Not for invoking federal jurisdiction, at least not with this doj. Crossing state lines isn't always required for federal criminal jurisdiction. You can also violate a federal statute. But there are no federal statutes that just cover the average shooting, so it requires some additional facts to get there.

They were in the courtroom to arrest chauvin had he won (color of law was probably the triggering mechanism there). They might well do the same here.

Edit 18 USC 922 and 924 are the big gun crime statutes. Iirc 922 has some really vague crappy stuff they could use that would also let them talk about his past, which wasn't allowed in this trial. So I fully expect if they do indict, that's one of the charges to piggy back in a bunch of 404b evidence

It seems that way. He lives in both states part time so he didn't cross over just to get involved in the unrest like some of the rioters were doing. Also was the gun already in the state or did that come with him? If the gun was already in Wisconsin and since he lives there part of the time then I don't understand how crossing state lines even matters in this case.
