Reed Sheppard committing Saturday

As has been suggested, if Reed was from any other state it's not likely Cal would have offered. And it just seems possible that if the family is thinking short-term, long-term and best fit, which you know they are, the sensible choice would be somewhere else like UVA.

Wait a second.

Cal doesn't offer 5 star recruits?

And if you're a 5 star recruit the best fit is UVA?

What?

We have some insufferable "fans"
I've just checked in on this thread from time to time as it has grown way out of proportion. Seems like we either have some very young fans on this board or adults who are just real immature. Can't believe all the back and forth of such things as "it will suck for you if he doesn't play followed by it will suck for you when he does". Just silly nonsense instead of a basketball discussion about an in state recruit for a beloved UK family. Makes you just shake your head as some of the immature comments on here.

What makes you think Cal didn't want to offer?
wasn't he one of the last "big" names schools to offer him
think he was
that and the fact that the kid parents both played @ UK
and he is an in-state youngster, most coaches would have been the 1st to offer
not the last for a good young player in their state

Calipari offered him a scholarship the summer before his Junior year. "Notably early, by Calipari's usual practices." If you want to argue "Cal should have offered this kid when he was in middle school regardless of how he usually operates," that's one thing. But to argue that Cal didn't want to give him an offer and had to be coaxed into it, you're simply making things up. There is exactly zero basis for such a ridiculous statement.

Reed Sheppard is the best Kentucky Recruit since Darius Miller. Dontaie played on a horrible high school team where he got everything. Both are very good players, but Reed is two notches above Dontaie as a recruit. Also don’t forget his high school coach was Brad’s coach at LCA. Think that man would want to upset Cal? Also his high school coach, is probably the best in the state when it comes to X’s and O’s.

yes it is early by Cal's usual operating methods.......he is always late to the party it seems
you can deny that if you like but it has cost him more than 1 recruit where he offers after
the recruit has been offered by numerous others
He may have offered Reed earlier by Cal's standards, but he was still one of the last to offer the kid
How are you the last or one of the last to offer a up and coming kid in your own state?

He was one of the last to offer Justin Powell & he went to Auburn
Yes he could have helped that train wreck of a season last year just like he helped Auburn and is now helping Tennessee

Allegedly I don’t know if it’s true just passing along info. Rock surface might involved. Apparently Hunter Biden has something to do with where they were coming from.

I mean if he doesn't come to UK it would hands down be the most shocking recruiting loss in the history of our program, no hyperbole.

1. Both his parents starred at UK
2. He is a lifelong UK fan

If that isn't enough...

3. He already has some video thing he is doing on Twitter that is sponsored by White/Greer/Maggard. They are a major sponsor of UK athletics.

Maggard is still around??

Complaining that Cal has lost recruits might be the most ignorant argument you can possibly make. The guy has probably gotten more 5 star players then anyone. I think he may know how to recruit.

do you pay attention.......he lost 2 needed recruits this year in Lively & Bona
wow to say he hasn't lost recruits is laughable
you may need something other than blue koolaid

I thought I read a post by you recently that was complaining about Calipari creating a one and done culture at UK? If not, I apologize and must have you confused with another poster.

Everyone loses recruits my lord what an ignorant statement. Out of touch.

If he does choose UVA over UK I could see a few reasons why:

1. His parents played here - this cuts both ways. It could be he prefers to follow his own path and create his own legacy.

2. He's not a 1AD player - going to a more traditional program where players aren't recruited over and stay longer may be a better fit for him and more appealing. Everyone has seen how Cal favors his 1AD players over the others. Multi-year players have to take that into consideration before deciding whether or not to come here.

3. UVA is a damn good school and difficult to get into. It's not ivy league but it's close.
My son is at UVa and you’re right, very good school and difficult to get into.

Again, nothing you are saying is backing up your argument that Cal "didnt want to offer him." You made that up, you can't defend it, and you're trying to deflect from that with unrelated criticisms of Cal's recruiting strategies.

The only “big name” schools that offered before UK was Iowa, Texas A&M, Arizona State and UL, then UK offered and IU, UVA, Ohio State and Clemson offered after. Cal offered within 24 hours of seeing him play in person for the first time.

What are you complaining about again?

I don't think Justin Powell was ever offered.

Cal is not judged on how many blue chips he lands, he’s judged in recruiting by how many top 5 prospects he lands. He has to have them. Cal signing the number 17 in class legit means nothing as we’ve seen now for years. He’s always got playing time and rushes them out the door. It’s not hard for a college coach at this level to land those with that kind of playing time.

Don’t know why so many have trouble with this concept.

This was a great post and needed to be posted twice for those in the back.

This...as good as his dad was and mvp of FF, would he see the floor playing for Cal?

If he's good enough, why wouldn't he play? Also, what does it matter how good his dad was? Just because someone's dad was a good player that means his kid should get automatic playing time?

wrong, VA has been on him for the beginning

he was out of high school, but was apparently asked to wait to commit anywhere until Cal saw how things were shaking out
don't believe he was when he left Auburn

I am a Coach Rupp era UK grad. Been following since Cotton Nash. I have thought Reed would go to Virginia for many reasons. Prior to Cal becoming the coach, I would never had thought a kid with his credentials (not even considering his parents) would be anything but a lock for UK. It would not surprise me if he goes to Virginia. If he decides on UK, I will be happy and hope that if he is as good as all the analyst say that he will be given the opportunity to thrive and become one of the best to ever play at UK. I want what is best for the young man.

I expect him to pick UK, but if he doesn't, I'm sure UK will welcome him to Lexington later thru the transfer portal, much like we did with Wandale. (wink)

Name at least one reason you thought he would go to Virginia. Other than he’s white. And the other part — prior to Cal. Again … the white thing. Care to explain?
