Memphis basketball falling apart..

One reason may be because there is an effort by a few to have his jersey hanging in Rupp Arena some day and Tubby has done nothing to deserve this. His career of jumping from school to school and screwing things up is his legacy. So any chance to show the real Tubby Smith is welcomed.
Listen you win a title at UK your name should be somewhere in Rupp even if it is just naming a room after you or something . I have zero problems with that . And people say it was with Pitino's players and this is true but Pitino couldn't of won with those same guys IMO . Tubby is a huge mess now and Memphis was a huge mess before him but there is no reason to harp on Tubby's last few years here . His first 6 or so were really good and then he got lazy in recruiting . It sucks but it is over with . Move on .

I respect Tubby but the proof has been there for all to see his last 4-5 years at UK and his other stops. The game has passed him by and he is no longer a great coach. He had UK recruiting and competing like a mid major team his last years here. We did more for Tubby than he done for us.

To each his own. Your standards for honoring someone in the sacred rafters of Rupp Arena are obviously very low. But in your world every one gets a trophy. The man screwed our program and has no business being anywhere near Rupp Arena much less his name there for eternity.

Everyone liked Tubby. He's a good man and he's been very good to a member of my family, but what he did here the 4-5 yrs almost made me stop watching the games (I did stop going to Rupp).

By being allowed to stay here so long, his record in futility brought the program to an all time low. I can't endorse putting his name in the rafters or anywhere else for that matter.

After what the "PC" media did to us fans for wanting him out, you couldn't help wanting to see Tubby fail, if for nothing else to justify our feelings as to why we didn't want him here.

I never thought Tubby was a "great" coach and he isn't or he would have resurrected the teams that paid him millions to do it.

Tubby won us a NC. We don't have many of those. For that I'll be forever indebted and will always wish him nothing but the best. It's hard to win it all, even at UK. I would surmise that Pitino and Cal would agree.

While in Memphis during the tournament I was able to speak with a few memphis fans. They weren't very happy getting him to start with, but they were also happy to get rid of Pastner. Seems like Pastner was doing a better job though lol
That sounds like us when we hired BCG. We were glad to have anyone, but Tubby.

It was the worst thing that could've happened for Tubby and us too.

I've been alive for 5.5 decades. We've won 4 NCs. All are special and should be celebrated. That means 93% of the time, during that span, someone else wins. To "expect" to win a NC is non-sensical. I'll take them anyway we can get them, as long as we don't cheat to get them. Tubby and his guys earned that championship.

I'd be fine with swapping the Pimp's jersey out for Tubby's. I understand your feelings and am not a big Tubby fan but lets throw that scumbag's jersey in a gutter in Louisville where it belongs, where he's chosen to lay!

I'm sure you were just dying to get on here and post how tubby is ruining something else. I really don't get nor will I ever understand why so many people want to crap all over tubby every chance they get. He's been gone here for over ten years. Let it go. That said, this thread will make it 5 pages to keep kicking him around.

Let's file this post under "Jumping to the Wrong Conclusion."

It is the lead story at cbssports.com.

I didn't write it. I simply posted it here.

Tubby will always be part of the UK basketball legacy.

I think Memphis was a pretty big mess when Tubby got there,he didn't help things any but it is not surprising to see things go the direction they have gone

Love that tubby got us a championship and created some great memories in his tenure. But now and for the past 10 years, he has zero clue how the basketball game works now. He didn't adapt like many good and great coaches have. He goes about college basketball still like it is from a bygone era. To me he is an average coach at best. Love what he did at times while here but you can't ignore how sorry of a coach he is now and has been for over 10 years.

according to cbssports' Gary Parrish

Pretty harsh.

How Tubby Smith made a gigantic mess of Memphis' program in just one year

Six of the Tigers' top eight players have announced they're transferring

by Gary Parris@GaryParrishCBS

A year ago this week, after paying Josh Pastner $1.25 million to (please) take the Georgia Tech job, Memphis offered Tubby Smith a five-year, $15.45 million contract to coach its men’s basketball team. He accepted. What Smith then inherited was a program featuring four former top-100 recruits (Dedric Lawson, K.J. Lawson, Markel Crawford, Nick Marshall) and another top-100 prospect (Charlie Moore) signed to a national letter of intent.

Not bad.

But it’s pretty bad now.

Marshall transferred to a junior college last offseason while Moore instead enrolled at California, where he averaged 12.2 points and 3.5 assists this season. Now Crawford and both Lawsons -- that’s the Tigers’ three leading scorers and rebounders -- have announced they’re also transferring, meaning there are six Memphis players who have said they’re transferring since the end of this season. Only two players (Jeremiah Martin and Jimario Rivers) are set to return. Which led Memphis athletic director Tom Bowen to release the following statement Tuesday morning:

“While student-athletes deciding to leave our university has been difficult to watch, it has not surprised us. Across the country, more than 700 Division I men’s basketball student-athletes transferred last year. That record number of transfers is expected to be eclipsed again this year as this trend continues to grow.”

Two problems here.

1. Smith said last week he was “surprised” by the Lawsons’ transfer. So Bowen’s statement totally contradicts Smith’s statement. How does he not realize that?

2. Though there are indeed roughly 700 Division I men’s basketball transfers each year, it’s important to remember there are 351 Division I men’s basketball programs. So that comes to an average of basically two transfers per school per year. Again, Memphis has six this year -- including its three best players. So what’s happening at Memphis isn’t merely a reflection of what’s happening around the country. To suggest otherwise is at best bad spin. At worst, it’s just a dumb lie.

Tubby is not our coach anymore. We have a great coach. Tubby was nothing but a class act while he was here and made the tournament every year. He won a title(with Rick's talent), but still won a title. Calipari is our coach, a much better coach I may add. We should be thankful for what we have now and not cheer for the downfall of others.

Just like I cheer for UK players in the NBA, I cheer for Tubby to be successful in everything he does in life. Tubby's teams provided some great memories when I was younger and I'll always be thankful for his service to the team I love.. So what if some pundits criticized us when he left, ITS BEEN 10 YEARS! Get over it and stop rooting for the failures of others.

Is it allowed to post any article defending Orlando Smith? From this actual piece of reporting, not a hit piece, it shows a program that was going off the rails in 2016 with several players jumping ship. A new coach came in to settle things down, but a dad assistant that was not qualified was demoted and his star player sons did not like it one bit. Say what you want about Tubby here, but a Dad as an assistant that he did not hire is his problem. Pastner made an unethical move to get multiple recruits and Tubby had to deal with the after-effects. Tubby won't win a final 4, but if he can stabilize and clean up the program it will be a much better job to the guys he passes the program to in a few years.

Really? I get that Pitino now coaches Louisville but the man brought us back from the dead and when he left we were on top of college basketball. Compare that to what Tubby did.

I'd argue that what Pitino did was more impressive than what Cal is doing, to this point, and I'm a huge Cal fan. Anyone who wasn't old enough or wasn't watching around the time P took this job can't fathom the amazing job while he was here.

The "dad" assistant wasn't qualified? Here's a quote from the article: "Prior to the Memphis gig, Lawson was a high school head coach and had led his team at Hamilton High to an undefeated season and state title with his sons on the roster."

That doesn't even get into the fact that the guy is connected in Memphis, important at that school, and has multiple kids who are top prospects (assistants need to recruit right). The guy was definitely qualified to be an assistant coach.

And you fail to mention the mismanagement of players that the article describes, which is on Tubby.

Stop trying to defend the man, he's what, 3 or 4 failed stops beyond his failures here. How many times must he show that he's not what he's reputed to be before some of you see reality.

Why cant people see the pattern that is Tubby Smith? He has never had any sort of success outside of a few years at Kentucky and Georgia, I just dont understand why he is even still coaching the college game. He needs to be an assistant somewhere at best.

Tubby is the only prominent coach I know of that had two 'Team Turmoils' at one school, UK. Sounds like he's got another one.

That's almost bad as a prominent coach have hookers for the boys or decades of academic fraud. "Turmoils"

You keep missing the point. Over and over.

You cannot win at Memphis without allowing situations like this to happen. Lawson has a basketball pedigree AND is connected to the Memphis recruiting SCENE. He's also got FOUR recruits that will sign where he tells them to. Two of them big time recruits. Memphis NEEDS all of them. That was part of his job description when he took the job.

But Saul Smith, his son, was more important for him to consider. Give me a break. Tubby just pulled a Tubby and it's costing him.

Memphis lost last season by the worst margin in decades. This team next season will be the worst Memphis team in my lifetime (31).

He wasn't hired to tank the ship. He was hired to stabilize and get back to the tournament by year 3. That's not going to happen.

How many will continue to back this guy after he puts his sons career ahead of his contractual duties as a head coach. These programs are paying him multimillions. This is what cost him at Minnesota too.

Time for him to retire and pay someone to hire his son. The guy is terrible

Tubby is out of his element.

I don't even blame Tubby really. I blame the idiotic AD who thought Tubby Smith was the right person to lead that program. There literally couldn't be a worse fit.
