Here’s the thing that is fuzzy to me. Putin knew this is how the West would react, with sanctions, it just seems there’s more at play here.
We’re all assuming the plan was to race to Kyiv and take it over. Ukraine is a much more formidable foe than Iraq, and it took the US over 30 days to get to Baghdad. They have control of the air, if they wanted the lights out, and internet down it would be, so why haven’t they?
All these financial restrictions aren’t going to do anything they’re just symbolic. They’ll hurt the Russian people but long term little effects on Russia and Putin as they turned to Crypto as of October. The US can’t stop Russia financially because of this.
