Well said....'shake you down at work for donations'. Years and years ago when I first started my career I couldn't stand how the company I was with would pressure you. Pressure for way more than I could afford...and they knew it (knew my salary). All so they could pat themselves on the back of reaching/surpassing their 'goal'. Later when I got into management...and found out more about United Way...I quit giving a dime...and haven't for many years.
Wouldn't even let them in the front door of a fairly large company I ran.

My company doesn’t do the United Way shakedown. We have our own internal program that is used to help restaurant level employees if they experience a life emergency. Things like a house fire, injury or illness, domestic violence victim, loss of a child, things like that. When you employ upwards of 18k in your system, those incidents are more common than you think. We also have a corporate chaplain that counsels people in all levels of the company.

I didn't say it only came from property taxes. But areas with higher property taxes are better funded, even within the same city, because the majority of a school's budget in most states comes from local property taxes.

^I can only speak with *certainty* for Lexington...but in that case what you say is patently untrue, in fact money is spent in the direct opposite way. Meaning: schools in "good" neighborhoods receive much less attention/money than those in "lesser" neighborhoods.

-bottom line: level of parental involvement is directly tied to school success. It's got nuttin to do with funding.
