The Fermi Paradox poses the question: since the universe is massive and the probability of life existing on other planets is high then why don't we see other civilizations?

There are various theoretical reasons, one big one being The Great Filter, which suggests that perhaps many civilizations have been unable to overcome their own demise caused by natural disaster, war, or inability to sustain their environments for life, among other reasons.

In the last 200 years humans have undergone an explosion in growth and change that by all evidence is unprecedented in the 4.5 billion year old history of earth. Our growth and mismanagement of the environment is unsustatainable. It's not just global warming. It's overpopulation, growing contamination of oceans and the mathematical certainty that our status quo will hit a breaking point.

My point in all of this is: what is going on in our government is serious. Our democracy is at risk for bigger reasons than Donald Trump. If we can't get it together, more drastic measures will be forced to put in place to sustain life with out respect to historical American democratic traditions.

Our failing democracy is emboldening the autocrats of the world and totalitarian ideologies because the American people are showing an inability to adequately govern for the long term. The reason for that isn't party, but a failing educational system and scientific ignorance.

We don’t have a failing democracy, we have a failing society. Like it or not Trump won the election, in years past the losing party while disgruntled, didn’t go all out scorched earth.

You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself for scientific ignorance, it’s a complicated field.

You are absolutely correct. It was the people who elected him.

And it's the people who are the problem.

And if you live in an autocracy, it's a great reason to not desire democracy.

There is a clear trend being established that values lies and falsehoods over logical and observable fact. Sadly, the people involved are the same people who can vote.

Curious as to why Trump was such a better choice.
The short answer, liberals went way too far to the left. To the point of insanity. It's obvious that they hate what the country is and always has been, and want to change it to be something entirely different. People basically voted for Trump because they wanted to put an end to that. It's that simple.

Now I'm curious what "too far to the left" means objectively.

They've gone too far left on almost every issue. But the ones that jump out the most to me.... Anti second amendment, instead of looking out for minorities, they just preach hate towards white people. They've gone completely anti border. They care more about illegals than American citizens. Abortion isn't just about women's rights, it's celebrated as if it's a badge of honor to have one. It's not enough to accept Trans people, we are no longer allowed to have single sex bathrooms because it my offend them. You can't call a woman a woman or a man a man. Insanity like that.

Don't bother with him Phil. He wrote a dissertation above basically describing a slippery slope without any clue that's where most of these liberal policies lead us.

This is in bad taste but I understand the message. Trump was born on third base and has never had to deal with anything the average American does. The thought of one of his kids attending a public school is laughable and as such I can see how a regular person could question how we should expect a half percenter to empathize with what Americans worry about on a day to day basis.

All that said, if the sign was in any way meant as a threat, it’s downright terrible.

Lol, yeah ...the trumps definitely don't have to worry about some crazy idiot trying to take one of them out.

Nope..he's rich.

Come on, john...they actually have to worry about this in every move they make. Every day Americans have to worry about them being a .000001% school murder victim.

Everyone is a victim, identity politics, and govt knows best on everything. That pretty much sums it up of where they went.

Hell, Hillary's entire campaign message was identity politics...."I'm with her", basically vote for me or else you are sexist. That was her only campaign message.

Kentucky basketball very left wing ending generational poverty for poor families. Duke very right wing using their trips as mass casualty weapons and flopping around to draw favor against superior opponents.

Do you really see “ending poverty for poor people “ (redundant a bit there) ....as a uniquely “left wing” value / characteristic?

Too far left is when “traditional American liberalism “ becomes so inundated with MARXIST (communist etc) ideology and revolutionary action ... that a whole new identity and identity purpose emerges
And the subversive activities of that movement ( usually through vanguard doctrine/ agents) seeks to instill the “dictatorship of the proletariat “ as per Marx

It becomes treasonous all while concealing it’s true intentions AND ITS MURDEROUS LEGACY

that’s too far left

And that’s what’s happening

I support his administration because they backed an platform that espouses independence

What makes “the people “ the problem for becoming active in the Democratic process?

Are you referring only to those who voted Trump?

The majority of the country is embarrassed because they have a president who isn't a nice person. His twitter tirades that neither side condones being just one example. A majority also hates Hillary and that's why many were willing to vote for a shitty person, because at least he wasn't a corporatist business-as-usual establishment politician. This isn't some huge swing toward conservative politics, as JohnKBA pointed out Trump's politics have always been way more liberal than most of the republican party he infiltrated. His tariffs being a good example; it's traditionally a position so far left of center neither party endorses it. People on the right like him because he isn't Hillary, people on the left hate him cause he's an asshole that's the face of the country and they don't want anyone thinking they're associated with him. Neither side's reasons for their hate or adoration are political, they're social.

This is a key point... 15 years ago I thought the slippery slope argument was overblown, myopic and unrealistic, but it's absolutely the case, mea culpa.

this is not progress

given the reality that so many of them suffer from serious psychological difficulties and suicidal ideation, it is downright reckless and evil.

and let's not forget our choice was between someone who pays off people in their way vs someone who kills them

What percentage of the people constitutes the majority?

You’re pointing the finger at the wrong people bking.
You write of falsehoods and lies over observable fact and logic, that’s a joke. The left has ran a smear campaign for 15 months, Russian collusion, sexual harassment, leaks, lying under oath, spying on an incoming admin, changing Govt documents, using murdered kids, all in the effort to undermine Trump.
The rub is that facts aren’t on their side, they know it, they simply want power to push their agenda that doesn’t line up with a strong, independent US.

The US is a republic, we elect leaders to make decisions. If we don’t like them we vote them out.

This kind of lays everything bare, though. They (the people propping up these kids) have no self control and its really the best thing for the 2nd Amendment. They get this little taste of popular support and they fall over themselves and start talking about full on repeal of the 2nd Amendment and whatnot. They can't even hold their mask up for a couple of weeks. Sad!

[laughing] No mental health issues tied to a very similar group of people committing very similar crimes. That's galaxy brain level dumbassery

Were you surprised to find out Trump slept with a porn star?

No. Noone was. Case closed.
So you were so surprised when Bill got some spunk on a dress that the shock was too much for your heart? Trump spared you that surprise apparently. Gosh i'm happy for you.
