FB Recruiting Vandagriff's decision

Just connected with Brock's dad Greg and here's what the decision came down to:

"Really it's about the best fit for what he can do as an athletic QB," he said. "It's about the uncertainty of what (Carson) Beck is going to do and not willing to play roulette [and] worry about his decision. By pulling the trigger on Kentucky he is able to get in there with Coen and start grinding on the playbook in early January.

"He played behind a Stetson Bennett that may never happen again, a walk-on that played his 5th and 6th years at 23 and 24 years old, and gets drafted in the fourth round. Beck, who until the Alabama game, was believed to be getting a late 1st round draft grade.

"So, now it's about playing."

Clemson opt outs?

Anyone have any idea if Clemson is having any significant opt outs?

I think beating FSU or Clemson is always a tough challenge for Kentucky because they are the 2 ACC schools that have way more 4 and 5 stars than we do.

Ill take any advantage we can get. I hope their NFL guys have no interest in playing a school like Kentucky and sit the bowl game out

Football Where things stand: What we think, what we know

** Willie Rodriguez landed an offer from Tennessee. What I have been told is that he did have very real interest in Tennessee at one point. If this offer had come a lot earlier before his offer to Kentucky it could have been problematic but I am not currently expecting him to flip from Kentucky. UK just had an in-home visit with him. Good validation for a top-5 prospect from Kentucky to have Heupel wanting him late.

** I do not have final information on who the new WR coach would be but just gut instinct is that Dameyune Craig is someone who would indeed make a lot of sense. He needs a job, Stoops needs some recruiting chops added, they overlap at Florida State and he has recruited the highest-level player at Auburn. Would be a very good recruiting hire. Just my opinion.

** Starting to seem like it might be tough to get Donaven McCulley who has been slated to visit this weekend. The IU receiver has been picking up some big offers/interest. The reason I liked him so much was he could conceivably be a backup quarterback. Remember he was a Rivals100 dual-threat QB before switching to WR with some success. Have long felt, why not just get a great athlete to put behind center in case the starter goes down if Boley, Beau Allen (or whoever they add, etc) struggles or isn't ready?

** Things sound much better on A&M receiver Raymond Cottrell. If you have followed the tone of Cottrell's postings and "likes" on social media it doesn't seem like a stretch to say the Cats have a chance to get some WR help pretty quickly. Sure seems like he is all about UK at the moment. Cottrell is a former Georgia commit who has a big frame and looked pretty good in the Aggies' spring game. Lots of remaining eligibility so he's a talented guy who has a lot of years.

** Have heard about an in-home visit with Ja'Mori Maclin but do not know about an official. Do think Kentucky is a short list option there. If they could add Cottrell and Maclin that would be big-time.

** Hope we built up some goodwill with the Vandagriff recruitment. We reported what we could when we could and in terms that were carefully worded. Do always try to do right by you all here, not always easy with timelines and everything we're dealing with.

** My understanding is Kentucky is still in a really good position with 2025 WR Eugene Hilton, the son of Ty Hilton.

** We have heard that Rocket Sanders from Arkansas is a running back that Kentucky would have some interest in. However, he's going to be one of the most coveted running backs to go into the portal and that's probably a position where it might be a little harder to find someone who obviously matches Ray Davis' 20 touchdowns and all-purpose pro-style ability. So every big name running back who goes in will be important. Georgia is one place to watch for him. Another couple of possibilities in the backfield: George Pettaway from North Carolina could be an intriguing player, and have also heard that Chad White had built up a very good RB room at West Virginia, but Jahiem White was a freshman All-Big XII option. There's probably a RB or two on that depth chart that would be of interest.

** Elijah Groves' decommitment was not a total surprise but I was not 100% sure it was going to happen. There was definitely some chatter about it. Kentucky has a lot of linebackers and potential edge guys in this class and they will hit the portal (although again, Edge is a tough spot to get a top guy in the portal I'd imagine). What I'll say about it is that in this era, you are dealing with scarcity and have to make decisions about individual players with a bigger picture in mind. I thought Groves was a good-looking prospect with a high ceiling but not a sure fire guy. Interested in what kind of career he's going to have somewhere else. Definitely seems to make it less likely that the younger Groves brothers end up at Kentucky. He's a '25 with UK, Mizzou, NC State offers, so if UK had kept him you probably have a really good core RB piece for the future. I'm not crazy about losing a guy when it could cost you two or three really promising college players even if they are loaded there at linebacker. Was probably going to be tough to keep all those linebackers on board anyways.

** I like the prospect of adding Beau Allen as a depth backstop at quarterback. Probably don't devote a lot of NIL there and have said I think he would probably be preferable as a backup situation compared to some of the other QB2s they have come into seasons with.

** One thing I've long believed... If you feel like it's overwhelming to think about the sheer amount of portal work Kentucky has to do, remember that we are talking about Kentucky. You are basically trying to have the kind(s) of seasons you had in 2018, 2021, the kind of season Missouri just had in 2023. You are not going to be elite in every position room. The key is to check the important boxes: 1) Competent gamer at QB, 2) Solid OL play, 3) No glaring weak areas, 4) Couple of studs to build around.

Do they have the studs to build around? Deone is one. Trevin could be another, although again, waiting on a possible NFL decision (have to imagine he would be back). Offensively, that's what they're after. Barion or Dane development was always going to be big.

** There's a defensive back I have had in mind who has not gone into the portal yet. Someone who had a really solid season this year and would represent both a physical and production upgrade. Of course, until he goes into the portal there's always the chance that he doesn't.

** More on Vandagriff. I think pretty quickly it was decided that he has a lot of the tools that could help a quarterback thrive in Coen's offense. We talked about what might have been going wrong with Leary for a lot of the year. The batted passes probably resulted from something of a wind up approach that anticipated where he was going coupled with his height. But at NC State he was really more of a dink and dunk guy and then someone who would drop back five steps and let it rip downfield. That is not really Coen's offense. He was too intriguing a quarterback not to take and I definitely appreciate that, but in terms of moving under center, play action throws, QB run, etc., Vandagriff is stylistically a much more natural fit for what Coen probably wants to do. Somebody like Kyle McCord from Ohio State probably would have been intriguing as well but UK was probably already locked onto Vandagriff.

Two Things Can Be True At Once

Like the title says, two things can be true at once. The loss to UNCW was a bad one. But this is still a really good team.

Although the floor may be low (UNCW & probably one or two more head-scratchers this year), this team has a much higher ceiling than teams from the past few years. Much higher.

And clearly the doom and gloomers will say "yeah, but Cal is still the coach so.....".

Well guess what, he will be the coach this entire season. If you let that steal your joy and steal the joy of watching these incredibly talented young guys play ball then that is on you.

Be salty if you want, but there are so many positives and I want to live my life focusing on positives and things I can control:

-Reed Sheppard is a revelation and for those of you who were born and raised in Kentucky a truly generational talent for a homegrown kid and you should revel in it. We should all enjoy every last second of his time here. His dad was one of my favorites as a child and now my daughter is the same age I was when Jeff played at UK and she is a big fan of Reed. It's fun.

-DJ Wagner is a special talent. A quiet kid and by all accounts GREAT teammate. He also seems to enjoy the challenge of the defensive side of the ball. Right before his injury he was reaching his potential, he will be back and will be a joy to watch.

-Dillingham is just electric anytime he has the ball, good or bad you can't take your eyes off of him.

-Bradshaw. Completely lost and unsure in his first game but why wouldn't he be. He will be fine, and I was told would never step on the court at UK, so anything from him is icing on the cake, right?

-Antonio Reeves. This is my favorite player from the last two seasons, love this kid and his offensive gifts. Probably being taken for granted the historical things he is doing from 3pt range in his time here. Also is much improved on both ends of the court from last year.

-Adou is just grit and explosiveness. Will have a wow play or two every game and will do the tough things a team needs

-Justin Edwards. A lot of you have given up on this kid. I wish people would get behind people who are struggling rather than pile on, but such is life. His time is coming.

-Tre Mitchell. The glue that holds it all together. Kid understands and plays basketball at a high level and truly appreciates being at UK.

-Jordan Burks. Was a high-volume ball dominant scorer in his prep career and has accepted a different role here and plays wherever the team needs him. Love his commitment to the team

Can't wait for the next game that I get to watch with my girls.

Julian Fleming Ohio St. 5 star WR

It would only seem fitting we try to find a 5 star WR to pair up with our new 5 star QB. In this particular case, we're talking the top WR prospect from the entire 2020 class. And this isn't someone buried on the depth chart either. He is currently Ohio State's 1 at the Z-WR position. He entered the portal on December 4th and apparently he has more than a passing interest in UK. He's listed as a senior so I guess he would only have one year of eligibility left as a graduate transfer. But what an important piece he could potentially be.

He didn't seem to put up incredible numbers this season with 270 yards, but I think he has been battling an injury that probably limited him somewhat. He had 533 receiving yards in his previous season and 6 TDs with an average of 15.7 yards and a long of 79 yards. Those aren't shabby numbers considering he's playing the opposite side of the field of Marvin Harrison Jr. who is arguably the most productive wideout in the country.

What the hell is going on at Ohio State anyway? It seems they are experiencing a mass exodus of players to the portal, especially on offense. We might end up with several of their 4/5 stars if everything goes well.

Walker Himebauch Named to Coaches’ SEC All-Freshman Team

The Colorado native was UK’s snapper the last eight games

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Long snapper Walker Himebauch has been named to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team, it was announced Thursday by the league.

From Colorado Springs, Colorado, Himebauch played in 12 games as the short snapper before an injury to long snapper Ronald Gaines saw him do double duty for both kicks and punts in the final eight games of 2023. He contributed to a nearly perfect operation, as kicker Alex Raynor made 10-of-11 field goal attempts and 43-of-44 PATs. Raynor is currently on pace to set Kentucky’s single-season and career field-goal percentage marks.

Kentucky (7-5) is headed to 79th TaxSlayer Gator Bowl to take on No. 22-ranked Clemson (8-4) on Friday, Dec. 29 in Jacksonville, Florida. The Wildcats and Tigers will tangle at noon ET at Bill Gay Grounds at EverBank Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPN.

Tickets are available online at UKFootballTix.com or by calling (800) 928-2287, option 4. Kentucky will be on the west side of EverBank Stadium. Student ticket information is online at UKFootballTix.com. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets directly from UK Athletics to guarantee seats with other Kentucky fans and to help UK meet its bowl ticket obligations.

12 team playoff is a game changer for our program

What do we play for every year? An SEC championship and the playoffs. These two things are far away from our grasp and likely would never happen in our lifetimes because of programs like Georgia and Alabama. Secondary goals? Win as many games as possible and go to a meaningless bowl game. Kinda pathetic to be honest. If we win a Citrus Bowl over Notre Dame that’s playing with a depleted roster, does anybody care but a portion of our fans? Not in the least.

On the other hand, next year we’ll have a legitimate (albeit low) chance of doing something as a football program on a national scale that is meaningful. When you start talking about having 3-4 SEC teams in the playoff, that means there could be room for the Ole Miss and Missouri’s of the world. Doesn’t mean we’ll make one in the near or distant future, the SEC is only going to get better with TX and OK, but at least there’s a chance now.

Laugh if you want, but anything is better than the current state of college football, and it’s going to be great seeing some lesser programs in the playoffs playing meaningful games (even if the same teams win the whole thing in the end).
