Oh well, I figured I'd start this season's "Let's Go Cards" thread.

Keeping it simple. Last night, the Cardinals looked like the defending NL Central champions, and the Cubs looked like...well, the Cubs. Wainwright didn't have his best stuff, but he locked in when he had to. For the first time in a long time, I wasn't sweating the ninth. Rosenthal struck out the side. Hope he keeps that up!

Wainright looked very good, Lester was paid a fortune by the Cubs, so he needs to be better than he was last night. Haywood made a great debut for the Redbirds. Looked pretty good overall, looking for another great season.

Cardinals played a pretty good game, but really could have used a few more timely hits and that would have really blown the game open. It was just opening night so those hits may come, but you have to take advantage when those runners are in scoring position.

Back to .500 Wacha looked great today hopefully he will continue strong this year.

2-0 vs Johnny High Spikes this season.

Gotta love it!

Let's go Cards!! :)

4-1 against the Reds this year. Cards still have their number. I am worried in the long view of the season about the offense. 7 doubles in ten games, Carpenter looks like the hitter that had 55 doubles the season before last but after Carpenter Cards have issues. Great pitching will get them to the post season if the starting pitchers stay healthy. But you also face great pitching in the post season and this is a lineup that would get pummeled by great pitching.

Last years team had the lowest per game scoring average of any division winner since 1973. Cards have some pieces in the lineup to like but I think they are missing the big piece in the middle of the lineup. I know they were hoping Tavares (RIP) would grow into the middle of the order hitter we need, but now we appear to need to look outside the organization. I think mid season the Cardinals should make a move for a big bat, don't anticipate they will though cause the pitching is so good the record will be good, possibly in first place.

But I guarantee you this, we aren't going to win a championship batting Adams at cleanup and Jay sixth. I single them out only cause Holliday contract means he isn't going any where, not the hitter he once was, average or below average in every other criteria: fielding, throwing, base running. Right field they are obviously going to give Heyward a full season to show if he can hit. He has good speed, great arm and very good defensively, so we don't need a right fielder. Carpenter, in my opinion the best hitter on the team, leaves us in great position at third. Yadi is Yadi so we are set at catcher. Peralta at short provides some power this team needs, actually like his defense, not great range but if he gets his glove on it he makes the play. Look for his average to improve from last year. In a really good lineup don't think he would bat has high as fifth but he isn't he problem. And we have signed a big deal with him so that isn't where the influx of offens should come. Wong showed some pop at the end of last year in his bat and has great speed. Defense has been an adventure with him so far this year, but 2nd base is not usually a big offensive producer so wouldn't mind seeing what he could do for this full season.

That leaves two positions to go get more offense. First base and center field. John Jay doesn't cover a great deal of ground for a center fielder so his defense prowess isn't vital to the team. He is a solid player. Nice career average but gives you no power or rbi potential. Like him on the team as a fourth outfielder, but 150 games as the starting CF...I would rather have an upgrade. If we aren't going to make a move, I wish they would either send Grichuk to minors to give him more seasoning or give him half of Jays at bats. Grichuk has a lively bat and hits harder than almost anyone on team. Strikeouts could be an issue but without the necessary ABs its tough to judge him. If not CF that only leaves first base, Matt Adams may surprise me, but after his awful second half last year coupled with the obvious hole in his swing makes it an obvious choice for an upgrade. He had 15 homers last year and 68 RBIs. That is awful for a cleanup hitter. Not sure why they signed Mark Reynolds if they aren't going to give him more at bats but he isn't the answer. Cleanup is the place in the lineup with most need for improvement.

Must say, reading Reds Zone has been a treat these last two games.
Cracks me up when they start thumping their chests during opening week.

It's nice being a Cards fan, and having Reds fans say "The Cardinals are our Daddy" on their home boards. Reds made us work tonite, but the sweep is complete.

8th inning shows how much respect teams have lost for Jay Bruce. He comes up with 2 on, 2 out, and a RH starter still in the game, but a flame throwing LH reliever warmed up and ready to go. Cardinals manager doesn't even bother to bring in a new pitcher, just pitches carefully to JB, but still obviously not scared of him at all, was not an intentional walk by any means. Naturally, Cozart can't get it done and the rest is history.

Reds need a major influx of offense. Last night's lineup of Negron, Barnhart, Skip freakin' Schumacher and Bruce (who looks just as lost this year as in 2014) is borderline AAA material.

Remember, not so recently, when Reds fans were crowing about owing the division in the years to come...

Remember, not so recently, when Brewers fans were crowing about.......well, you get the idea.

I think Matheny would have went to the pen if anyone other than Wainwright was on the mound. But you're right about the Reds' offense. I wouldn't throw anything NEAR the plate to Votto until the other guys show me they can beat me.

Combine the 2 teams and you still wouldn't have a great offense, ha.

Being reported that Wainwright tore his Achilles last night. Fortunately the Cards have plenty of pitching. I sort of wished they would trade an arm for a bat or two. Not sure now.

Was chewing the fat with one of our surgeons today. He went on for almost an half hour about whether it could be a partial or full tear. According to him, even if it's a full tear it depends on where the tear is to determine if it's a season-ender or not. Guess we'll find out for sure sometime today (Monday)!

Who do the Cardinals turn to in order to replace Wainwright? Does someone just step up out of the pen to take the 5th spot, who would that be? I know that the Cardinals called up a catcher, but I thought that might just be something they do until Molina recovers fully.

Sorry, my best friend is a huge Cardinals fan, and because of him I'm a bit of a casual fan of theirs. So, was just curious what some bigger fans thought about this.

Cards playing well. Has anyone heard a possible Cole Hammels deal may be in the works? If we can get all arms healthy, I still think we have enough pitching to get a bat or two.

Last I heard Phillies want Carlos Martinez for him. No way I would make that trade.

I know Yadi needed the night off but a young pitcher like Carlos needs that leadership out there with him.

if you meant the cardinals best start since 1990, then i assure it wasn't. the cards finished in last place at 70-92 that year. not a good ye ar.
That is correct on 1990. Not sure why the radio said that.

Another come from behind win last night. 6.5 game lead with a 20-6 record.

Playing great baseball right now, makes you wish the season wasn't quite as long.

I work with a Cubs fan. We were sneaking around, watching the game on his phone. Afterwards, he looked at me and just said sadly:

"Tee, at this point I'd be satisfied with a pennant, much less a WS. But we'd have to beat you guys to do that. My dad died without seeing the Cubs win a WS, I'm probably going to die too. Maybe my grandson might see the Cubs win a WS."

I didn't have the heart to rib him like I usually do after we beat the Cubs. Just wouldn't seem right after that comment.

Siegrist got blown up today, but Peralta hits a walk-off. Baseball is a funny game. And the Cubbies are beginning to return to normal. Reds are done by Memorial Day. Life is good.

Talk about being a funk we are playing about as bad as you can right now. I think the injuries are catching up to us. Hopefully we can finish the first half on a good note in Pittsburg and heal up some over the break.
