cronin.

@CB3UK center stage

Fantastic pick at this stage in the draft.

I think it’s my turn? I select Ralph Kiner.

Good pick man. I was hoping he’d slide another round or 2 so I could use him as my big RH bat off the bench. He averaged 41 HR per 162 games & led the NL in HRs his first 7 seasons. He only played 10 years but had a shot at 600 HR if he played another 5 years keeping up his pace at the time.

In consideration for best base stealer ever and a .340 avg, though it was 100 year ago
I actually had to do some digging but for most of his career the rules on stolen bases were different. A runner was credited with a stolen base if he advanced 2 bases on a single. So if he went from 1st to 3rd or 2nd to home on a single it was a stolen base. So he probably wasn’t as good as his numbers suggested. In the 4 years after they changed the rule he averaged about 30 per year, though he did legitimately steal 54 in 1898. Still a good pick.

Sorry for the delay. I'll take Alex Bregman. @quest4#9 you're still up, MLB players only.
incredible ball player. A better shortstop. Better than Correa even. If the 'stros swapped them Correa might become the best 3rd baseman in the majors. And he might even spend less time in the DL.

But Correa has a an ability as a relay thrower that is out of this world. Probably the main reason he stays at SS.

Well . . . not saying this would have made a difference, although I would have to guess that it did at least "some". But the 1898 year you mention was also the year the balk rule was first implemented. Meaning, pitchers could no longer "fake" a throw towards first (or elsewhere) for the intended purpose of holding a runner on. So, in 1898, the "pickoff move" was in its infancy, or maybe only a concept. Either way, conditions for the fabled Billy Hamilton's base stealing stats are a matter of some scrutiny.

Nope, I have the best base stealer ever and it isn't debatable.

Just said in consideration. If you read on baseball they didn’t used to steal as many bases as they do in the modern age. 110 in a season back then might be 160 now. Either way, he’s one of the best baserunners ever.

had my eye on some relief pitching, but i’m going to officially move smoltzy to the bullpen. this guy in his prime held an era well below 3.00 and was 2-0 with a 0.59 era in the ws where he was mvp of a championship team.

give me jose rijo.

@drcats2013
I loved Rijo, man. I was at his first game back in 2001 after being out for 5 years. That’s the loudest I ever heard that ballpark.

you look at those missed years, if you plug in his averages he’d been a no question hof-er. really it’s about win totals etc at that point. he still should be in the hall imo.

@UKNorse do we have a 5 pitcher max?

I guess you can do whatever you want with your utility slots. I didn't really anticipate anyone using it on more pitchers.

Supposed to of been 4 starters and 1 closer and just assume your starter finishes in the 8th inning .

I realize that isn't typical anymore but I think everyone is slowing down in this draft. Can't imagine us going 7 more rounds for relievers.

For my last pitcher, I have an absolute STEAL. He is one of the best postseason pitchers in the history of baseball, and quite possibly the best ever. He has won 3 World Series titles, and has a career World Series ERA of 0.27 in 36 innings pitched. It literally floored me to see it was that low. He’s the absolute perfect pitcher to have in this format, and I close my staff with Madison Bumgarner.

@jrpross you’re up, man.

I think Bumgarner was already taken.

Yup go for it. I think the reference was to a 4th starter going extra innings once their 1 start is up.

He would absolutely be a steal this late. However he was drafted in round 7. You’d literally have to steal him :D
