MLB Draft Round 16 Last Round

Woo-hoo! Last pick!

So I was torn between Dustin Pedroia and Maury Wills for my last pick. Pedroia because he is a gold glove winning second baseman that could let Molitor move to third, first or the outfield; basically opened everything up for substitutions at will. Wills because he was a killer on the bases and would have made a great pinch runner.

Turns out Pedroia was picked a couple rounds ago and Wild got picked in this round

But then I found a guy that fit both bills anyway! I’ll round out my lineup with Chuck Knoblauch.

So the full lineup you’ll all be losing to is....

C- Yadier Molina
1st- David Ortiz
2nd- Paul Molitor
3rd- Scott Rolen
SS- Ernie Banks
OF- Babe Ruth
OF- Kirby Puckett
OF- Juan Gonzalez

SP- Grover Cleveland Alexander
SP- Clayton Kershaw
SP- Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown
SP- Jim Bunning
RP- Dennis Eckersley

Utl- Steve Garvey
Utl- Bobby Bonds
Utl- Chuck Knoblauch

Honorable mentions from my initial list of guys that I don’t think got drafted: Lou Whitaker, Dizzy Dean, Robin Roberts, Jimmy Rollins, Nellie Fox, Bret Boone, and Nelson Cruz.

The biggest undraftee IMO was big Mo Vaughn. I also had Fred Lynn, Kevin Mitchell, and David Justice. Josh Hamilton would have also been a nice pick if not for the baggage.

Without trying to fit backups everywhere with multi-positional players, I think this team could compete. And, there’s still enough left to make at least one more good team. I didn’t double check but I don’t think any of these were drafted.

C Gabby Hartnett
1B Bill Terry, George Sisler
2B Bobby Doerr
3B Dick Allen
SS Lou Boudreau, Luis Aparicio
LF Joe “Ducky” Medwick, Billy Williams
CF Goose Goslin
RF Chuck Klein

SP Robin Roberts
SP Dizzy Dean
SP Hal Newhouser
SP Rube Waddell
RP Joe Nathan or Tug McGraw

Medwick & Klein both won MVP’s & triple crowns. Those are the two biggest undrafted surprises for me.

I almost went with Billy Williams, there are so many pitchers, guys like Dazzy Vance, you'd almost never run out of quality.

I can’t believe Billy Williams didn’t get drafted. Of course I’m as much to blame as anyone. I ALMOST took him four different times, as early as the 8th round, but found some reason to pass every time.

If everyone wants I can randomize the draft order. Then have everyone post their writeups either in this thead or seperate. Once I have them all I can start the round.

If we were to do it that way. I'd like for everyone to post a batting order for a right and lefty as well as your write up.

Do we post all that on here or message you?

I just noticed you mistakenly had Ernie Lombardi on my team. But, you have him listed correctly on @LukaszObrzut team as well.

Don't want to clutter the new thread, but have a good Yogi Berra story. It also involves Jimmy Piersall. For those not familiar with him, they made a movie about him called Fear Strikes Out. He had a nervous breakdown while an active player.

During a game one day, the two hitters prior to Piersall received "knock down" pitches before making outs. When Piersall came to the plate, he looked Yogi straight in the eye and said, "I swear to God if you knock me down, I'm going to hit you over the head with this bat as hard as I can and you know I'm the only man in baseball who can claim insanity and get away with it." Yogi answered, "Jimmy, we don't knock down .230 hitters."

BTW re Yogi, Casey Stengel was once asked the key to the long run of success he had as a Yankee manager. He said, "I never play a big game without my man behind the plate."

I will finish off w jt realmuto- supposedly the best current catcher in majors so must be decent lol

Dang, I'm still not getting notifications.

At any rate I'll take Dave Winfield.

Winfield is a member of baseball’s Hall of Fame, a World Series champion and winner of seven Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger awards, while being named to 12 All-Star teams. Winfield finished his MLB career with a. 283 batting average, 465 home runs, 1,833 RBIs and 3,110 hits. Quite a player to still be on the board.

@jcrow10 you're up
Great pick. I wanted to take him earlier. It actually slipped my mind, after picking my HOF outfield. Figured he was already gone in the later rounds anyway.

yeah i had those names written down. first base alone...will clark, mark grace, andres galarraga, jason giambi, john olerud, john kruk. the one that got me was no one drafted dave mcnally.

also julio franco, kent herbk, and although juiced to the core early 90’s lenny dykstra from my favorite team ever (‘93 phils) was a clutch leadoff who had stretches against the best pitchers who could not strike him out. he bugged the crap out of guys like greg maddux in the playoffs, standing literally on top of the plate.

So, when are we matching these teams up and starting the voting? The wife and I are interested to see how far our team will go. I have four days off, so hopefully we can start the matchups sooner, rather than later.

Using this link my best lineup would average 6.023 runs per game

1. Todd Helton - 1B
2. Larry Walker - RF
3. Carl Yastrzemski - LF
4. Mike Schmidt - 3B
5. Mookie Betts - C
6. Jeff Kent - 2B
7. Joe Torre - C
8. Luke Appling - SS
9. Insert Pitcher

Starting Rotation
Game 1 and 5 - Greg Maddux
Game 2 and 6 - Randy Johnson
Game 3 and 7 - Left Grove
Game 4 - Gerrit Cole

Relief pitchers - (Josh Hader and Gerrit Cole)

Hi everyone likely going to start an NFL Draft shortly... thoughts on the draft should it be 7 on 7? Offensive only? Or the whole shebang 22 rounds total?

Will likely host the draft in the football forum (Wildcat Lair) not going to accept sign ups at the moment just know I'll be posting sign ups there tomorrow afternoon. All-Time or current?

I will bump this thread mid day.

Only 50 days until NFL season starts so should be a nice tune up.

I personally like the fantasy football style, but I am up for however!

This draft took 20 days. I shudder to think how long a full 22-man football team would take. [laughing]

And as much as I love football, I couldn’t name 80 offensive linemen if you put a gun to my head. I agree with the good doctor on kind of a fantasy football style. If we did defense, I’d suggest maybe just drafting a few players that would anchor the defender rather than the whole 11.

If we do the full 22 man we're gonna have to shorten the time on the clock. I'll go with whatever you and the other guys choose but I'd prefer all time while at the same time avoiding one year wonders. Let's just be really clear on the rules.

And we’d have to be clear too if we draft a fantasy football style roster whether it’s actually playing to win games or fantasy football. Philip Rivers had significantly better career stats than Johnny Unitas but who would you want in the super bowl?

Idk I don't think you can do this without the defense as well. 22 rounds is a lot though :)
Well, we have a long time yet before football season. How about we limit the clock to 3 hours. If someone won't be available they could email or message their picks to one of us. Maybe 4 hours at the beginning. Up to you guys.
