That was the 60s. Had he had another 20-30 or even 60 years of data and seen what socialist leftists have done to the big cities, CA, NY, and IL, and how much money was thrown at poverty to end it and failed, he would most definitely be a conservative. (And hated by the RINOS and the racist and race-baiting Dems, as he was in the late 60s)
He, like many people, thought that it was capitalism that failed and socialism that would solve problems because of a lack of data. Had he known how many impoverished people in socialist countries just starved or were slaughtered, he wouldn't have been fooled by the ideology. He actually cared about people, unlike today's socialists.
Anyone with any integrity (some without it) has already realized it is people that fail, and not the free market system. If people don't want to choose but be forced into their decisions by gov, that is populated by people with criminal intentions, then their laziness will be their undoing under ANY ideology.
