Reed Sheppard committing Saturday

Name at least one reason you thought he would go to Virginia. Other than he’s white. And the other part — prior to Cal. Again … the white thing. Care to explain?
Has nothing to do with him being white, black, brown, purple or green. In the times I have seen him play he didn’t jump out to being super athletic. Cal loves super athletic. He is not projected to be a OAD and all that goes with that.
He is a multi-year fundamentally sound player that is a glue guy that helps win championships. He may be a 5-star but his style is not one that Cal generally seeks.

Everything you say here is true but, hopefully Cal has modified his thinking on building teams . I mean , he brought in Grady and Fredricks . Neither of them are super athletic.

I’m having dinner with Jeff tomorrow night. I doubt he’ll let the cat (no pun intended) out of the bag but Ima gonna be looking for clues, lol . I guarantee someone will ask him .
Well , Jeff said he’s got it narrowed down to FIVE ! LOL. He was really tight lipped about it last night. I was going to try and “finesse“ around the subject and see if he would drop any clues , but as soon as we meet up with him my buddy blurts out “ WELL, WHERES HE GOING?” lol. He did mention he’s working on another nil deal this time with Kroger.

I doubt anyone born before 1990 would ever boo Jeff Sheppard’s son at his high school game. Maybe some idiot kids who don’t remember his dad.
I don’t know man. People in this state get ridiculously angry over stuff.

I mean look at Wisconsin and Herro. Arkansas and Monk. And parts of our fan base are not any better by far.

I am a Coach Rupp era UK grad. Been following since Cotton Nash. I have thought Reed would go to Virginia for many reasons. Prior to Cal becoming the coach, I would never had thought a kid with his credentials (not even considering his parents) would be anything but a lock for UK. It would not surprise me if he goes to Virginia. If he decides on UK, I will be happy and hope that if he is as good as all the analyst say that he will be given the opportunity to thrive and become one of the best to ever play at UK. I want what is best for the young man.
Are you Steve Clevenger that played for coach Rupp?

Why? People boo Cal and he's done a lot more for the University. This fan base isn't noble, classy, educated or knowledgeable. Its more like a bunch of little league dads screaming about how much more they know than everyone else.

Fun rant, I haven't actually heard anybody booing Cal.

Still don't think anyone would boo Jeff Sheppard's son. Some of us have respect for the history of the program.

The worst will. Herro said he got death threats from Wisconsin fans.

It doesn’t forgive Wisconsin fans for that (absolutely ludicrous) but it’s two entirely different situations. Herro committed to Wisconsin then decommitted and flipped to Kentucky.

And to my knowledge, Tyler Herro’s dad isn’t a Wisconsin basketball legend and a Final Four MOP.

I mean look at Wisconsin and Herro.
But that was a distinctly different situation. UW fans were pissed at Herro because he originally committed to Wisconsin and spent a year talking about how excited he was to be a badger …but then abruptly switched to UK during his senior year.

There will be no sense that Reed misled us like that if he chooses someone else.

LOL Whatever. Bad UK fans have trashed Cal's family unmercifully after a few losses.

I don’t know what else to tell you man. I feel like whatever other shit you want to put on UK fans with Cal, there’s a 100% approval rating for Jeff Sheppard. And I think that will trickle down to Reed. I don’t see our fans disrespecting the Sheppard family by booing Reed. Hopefully he just comes to UK and I don’t have to prove it.

So he’s got a Lexington orthodontist and Kroger who happens to name our football field. I’d say that is a clue.

Again, if kid wants to even have a chance at going pro, UVA is not the way to go.
Like seriously, what is one good thing about going there? Playing boring ass basketball? Sure, it’s academically strong. Maybe one of the best in the country when it comes to that. But Reed also wants to play basketball.

I try to respect Bennett’s ability, but good grief, his style of play is so old old school. People gripe about Cal being stuck in the 80s? Yeeesh. Watching UVA is just not fun most of the time.

I mean 26 points in the 1st half the other night. And that’s pretty average for his squads.

There’s just so much more UK can offer Reed.

Call me old school, but I’ve always liked watching Bennett’s teams (I know that makes me the exception around here) and think he’s an outstanding coach.

The reason their games tend to be low scoring are twofold. First, they play outstanding transition defense …nearly every year better than anyone else in the country …teams don’t get quick and easy fast break buckets against Virginia, instead they have to work hard to find their shots. Second, Virginia doesn’t take bad shots. They work the ball to find the right shot. It’s not like they’re bad offensively, as they usually rank quite high in offensive efficiency. It’s just that they take more time to make sure they find the right shot than other teams.

To me, that’s just smart basketball. But, because it results in lower scoring games, a lot of UK fan seem to think it’s bad basketball. I can see why Reed would be interested in UVA, especially when you see the impressive success players who look and play a lot like him (see Kyle Guy, Joe Harris, Ty Jerome, etc.) have had there.

Why DO YOU say he's a glue guy

Cal makes what 10 mil a year? His job is supposed to be to win games at UK. He wins he gets cheered , he loses (especially like last year) he’s going to get booed. Why is this so hard to figure out? It happens everywhere in every sport.
I can see Reed getting booed by the younger fanbase that don’t even know who Jeff is. The same ones who think KY basketball started with Cal.

I don't know what to tell you brother. UVA offered on July 21st. Kentucky offered on July 9th. Kentucky offered before Virginia and that's not debatable.

Reed should have been offered as a freshman. No way a legacy recruit like Shep shouldn’t have been given the red carpet out the gate.

I would have been all over it. I don’t care when someone else offered. We should have offered at birth as far as I’m concerned.

You must be a big Billy Gillespie fan. He offered 8th graders. He had offered several 8th graders and not one ended up being good enough to play division one basketball. Got it.

Yes he should have...Cal always likes to say he is borrowing Coach Rupp's chair...it's too bad he did not borrow his philosophies on recruiting. He would have already had a handshake with Reed when he was in 9th grade because he valued the fact of the father or some connection to Kentucky basketball. I heard Coach Hall say one time that they had Mike Casey committed when he was still in diapers because of Harry's connection to his Dad...and it Reed's case his father played at UK...Cal says he gets it when it comes to our program. He doesn't get everything.

If I'm not mistaken, they changed that rule:

NCAA Division 1 and Division 2— Student-athletes can receive personal contact and recruiting materials starting June 15 after their sophomore year. Coaches can call athletes, send text messages, direct messages and emails, as well as make verbal offers.

Nob

Nobody and I mean NOBODY was more arrogant than pitino. The job must just attract arrogant Italians
true, but he came in at one of UK's lowest points and won with an exciting style
I think that had fans enamored with him. The thing that fans hated was the constant
flirtation with the NBA every summer

times were different, Coach Rupp valued basketball players. He wanted guys that understood the game
Cal wants athletes, which mean most of the time they have zero fundamentals
