-2² isn't the same thing as (-2) x (-2) Order of operations requires that you evaluate the exponent and base before you even pay any attention to the minus sign. That is the reason I put (-2)² at the end. In the second instance, -2 IS the base, as designated by the parens.

And yes, nobody except for SOME engineers ever use calculus after college. Algebra is the bottle neck in mathematics for most people. If you have THAT down, and I mean down COLD, Trig, Calculus etc. is actually easier, than getting past Advanced algebra. IOW, the learning curve gets less steep. IMO anyway.
