How Are The Other Teams Doing It?

Reading a lot of back and forth on “Cal is the problem, The OAD system is the problem, freshman-heavy team is the problem, NIL/parity is the problem” etc.

But ultimately, how are we seeing a couple of blue/new bloods making it to final fours and/or winning championships the last few years with lesser talent, lower-ranked recruiting classes, etc? Instead of what is UK/Cal doing wrong, my question is what are the other teams doing right, in your opinion?

Football Staff as Recruiters

With the addition of Wolford I think Stoops has done a great job at revamping this staff from a recruiting perspective. Loosing Clink, Sumrall and Wolford in a short span really hurt the recruiting prowess but I think Stoops has done a great job restocking the last 2 years.

Marrow - elite recruiter (too many guys to list 🤣)
Wolford- elite recruiter (Walker at UK and tons of 4* & 5* guys at Bama, USC, Illinois, etc.)
Coen- may not recruit a ton of guys but is elite with the few he does & at getting QBs (Barion, Gilmore, Boley, Saunders, Porter, Levis, Vandagriff)
Collins- very underrated good recruiter (Godfrey, Anglin, Marshall, D. Smith, Q. Scott)
Bouleware- has shown to be an elite recruiter in the past. Still pretty new to the staff but has already made an impact (Wilcox, Patterson & Mizell)

To me thats a pretty damn good to group to do the majority of the heavy lifting for reacruiting classes. There is definitley a drop off to the next group of coaches but a few of them do a good job out on the field.

White- not a good recruiter but has landed a few good guys and is a good DC (Fearbry, Matthews, Addison, Durojaiye)
Mike Stoops- still probably too early to tell but mediocre recruiter so far at UK (has been elite in the past at Oklahoma) but been solid with the LBs (J. Brown)
Stewart- pretty bad recruiter but is doing a great job with the dline (A. Smith, A. Stewart, D. Ross, Q. Jones, helped land Wilcox, Gilbert & Walker)
Buffano- Im just not sure what he brings to the table at all. Hes a bad recruiter (only landed A. Stuart & C. Redd) and the safety play has been BAD

Shorts- cant judge him yet since hes so young and only been at UK for like a month but he feels like hes going to end up a very good recruiter. A young guy who played the position really well and helped put Tank Dell in the NFL are all positives.

Overall I feel like this is the best recruiting staff Stoops has had since the days of Sumrall & Clink all on staff.

Cals mindset change ?

Much has been made of Cals seeing the light and bringing in an offensive coordinator if you will to help play modern basketball. That’s been well documented and he’s been mostly praised for seeing the need for change. Now my question is can someone please show him his antiquated ways of playing defense. I get that he’s a strictly man to man guy. However the other night I watched about a half of the lakers game. They supposedly play man but if you noticed Anthony Davis is always within 6 feet of the rim as a defender. They play what I call an abbreviated zone or man whatever name you want to put on it. We can score on most any team. The problem is any team can score on us !

Don’t over think……

We lost and looked bad doing it…..we have 2 losses looking bad….we have 2 losses playing good the other teams just made more plays. I see this as we are ok! Really just 2 bad games. We will be ok! This team wants to win and will have another hiccup but it’s all the journey towards March! Also don’t put your happiness in a bunch of teenagers playing a game! Have a great weekend all!

Kavosiey Smoke

Kavosiey Smoke is on Twitter annoyed that he didn't get an invite to any senior bowls. "I don't understand how I'm not invited to a senior bowl or nun" with a face palm emoji.

2023 stats: 2 carries, -2 yards.

Someone stated the obvious and he commented back that his special teams success should be a factor. All 5 tackles.

Wish the best for Smoke, but it's kind of a shame that there's so little self-awareness.

Realistic NCAA seed

If the worst and likely happens and we drop games at Auburn, Tennessee, Miss State?, SEC Tourney, maybe one more at home (UT, Alabama) what is the prediction of NCAA placement. Best I can remember we have been better than a 4 twice since 2015 and we would have been in the Covid year. Thats not good enough IMO. With UK Cal should have better than a 4 80% of the time. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Kentucky will have at least 4 NBA All-Stars, and possibly as many as 7 this year.

SGA is already a starter for the West. It was nice to see the coaches and players have some common sense and keep Steph out of the starting lineup.

Out East, Maxey is a virtual lock. Randle and Bam are also likely in the frontcourt bench players.

Out West, joining SGA will likely be Booker, who just scored 62 points in a game this week.

Also in contention are Towns (who also scored 62 this week), Murray (who's averaging 24 and 8 in the month of January), Fox (who is looking for his second straight All-Star appearance), and Davis is looking like the HOF player we all knew he could. He dominated the in-season tournament and has been healthy.

I think Murray gets snubbed again (he's never been an All-Star) and Towns gets a nod over Davis because Minny is the best team in the West. Fox likely loses out because Steph will get a nod before he does.

Once the dust settles, Maxey will be UK's newest NBA All-Star and represent out 19th all-time All-Star, which will officially move Kentucky past UCLA for the most NBA All Stars of all time (UCLA and UK are currently tied at 18 individual all-star players right now).

Yes, all of this matters. It's huge for recruiting.

Cynical snapshot

So it looks like we got:
An Oline coach that helped bust down the BigBlueWall on go round 2

A head coach that thought he had another job

An OC that said he wanted to put down roots that had his name in the NFL hat in five or six towns

A DC that has been labeled genius that taught a crew how to give up 35-49 points a game and thought it was a good idea to protect a weakened secondary by not pressuring the passer

Wide receivers that can run when they want but not routes and drop 40%.

A 5 star QB that's not played

Running backs few have heard of

Predicted by analysts to maybe, MAYBE win 6 games....4 OOC, Vandy ... and somebody.

Okay....I guess it's time to start thinking about the 12 team playoff.
