Russia isn't backing off of anything, and now you, me, and everyone else knows why China has been hording dry goods for years. Last check they had something like half of the worlds grain in their storage bins.
I feel like the west has been played, badly.
You know, and I'm really, really hoping I'm totally wrong, but this conflict between Russia and Ukraine could potentially negatively impact all our lives on numerous levels. We're talking not only massive fuel shortages, but also enormous changes for the global food supply. My god, I seriously hope like hell I'm wrong.

Because we made a deal with the moderate faction in Iran to keep them from pursuing nuclear weapons, verifed by inspections, in return for lifting sanctions. They were abiding by it. Trump broke it arbitrarily and unilaterally because y'all don't like Iran, empowering the rhetoric of the extremist factions. So now we're scrambling to make a new one when we shouldn't have to because it was already done.

The Persian people have a long and glorious history. They didn't poof into existence with the revolution in '79. They have some reason for those chants as we've been meddling with their internal affairs for a long time, causing plenty of pain and suffering. Inflicting more only validates the rhetoric of the extremists who offer the populace an easy scapegoat. America. Empowering the moderate secular factions is the only way to affect real change in Iran. The last thing the Middle East needs is more instability, hunger, and resentment.

There are indeed moderate political leaders in Iran, in fact I would agree that a significant portion of the Iranian populace is nowhere near as radically religious and anti-American as their leadership is.
From one of your replies on this topic: “Empowering the moderate secular factions is the only way to affect real change in Iran.” I agree with this 100%, but the problem is that all political candidates (and even parties) are ultimately subject to the approval of the clerics who are the real power in the country. A HUGE opportunity to change the trajectory of history was missed when the Iranian people rose up in protest again their leadership during the Obama administration, and he did nothing as the Iranian leadership cracked down hard on the people. To be fair, virtually all of the Western did nothing either.
Trump was completely in the right to void a terrible deal negotiated by an incompetent Obama administration. The JPCA did nothing but kick the can down for a few years. Now Biden is allowing himself to get rolled into an even worse deal, and he’s trying to pretend it’s merely a continuation of the previous deal. There’s no need for a new deal because we had contained Iran with re-instated sanctions.
