CBS: Jaxson Robinson among those who made best decision to return to college

After a breakout senior season at BYU under coach Mark Pope operating as one of the best shooters in the sport, Robinson made the right call by entering the draft and getting feedback -- then again made the right call by withdrawing from the draft on deadline day and committing to Kentucky. His stock wasn't as hot as it could be this time next year after a just-OK showing at the NBA Draft Combine, and another year with Pope playing under the spotlight in Lexington, Kentucky, for the Wildcats should do nothing but help his case next year. If the basketball world isn't aware of Robinson just yet, they'll soon know his name as one of the most underrated hoopers in the college game next season. -- Kyle Boone

NOTES FROM UK CWS WIN OVER NC STATE

1. What a win. Best win in school history, and could not have been more dramatic.
2. Kudos to BBN. They were loud and looked to be there in large numbers.
3. Pooser is a rock. He didn't have his best stuff today, but he made one bad mistake and paid for it. Regardless, giving up 3 runs in 7 innings is generally a winning recipe at this level.
4. Pitre a vacuum cleaner at second. Nicholson continually makes the right decision on when to go to 2B for the potential double play. The only defensive miscue was the wild pitch.
5. Mitchell daly should never buy another meal in the state of KY. Legend.
6. Ryan Nicholson is a beast. He has 22 HR. I think the school record is 24.
7. This is now officially the best team in school history. Win number 46 is the most ever. Add that to the first ever home super regional, first ever CWS berth, and second ever SEC title and this is indisputably the best team we've ever had.
8. It's nice to have some guys who can put it over the fence. We've struggled to execute "Kentucky baseball" over the last few weeks (i.e. move runners, score them from third with sac flies and bunts, get bunts down successfully, etc)...we have left a lot of guys at 3rd base; however, getting three homers will cure a lot of ills.
9. En fuego: Nicholson, Mccarthy, Daly, Lopez, Pitre.
10. Ice (and I mean ice) cold: Burkes, McCoy, Smith, Waldy. I can't believe I have to lump Waldy in with that group, but this is officially a slump. 1 hit since the Illinois game. Waldy seems like he should be able to snap out of it, but the other three are absolute disasters at the plate. I have pretty much lost hope that any of them can get a hit when they step into the box. Not sure if it's all mental or if they're mechanically off...
11. Hats off to the team for hanging in there. Aside from the homers, it was struggle today. Kept their composure and survived the rough patches. Well done.

Looking forward.

-I want to play A&M. They're better than Florida but I hate Florida and I'm tired of them and I want them eliminated by NC state.
-Mason Moore will likely get the start. if he can regain his control and avoid all of the walks, then we will be in good position to go 2-0.
-Bullpen-wise, I don't think any of the guys would be out for Monday. None went super long, though we did use quite a few arms. I'd guess that Hagenow, O'Brien would be first up.
-I have no doubt that Burkes and Smith will remain in the lineup for defensive purposes, but I wonder if Herrera gets a shot in Right field. We just can't continue to have four automatic outs in the lineup.

What a day, enjoy it. Let's get another dub on Monday night.

Its tough wrapping my brain around the new normal.

I enjoy reading the "how far will this team go" threads. Getting the expert opinions based on the current roster while adding in a few more. Its fun to dream. But I am not sure anymore what to base the dream on.

One comment struck me..."without any superstars currently..." what exactly is a superstar now? What does that even mean? Under the prior regime, FEBUK, that was easy. We just pull out the recruiting rankings an of course several of our guys would be there. From that list of 17yo's we would say 40-0 or E8 or whatever. Now I see that comment.... "without any superstars currently..." I have to scratch my head.

Is that superstar a 17yo kid who will be gone after a year? Or is that Reed or Rob....who are gone? How many superstars are not headed to the NBA draft. Who has a superstar and why is he staying in college?

That is not the new normal. The new normal is the "superstar" potentially in the portal. Who has the most 24yo dudes who are portaling UP to a better gig. They just dont have the name recognition because they are guys without a big name but have a big game.

So I have no idea how to answer a question, how far will we go next year because this is unchartered water. It relies on an actual Ball Coach. Someone who can BUILD a long term roster, older, that plays for the name on the front. Everything Cal FAILED to do. Coach P will get a much better level player from this new normal. I trust him. I am willing to give him 2 years with a promise not to bitch too much. As for 24-25 season....40-0.

So does Beau Allen get an extra year?

Part of the settlement between the NCAA and schools suing over immediate eligibility (not having to sit out a year) is this:

"Under the agreement, the NCAA would be required to grant an additional year of eligibility to Division I athletes previously deemed ineligible under the transfer eligibility rule since the 2019-20 academic year."

As I understand it, Allen was forced to sit out last year and would qualify.

Super Regional opponent

The Oregon State/UC Irvine game was suspended due to rain in the 4th on Sunday and will be resumed Monday with a score of 6-4 OSU. If OSU wins, they are coming to Lexington. If UCI wins (by the way they have a cool team name, the Anteaters), they will play a second game Monday to determine the regional champion and our opponent next weekend. If you want to watch, the suspended game will be resumed on ESPN+ at 12:05 Pacific (3:05 Eastern).
