My team is built for versatiity. Several of my 3's can play the 2.A couple of nice teams, but I went with catsfan3523 in a squeaker. Catsfan's best players are younger and will age better than 420's, which was the tipping point in this matchup from my perspective, and enough to outweigh the significant advantage on the wings for 420.
Backcourt: Irving + Beal + reserves (DSJ, Bev) >>> Harden + Walker + reserves (Brogdon... amg that's literally it? 3 guards? WTF?)
Wings: PG + Ingram + reserves (PPat + the Just's) >>> Jae + Ariza + reserves (Young.. is that it? Ugh)
- I might take Irving + Beal over Harden + Walker as early as next year (and I'm far from an Irving fan). Over 7 years it's easy, and with the bench issue isn't even close. Brogdon might be 25 already, he's the only backup, and he tops out as, what, the 25th best PG in the league? Walker has peaked, imho, and his prototype does not age well. Harden is amazing, and the best guard on either team. Bev is an awesome backup for this. DSJ might be a future star, and maybe Catsfan goes 3 guard lineups, because the wings...
Bigs: AD + Turner + Howard + reserves (Collins, Young) >> Deandre + LaMarcus + reserves (PPat, Chriss, WCS)
- No fan of Ingram, but he has a ton of potential. This year and maybe next might be close, but in 3-4 years Ariza and Jae will drop off, and PG will still be a good #2 or #3 type of guy. So much more youth on 420's side, even if Jackson and Winslow top out as 7th men, as expected. Catsfan is dangerously thin on the wing, and a bit old. Ariza and Crowder are great prototypes here - decent to good defenders, can hit open shots, good teammates - but how do they age?
Miscellaneous
- 420 is deeper, but to me Chriss and WCS are just okay-ish prospects. Chriss put up some nice empty stats last year, but he looks clueless (which is backed by advanced stats); Suns fans are out of their minds about him, and they're wrong. WCS is okay, but he's never a solid starter type of guy. I'm a Deandre defender, but he has limitations and his game is predicated on athleticism. LaMarcus is pretty good, but he's no superstar by any means and he might be falling off quickly. AD and Turner are ideal modern big men, and Turner might end up as good as prime LaMarcus. Collins is an okay prospect, but a lot of NBA types think he can be an upper half starter someday. Howard is easy to pair with either AD and Turner, and as a bench guy has several solid years left.
- Both of these teams lose to the 2017-2018 Warriors.
- I can't believe I'm picking the guy with "meh" wings who will be "bleh" wings in 7 years, but here we are.
- Catsfan uses AD plus Turner to pull Deandre and LaMarcus away from the hoop, allowing Irving and Beal to carve up 420 with the PnR against two bad defensive guards. PG gets his, but unless Ingram turns into a star the wing depth of 420 is not enough to outweigh having players that do not compliment each other as well. As the teams age, it goes from close but slight 420 advantage to strong Catsfan advantage. Game, blouses.
Josh Emberly would have really hated my team.
