Shouldn't be is right but we made it so even to the point of having it institutionalized for the better part of 400 years. Whether you realize it or not acceptance into schools, hiring, promotions, etc are often as much about who you know as what you know. If the people who know you have been institutionally prevented from ever reaching those positions of power then you and the people like you will be at a disadvantage. Likewise wealth and power earned centuries ago can continue to give the heirs of that wealth advantages for decades and centuries to come.
