I've been pissed about our teams last few years but this game I felt was a victory even with a loss. If we had one of our bigs to help with hunter we win. We were up 14 and went cold. This team is going to be very very good and guard play wins tournament games plain n simple. Wagner got no stroke at all hurts to watch. He gotta stay in the gym and host 500 3s a night plain n simple. We need an offensive type of coach to take the reigns off cal though. Too much driving to traffic. . He has a team that can compete and with someone like bielein.. for example as offensive coach this team can win it all. Just sayn.

Freshman Bell Curve of Endurance

It is my observation (i.e. IMO) that early in the season Freshmen make mistakes at the end of games out of fatigue. They have never been asked to play forty-minute games before, and in particular to play hard at both ends of the court. And when they tire, they revert to bad habits and reliance on athleticism that is no longer that far superior to the competition. That was fully on display last night.

As the season progresses, they get into "college shape" and their talent advantage comes to the forefront, so the team soars up the bell curve. So, UK's youngest teams sometimes dominate the SEC regular season, and even the conference tourney.

And then they hit a wall. It is not unlike the wall many rookie RBs hit in the NFL after 12-13 games because they have never played more than that, nor been hit so hard, so often by NFL level athletes. In basketball the same happens with freshman who have been banging with older, stronger upperclassmen for 30+ games. And so, they are worn down and start missing shots and getting pushed around on D in ways that weren't seen ten games back when the team was dominating. It is the reason (IMO) that teams full of 22-year-old men are so successful in the tournament. And that is how teams lose in the closing minutes to K State, Auburn and even St Peter's teams whose leaders are physically able to weather the long season better.

8-43 from the field

Reeves
Wagner
Edward

From the field. Some of the misses were horrendous. You take out reeves and our two too 10 picks were 1 for 18.

These guys were unprepared. Some guys came out like they knew what they were doing while others were deer in the headlights. If everyone contributes it’s simple. We win. It’s a silver lining even though I despise moral victory claims for uk basketball. I doubt Wagner and edwards ever play that bad again this season. Those guys show up we win. Reeves hits a decent percentage we win. Can’t have these three or any three volume shooters hitting 18%. Impossible to win like that.

GITT for Perspective

I’ve disliked the Champions Classic for several years now, because losing it every year with a wait-till-March approach has been fruitless. I’m not a fan of moral victories anymore, but UK held their own throughout without a complete lineup. We can question Cal’s subbing patterns, but there isn’t a lot of choice when you have 8 scholarship players available. The guys were running out of gas. Not much else he really couldve done without going with walkons. Everybody’s chapped this morning. I’m not looking to debate or defend anyone.

Here’s a nice article for your bathroom reading;

This is why we will be a 6th seed or lower

Just like taking shots, you don’t have to make ‘em all but you gotta make some. You don’t have to win them all but a 14 point lead in the second half means you should have won this one. It’s falling short losses like this that keep us on the outside looking in. No moral victories, please tell me it hasn’t come to that. The right combination of players in this game and we win. Leaving in two guys giving you absolutely nothing gets you what you got….no other coach in the game would have made the moves this clown 🤡 made last night. He’s either that stubborn or he’s bought and paid for by outside forces. I suggest a combination of both. No emphasis on winning, just showcasing. Well congratulations you showcased two guys that showed that neither one is remotely close to playing at the next level. Nice work.

End of first half proved huge

Great effort overall and a lot to look forward to for the season but this game was a W we let get away. 12 point lead with 20 plus seconds to go in the first half with the ball. Wagner takes a long unnecessary 3 with 10 seconds to go on the shot clock, we foul on the rebound and then turn it over after two free throws instead of getting the last shot and of course they hit a 3 at the buzzer. Could have easily taken a 12-14 point lead to half instead it was 7.. kind of knew that sequence would cost us in the end and it certainly did.
