List of Coaches to Replace Cal.

That's why we need Barney to step down ASAP.

One thing we can all agree of is we don't want Barnhardt hiring Cal's replacement. He had to be convinced to hire Cal in the first place after making perhaps the worst hire in the history of the program with BCG.

Cal may have saved Barnhardt's job tbh....you have to remember he also hired Joker. What a train wreck.

Don’t know much about Vogel and Loyd.

Lloyd has European pipeline and was under Few at Gonzaga for like 20 years.

Vogel was a student manager under Pitiner and as you probably know was Lakers HC.

Both would be on my short list. Lloyd is the guy when Cal quits imo. He is 47 I think...perfect age, great recruiter, XO's have to be strong.

Holtmann and Mike Brey is the names that KSR use to throw out there as Mitch’s top choice for Calipari’s replacement. I’ll still watch every game as I always have but I may need a case of Bang energy drink to stay awake. In other words, I do not want these coaches at UK
If Mitch think it’s a good idea to hire then, I want them avoided

The fact that some of you list Scott Drew tells me you have no clue what you're talking about.

Drew has been past the sw16 3 times in 20 years. Only 1 of those was in the past decade. Are you all going to be good with that kind of record?

Eric Musselman has done nothing. His rise to fame is 2 E8's! He chokes in big games and spends most of the gane flailing on the sidelines like a whiny school girl.
How many E8 did Cal have over is 20 years at UMass and Memphis?

What has Holtmann done?
Hasn’t done anything to justify hiring him at UK. IMO. Wait 5-10 years and see what kind of coach he turns out to be. I like the fact he’s from Kentucky and he’s coaching at Ohio State, but not sure he’s ready for UK.

None of the ones I listed are clear cut candidates. None of them will ever be interviewed or offered by UK. And thank God!

It's going to be at least 5 years before UK can afford the buyout. It's currently a little over 40mill. It goes down by 6 mill a year. So in 5 years it will be around 10 mill, which is when we could realistically justify paying it.

By that point there will be names we don't even know about at this point.

If it were now: Wright, Donovan, Bennett, Sampson, Few, Vogel and Stevens would be my first calls. Make those 7 tell you no.

However, I will let you in on a little secret. If Cal were to step away right now, Chris Holtmann is who would be offered the job. He isn't who I want or would recommend, but Barney has been dialed in on him for a while, and Chris knows it as well.
Lol. Sure thing.

Let’s keep a running list of coaches we should hire to replace Cal. Every time a coach wins a game against a descent team someone starts a new thread about hiring that coach to replace Cal. I’m not supporting Cal, but it’s really difficult to keep up with the coaches we want to hire. Please use this thread to post the name of who you want to hire to be our new coach. Just keep bumping the thread and by the end of the BB season we will all know who our next coach will be for the 2023-2024 season.
He's probably in highschool right now. The person will have plenty of time to become a solid coach

I would go with Tommy Lloyd, based not only on style of play, but on how he was able to hit the ground running at Arizona.

Now that he’s on the sidelines, you would expect Jay Wright to get a call.

There are some other intriguing candidates, but hard to bring someone to Kentucky who hasn’t proven themselves on the big stage.

Some may say Lloyd hasn’t proven himself, but top 5 all last year, Sweet Sixteen, right back in the mix this year early, entertaining style, guy in his 40s…he’s the kind of guy you take a shot on.
This is exactly right. He would be a long haul hire. Would hate to hire an “older” hit the then have to replace him after a few years.

So you’re saying he choked in the tournament.
Yes, if it makes you feel better. A 1st year coach lost in his first ever time as coach in the S16.

Meanwhile, HOF coach lost in the 1st in the 1st game. Wonder which one did better?

Just what everyone wants, another post of future coaches.
Just trying to have one thread that everyone can use throughout the season to list their choice for our new coach. Every time a coach wins a big game someone starts a new thread wanting that coach to be the replacement for Cal. Just hoping this thread would stop the new repetitive threads we see daily.

Unless you have the money to pay his buyout or you are capable of taking Cal out somehow, I don't know where you think he is going.

Rupp has been a museum for years. It's the quiest arena I have ever been to, and that was the case even several years ago. It's just a horrible setup. Put the old people further up and pack the area around the court with students and young people who actually engage.

Nice retort! You win for sure!

Beard isn't leaving TX and he has a boring grind it out style that our fans claim to hate.

I just don't see anything that makes me think Nate Oats is going to make it long-term in a p5 conference, let alone at UK.

Lloyd has done well, so far. We need to see how he does with more post-seasons, but I think it's unrealistic he leaves AZ or the west coast. Those west coasters tend to like it out there.

IMO, the buyout is way too high for at least 5 years. Barney would be dooming himself to pay anything above 10mill for it. So unless Cal walks and leavs that on the table, I think he is here until at least 2027.
Sonny, it is evident that you have not been past the bus-stop.

You all would have fired Adolph Rupp. Did you know he only made it to 1 final 4 in his last 14 years at UK, including missing the NCAA tournament 4 times. Who would we have named our arena after?

Did you know that by the time he was 63 (Cal’s current age) , Rupp had 4 NCAA titles?

As far as Drew, You can have more success at UK than you can at Baylor. I think it’s a miracle that he has ever won there.
It's really not though. It's a P5 school with a lot of wealthy donors and a very talent rich state. Baylor is a good school as well. It shouldn't be hard to win there at all.

Of course, then people talk about the player murder, however, Drew made the E8 in 2009 and 2012, then didn't make it past a SW16 again until 2021. So why the long drought? He was recruiting really well during that period, too!

It’s odd I’m convinced 3 coaches who have clearly established cultures at one school or are in the NBA and Retired wouldn’t coach at Kentucky. Musselman isn’t getting hired because Kentucky is stuck with cal, but if he were gone musselman would not be a desperation hire
It's odd you have convinced yourself that these coaches won't come but are convinced Musselman will. It's also odd that you think NBA guys won't come when 2 of our last 4 coaches were NBA guys. So, yes, it's odd!

Musselman isn't getting hired because he isn't going to get interviewed with that record. We already made a desperation hire in BCG, we don't need another.

It's also odd you continually ignore the fact he's emotionally not capable of handling it here. https://nypost.com/2022/11/24/arkansas-eric-musselman-in-wild-scuffle-with-san-diego-state-fans/

Tell me why you think any of those coaches would accept the job at Kentucky, because there’s not a scenario where they would and man he is at arkanasas they are crazy like Kentucky and he is doing fine there

Kelvin Sampson, just bring him in for 3-5 years while you find a younger long term solution.
I think he would do a great job, but I think it would take a few years to get it really rolling. There will probably be a big exodus after Cal leaves, and none of the guys remaining would be players that Sampson recruited to fit into his system. Sampson will be 70 soon and I doubt he is up for revamping a system, even if it is a blue blood.

Another fair weather fan. Bitch and whine, bitch and whine. If you’re a real fan, you’ll support our coach. You don’t have to like him, but that doesn’t mean you can’t support him.

Who’s on your list? Not agreeing or disagreeing with you but just curious.

I don’t have a list. I’ve said for a while, there are no home run hires for the past few years or next couple. Someone has to emerge as a clear leader. There is no one yet. Calipari was the clear leader in 2009. He’s gone downhill at this point but he was the clear leader at that time and it wasn’t close.

The clear leader for a program like Kentucky isn’t there right now. I only see possible NBA heads and assistants as the leader type coaches who could bring the flare necessary to step in and make Kentucky rise to the top. Even with those guys in mind, no one gets me excited for the future of the program.
