Pace of play last night

I would love @David Sisk thoughts on this.

I thought it was painfully obvious that A&M’s plan was to bully us physically on both ends of the floor. It also became painfully obvious that we could not guard them in the half court.

I am not a “gotta press” guy, but when half of their team started cramping, we continually allowed them to walk the ball up the court. I was yelling, “make them run” the entire time. You give up some open looks by speeding up the game, but we ALWAYS allow opponents to dictate pace.

On a side note, when you have 2 guards routinely beat you off the dribble, it makes me think of the wonderful Rick Majerus and the triangle and two junk defense he threw at Arizona and Miles Simon/Mike Bibby in the 1998 tournament. They prob hadn’t really even practiced it, but he was determined to not lose to Bibby and Simon and make someone else beat them.. and it worked.

We could never do something on the fly like that because it doesn’t prepare kids for the NBA.

aTm lost 13 games this year yet…

Played like they should have been 30-2 going into that game. So tell me…As a coach, obviously you’re elated with the win, but shouldn’t you also be pissed as hell that your team couldn’t bring themselves to play with that intensity every game? Or at least a much higher percentage of games? They were a bubble team going into the tourney yet played like they could beat any team in the country. I guess that’s partly on Buzz Williams but damn, if I was him I’d be yelling “Where was that in all those losses!!” They played like a one seed but will probably be an 8 or 9.

What was once colloquially dubbed the "Kentucky Invitational" has taken a wrong turn into annual frustration for the proud Wildcats.

Seventh-seeded Texas A&M dominated second-seeded Kentucky 97-87 on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

The Wildcats, who went 23-4 in the event from 2010-19 and once won 13 straight tourney games, have now been ousted in their opening game three of the last four years. They currently own a three-game losing streak in the SEC Tournament for the first time since it began in 1933.

"We weren't ourselves tonight," Kentucky head coach John Calipari said. "... We had been playing so well, you just kind of expected it, and I think maybe we separated a bit tonight and guys were trying to do their own thing.

"Hopefully, it's a lesson that you can't play in this next tournament that way." (cont) ....

Name me a coach in any sport that has done less with more and is still employed at the same place

I’ve been thinking about this for some time. I cannot think of any coach that has lost his job doing what this clown has gotten away with. The knock on Tubby Smith was that he got lazy, complacent in recruiting. I’m sure sitting in attendance last night probably had him shaking his head at what he was watching unfold. Tubby believed in game preparation and being strong defensively. John could care less about either one. If there’s nothing that can be done, and we have to ride this out to 2028 or whenever then I’m going to note the period between 2009 and 2028 and the period of laziness and missed opportunities. We won a title in 1978, took us 18 years to win another one. We won in 2012 so I guess we are looking at second season that a new coach is here before we see another one. Just getting my bearings here so I don’t accidentally set my goals for Kentucky Basketball higher than they should be.
