The main issue is that we consume more than we make or can make. There simply aren’t enough bodies here to meet the demands. Same on the service industry side. We can’t handle the demands that we create. There are millions of positions in the US right now that we can’t fill. There are millions more offshore.

Also, I think it’s funny that hardcore right wingers can openly wish death upon liberals (half the population) and pray for California and New York to be destroyed, and at the same time defend every American worker to the death. Warrior, I don’t doubt that you’re a hard working SOB and it sounds like you’ve extracted almost every bit of good you can with the tools you have. Not everyone is like you - not even close.

Listen, I understand that we can’t make everything we consume, that isn’t what I’m trying to imply.
Third world workers are cheap, they have lax environmental and safety laws. Those have always been there, companies were free to go. What changed was the one protection to American workers that prevented that, tariffs on imports. When you remove those why would a company stay?
That is the Govt selling out their citizens. It affects communities, schools, local govts and charities. I don’t blame the Corp, they’re trying to make a profit, I do blame the lawmakers that didn’t have the foresight or care about the long term.

I am a patriot who believes in this country and always have. Still get goose bumps at the national anthem. Some call me a racist because I am a nationalist, (my circle of friends would surprise them but, they are like thinking Americans) some call me crazy because I defend this country with every part of me but, make no mistake, "All enemies foreign and domestic" covers some of those people who say they are American but hate this country and want to change it so....while wishing some people dead may be a bit harsh, I am not opposed to sticking a boot up their ass or taking them out if they try to take away my constitutional rights. That is UN-American.

It was a conversation about lack of jobs in the rust belt and Appalachia. The talking points were that Trump would return both regions to how they were before automation became a thing and coal was a major energy source. I countered that there were myriad opportunities in multiple cities around the country, so anyone waiting around in a place with no jobs was choosing to be unemployed. That wasn’t well received at all here. Lots of “not everyone can just up and move, people shouldn’t be forced to move for work,” etc.

I’ll give Trump credit where it’s due about how the job market has improved, but it’s cyclical. At some point unemployment will start creeping back up again, and people will have to make a choice about being poor or bettering their situation.
Well sure. If there isn't opportunity in your area, then go where there is. I agree. However, that doesn't mean that politicians shouldn't put forth policy that's going to improve opportunities where it doesn't exist. So yes, it's up to the individual to make a life for themselves. Politicians are a necessary evil, so if we have to have them, I want them working to improve areas that need help.

Agree. I think they are 2 different discussions though.

1) lets keep jobs here
2) reality is that jobs have moved or been automated, so go where there are jobs

Why is it the government's job to keep those business there? I thought private industry was the answer to everything?
It's not the government's job to keep businesses, but it is their job to make sure that they don't place so many restrictions and tax burdens to where it's much cheaper for a business to go to another country. The US has to remain competitive and that's all we want the government to do.

I guess my point is, is that yes an individual can make a nice life for themselves if they choose to. It takes hard work, good decision making, and sacrifice. That sacrifice may involve moving. But what the assholes in DC decide to do can definitely decrease or increase opportunity. Both government and individuals need to do their part. Make sense?

Is it really a garlic festival? My money is on a disgruntled vampire.
Our agriculture festivals are huge here. We have the Gilroy Garlic festival, we have the Castroville artichoke festival as well. Good chance if you buy Garlic its from Gilroy, if you buy strawberries its from Watsonville, salads its from Salinas. The festivals bring in a ton of money for the towns around here. And if you haven't had Gilroy Garlic fries, you aren't living then.

You people are talking about my hometown now haha. But ya my bet is gangsters from Salinas and people just got caught up in the crossfire. Whenever there is a shooting like this around these parts, safest bet is gangsters from Salinas or Castroville.

Or
but the solution isn’t more free trade, especially with China.
So which is it? Free trade or tariffs? The American worker would love to know.

Middle school I was on the basketball team, saw a shorter unatheltic dude in JJ Redick dominating. So I thought, hey maybe I can try and be like that and I will be better (I was 11 at the time). So I started watching every Duke game to watch him. Haven't missed a game (except for the 2010 championship) since.

I’m betting on a millennial psycho. Don’t think gangsters go to honky festivals looking to kill everybody in sight.

Sorry that happened to your hometown. That’s nuts.

Cali better tighten up their gun laws *rolleyes*

No I dont think they went there looking to kill people. And these aren't honkey tonk kind of festivals either. This isn't like some country festival or something like that. Agriculture is just huge here and its kind of just second nature for everyone here to go to these festivals.

I really wouldnt be shocked if it was just two gangbangers who bumped into each other and one started to unload and some people got caught in the crossfire. That really isn't all that uncommon around here.

Its either that, or some methed up farmer who knew it was going to be crowded and this was his chance to kill some people.

Even if it wasn't a gangbanger and it was some methed up farmer. This crap is truly stupid. Growing up Salinas was always in the top 20 for Murder rates in the country. 5 kids in my class got shot and killed in my 4 years in high school. Salinas is 20 miles from Gilroy and I live in between the two. Where have these two been during all of that?

But no now a shooting happens during a big festival it is news worthy. This is just stupid posturing by these two.
