Change I would’ve made.

The one change I would’ve made, or implemented more of, would’ve been using Adou in more screen action on the wings and at the top of three point line to force HD to defend in the pick and roll situations that we all know he struggles with.

Force him to switch onto Rob, Reed, DJ or Reeves or try to defend them with drop coverage or hedging. It may have resulted in a couple of more fouls on him and negated his size in the paint. As well as forcing him to have to defend a guard on the perimeter.

Wall and WWW

Was at the game last night and Wall was sitting down in front of us. Before the game started, I noticed him walk down to the other baseline and he passed WWW who had courtside seats as well. Wall walked right past him and Wes tried to get his attention and Wall looked at him and kept walking. The reaction Wes had after Wall kept walking was not a happy one. Just an observation and not sure if there is bad blood there or not.

Football ***** UK Football Practice Notebook - Nov. 15 *****

Hello HOB. Back over at the JCTFC for today’s practice wrap-up. It’s Wednesday, so that means defense will be talking to us. We’ll have DC Brad White and select coaches/players joining us at approx 5:30 ET to discuss this week’s matchup with South Carolina. Stay tuned for the latest news and notes…

BRAD WHITE Q&A:

* South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler is playing at an extremely high level right now. Completing over 70% of his passes. Probably looks the best that White has seen him last two years. His accuracy and decision-making have really improved this year. Making smart plays with the football. Mobility within the pocket and pocket presence has improved. Does a nice job of extending plays. And he's got a couple of big, physical receivers to target.

* On not getting enough pressure on the QB... They haven't played complementary football up front and on the back end. If you get pressure up front, it helps the coverage, and if you get better coverage, it helps the rush get there. Just not putting those two pieces together consistently. They need to play together and play equally well for the other to succeed. This is a game where guys on the DL and DBs have to win their 1-on-1s. The reason you come to this league is to face high competition, and they have to start winning their share of those matchups.

* Season has felt a bit like a roller coaster on the defensive side of the ball. Their goal is to stay level, but it's been up and down, not just game to game, but even within a game. One of those years where they just haven't found any consistency. Even against someone as good as Alabama, you do good things on 1st and 2nd down, and you give up a 3rd and long. Those are morale builders, for the players and the crowd alike.

* On the status of DB Andru Phillips... "We'll see. Coach (Stoops) will handle that." Says guys have to step up, regardless, and be ready to play. (Stoops was optimistic Phillips could play during his Monday radio show.)

* On what's happening collectively on 3rd downs... Trying to evaluate and critique that from game to game. Sometimes it's poor execution. Sometimes maybe he tries to get too much into a call, or maybe tries to help one guy in his matchup but it hurts the rest of the defense. Sometimes you just have to cut them loose and let them play confidently, let them play fast. He reiterates that this week is about winning your 1-on-1 battles.

* On the road environment at SC... Good to have a fair amount of guys who have experienced that. It can be intense there. They've played in some tough ones this year, so they're used to it. Played well in a tough environment at Mississippi State, so hopefully they can take some confidence from that. Gotta be ready for 4th downs. SC has gone for it a lot in the past.

* On Nasir Addison getting some snaps... High on his future but A LOT to learn. A lot of moving parts to the defense, and things move fast. But he's working hard in practice, staying late, had a burning desire to be better, to be great.

Football What Shane Beamer said to start this week

Here's a summary of what South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said to the media today shifting his focus to UK-USC...

** Fans created an awesome atmosphere for two straight noon games. Should be an insane atmosphere. First night game since September, Beamer notes.

** Big challenge against Kentucky. Know what you're up against with a Mark Stoops team. Physical, competitive, extremely well coached and this team is no different. Played some really good teams the last five weeks, arguably the four best teams in the league. That's their four losses against really good teams. UK is really, really talented.

** Offensively it starts with the run game. Big offensive line, accurate QB who can make all the throws, really talented WRs and TEs. Defensively they do a fantastic job, well coached, don't try to trick you. They're very good at what they do. You have to beat them from an offensive standpoint. Dangerous on special teams with talented returners and good cover teams.

** Dakereon Joyner is doubtful, Tre Jones is out. Need to get through the week healthy.

** USC's 3-man front is coming off a good week against Vandy. Beamer said each week is different. Kentucky plays a different style than Jacksonville State, which went a million MPH. Kentucky doesn't, they're going to get with multiple personnel groupings, shift motion, shorten game. Notes the small amount of plays UK runs. Every week USC will do what gives them the best chance to be successful.

** "Knock on wood, we've played pretty well defensively against Kentucky the past couple of years." The 3-man front really just came from not playing good defense this year. They did play pretty well against UGA but they needed to get more athletes on the field. They've always played some 3-down, odd looks, but this is different because they have different personnel grouping.

** RB DJ Braswell will need to play. Doesn't back down. Beamer says their practices are very competitive. The guys on defense get after him pretty good at times. But he doesn't back down from any of them. He competes. Doesn't say a whole lot, he's the same day in, day out. Consistent and steady.

** When it comes to redshirt decisions Beamer tries to be up front and honest about what the staff wants, needs, and what the player wants, needs. Have to do what's best in the short term but having a long-term vision. Every situation is different.

** Asked about coaching carousel, someone mentioned that Beamer was linked in reference to the Mississippi State job. Asked if it's a good trend for coaches to be dismissed early, he said no, not a good trend. Particularly during the season. Hates to see it for Jimbo and Arnett. You realize that's part of it. But Beamer knows he got hired two years ago, second week of December, and it's a week or 10 days before Signing Day, you've got the portal and everything else. Beamer said he knows the connection with MSU...wife is from Starkville, MSU grad, Beamer spent three years, their AD is one of his best friends in the world - they had Thanksgiving together - but no, he wants to be at South Carolina.

** Beamer said they've gotten better over the season the last two years. They got better from Jax St to Vandy, this week must get better from Vandy to UK. They've talked about how they've played their best football in November, need to again this year. Talked about why they did that: Practice, prep, taking care of your bodies.

** Noticed a lot of energy in practice. Has always been good on Tuesdays. The energy has been great at practice whether they won or lost. They come work every week. Maybe a little more efficiency today, very businesslike, competitive.

** USC fans are a big advantage no matter what time it is, but it's a little different there at night from a recruiting standpoint and also the energy for the players. He was excited to see a night game. The guys are excited about playing at night.

** Have to get guys to Saturday, be careful with guys who are banged up. But you have to practice and prepare. Xavier Leggette said you can't cheat the process of getting ready. They showed clips of Xavier saying that to the team this morning. You do the same number of reps in practice but it's distributed differently.

** The transfer tight ends (from WKU and Arkansas) have pushed one another. Joshua Simon is hard to bring down. Tre Knox has receiver skills.

** O'Mega Blake had up and down contributions recently but had a bigger week. Had a bigger role early in season, some of that is guys coming back, more rotated in at WR. But they've always had confidence in him, has to be more consistent.

** Asked about the recruitment of LB Bam Martin-Scott, Beamer said they just needed players. Thinks there was a connection with one of their staff members and a HS coach. Beamer watched the tape and saw an instinctive, athletic guy. Talked to his HS coach a couple of times. During COVID couldn't really bring a guy in, basing decisions on conversations, word of mouth. He's fun to be around and exciting to see him have success.

** On how important this game is: Beamer knows two years ago it was 16-10, a slugfest, and last year was 24-14, had a huge turnover on first play of game and a blocked punt. When you play Kentucky it will be a physical, four quarter war. "They have our utmost respect."

** On Ray Davis for UK, "He's very physical. Great contact balance, can run through arm tackles, can make you miss. The first time I saw him on tape this year was when they played Florida and I think that was the day we played Tennessee... And I remember watching a little of it in the hotel and thinking 'look at this guy from Kentucky...' Amazing how many plays in that game UF's defense had him stopped, in perfect position to make a play, and they can't get him on the ground. Runs through arm tackles, makes you miss. Has their full respect, a good weapon out of the backfield.

For those that are still defending Calipari….

….please answer the following three questions:
A) did you feel confident that we would run a good set play to tie the game down three late in the game?
B) when is the last time you found yourself saying: “wow, Cal really outsmarted the other coach there”
C) did you enjoy seeing a second in-bounds play twice last night before we went back to “lob it into Mitchell”?

I used to defend Cal. I really did. But like many of you, I was defending Cal the recruiter, and not Cal the terrible in-game coach.

Cal ... stop playing favorites, it is why a lot of us can't stand you.

Literally NO EXCUSE to have Edwards and Wagner on the floor for 30 minutes each in that game and only play Shepp and Dilly 16 minutes each. They were CLEARLY giving us way more than Wag / Edwards.

Stop. Just use your gd head for once.

Shepp starts cookin he takes him out

Dilly starts cookin he takes him out

Does anyone else think Cal secretly hates UK and is just trolling us?

Program Injuries

Besides the fact that Cal is notoriously vague about the nature of injuries, updates, etc., does it also seem like we have injuries that sideline our guys notably longer than originally predicted? Just some guys over the last handful of years I remember:

  • Aaron Bradshaw - Cal originally says he doesn’t think Bradshaw will miss any regular games. Now we’re in mid November; has he even practiced at 100% recently?
  • Ugo Onyenso - initially says Onyenso will be out “a couple months.” That was in July. Will he even play in 2023?
  • Terrence Clarke (RIP) - the injury situation was just an absolute debacle. Constant prolonging without any real explanation from an injury that he suffered in a game and played through. Need not say more.
  • CJ Fredrick - Cal, verbatim: “had a minor procedure today that needed to be done at some point before the season. He and his family decided to be proactive and have it done now rather than wait. We are all happy it went well and he will be back better than ever and ready to go for the season!” CJ wouldn’t play a single game that season.

I don’t know. Maybe being ultra, ultra conservative with guys just comes with the territory when you recruit blue chippers who have handlers pulling strings and applying pressure to make sure that their guys don’t get rushed back. But it just feels like the injuries our guys go through frequently end up taking longer and requiring more ramp up than originally suggested or expected.
