This season was his chance to get shit right. And so far he hasn’t.
Wasn't that supposed to be last year (after losing to St. Peters)?

And the year before that (after 9-16)?

It ain't 2010 and Cal ain't getting shit right. Ever. Just GTFO and give us our program back.

I can recall two specific times last night Deej over-penetrated, when he had available a simple lob to Ugo. Either turned it over or threw up BIG TRASH at the rim.

He's mentally effed imo. Can't make the easy play. Doesn't have a counter when the scouting reports negate him going left. Can't shoot over the top. But maybe the wildest thing is his REFUSAL to simply go right, as a right-handed player. Even once he starts, like odd ass muscle memory, he still tries to come back left against the grain, despite having a clear lane to the basket. Dude can't even jump off the correct foot. Was that bunny he missed on the breakway vs UGA? I don't remember. It's absolutely insane, almost like a Knoblauch yip or something.

Called it at the beginning of the season with him but y'all get too caught up in hype and rankings. He's just not a very good player (considering the expectations and the HE IS HIM shit) despite being given every opportunity to flourish with the talent surrounding him. Numbers AND the eye test speak for itself. He hasn't hit double figures in over a month. Not exactly trending the right direction one week before March.

Dajuan was a DAWG. DJ isn't.

Re: Wagner.

I think he's a good kid and a good ballplayer. However, I don't think he can do much besides be a ball dominant PG (as in he can't really play off Reed unless Reed is the 2, which doesn't work that great either). Seems the move for him is to spell Reed with Reeves and Dillingham as wings to dish to.

He’d be an excellent fourth guard. He could stay and develop into a terrific ballplayer. Neither will happen.

Nice to see GYERO talking points on a national level. Titus started the season LOVING this team and hates Cal because of it as much as we do. There's some more discussion around it but it only lets you clip 1 minute.

Cal finally realized that Bradshaw isn’t a lottery pick… or first rounder. So, he gets the bench.

Now he needs to get real with DJ And Edwards. Edwards didn’t even have 1 goddamn rebound last night. ~~~~~>bench.

Tre, 3Rs, Adou & UGo… there’s the base rotation. I’m no Bennie, but I’m not full retard.

Reed isn’t even trying to score on offense like he was before Wagner was out.

I looked at his stats and he did take double digit shots against Ole Miss and Gonzaga, but at Auburn he took 6 shots and last night he took 7 shots.

From my perspective Reed has to be aggressive and looking for his shots just like Dilly and Reeves do.

Now I will say playing Reed, Dilly and Reeves means someone is going to take less shots due to there being only so many and with that lineup clearly Reed becomes very passive.

-dollars to donuts he's doing exactly as his coach is telling him... "facilitate"/get others going.

^I too wish he'd hunt his shots more... sadly he'd prolly get yanked if a couple don't go in. Doesn't get the same patience level as "cals guys".

^this shit sounds like BJW shit... but it's absolutely true. It's a pattern.

The problem with DJ is he's a simple scout. Force him right, go under the ball screen, relocate. He has to improve his game and get out of his comfort zone. He so completely uncomfortable with the way he was being defended last night. It is definitely a confidence issue. He knows how he's being played. I have faith that he'll get over it and keep improving,, but who knows when . . . or where.

Guys.. Settle down. UCONN lost to a top 15 ranked Creighton on Tuesday. We’re fine. Yes, I know that UCONN’s record 24-3 and they’re in the driver’s seat for a 1 seed and UK is 6-6 in their last 12 with tons of flaming red flags but come on but this proves that ANYONE can win a title this year including UK.

Who wants to start a pep rally in the Hyatt Lobby on Saturday afternoon? Or better yet send the players a signed card that reads BBN Still Supports You!!! We can do it!!

This is what I'm talking about, an example of the many -- watch this play. Absolutely bizarre.

He actually brings it back left and creates a harder finish, allowing the defender to contest. Any other guy would explode of the left foot and put that shit away.

Was a big miss, too...considering time/place.
He should have made that layup regardless of what hand he shot it with.

Disagree. I think DJ is actually much better off the ball, and the stats would back that up. Like a lot of attack-first guards, he's much better when he catches it on the reversal or off initial action and then has space to operate. Here are his 2-man combos sorted by Net Rating (min. 100 possessions):

Shep
Rob
Reeves
Thiero

Aren't those 4 just completely obvious?
This combo has played 160 out of 1890 total possessions this season.

Here are our best 4-man combos, btw, sorted by Net Rating. Notice anything?

Now, here they are sorted by possessions played:

One more point to wrap up: no single 5-man lineup has played more than 115 possessions this season.

So in baseball terms they've found a hole in his swing and he isn't adjusting at all.

Anything can happen in March!!!

...ignores that fact that statistically a non 1 or 2 seed only wins about once a decade. 2014 has bought Cal a ton of bogus leeway imo.
It took several miracle last second shots for that team to advance. That is where we are at now. We are praying for a team to just catch lightning in a bottle to overcome Cal’s incompetence. Not a good formula for success.

If NFL bro needs any further proof he’s watching male Kardashians, just tune into Sportscenter this morning where the top story was a QB unfollowing his team on social media for the f*******g love of god, make all NFL fans perish* and do this country a service.

*besides Packers fans.

Also during the Gonzaga game Jay Wright talked about as a recruit the knock on Wagner was he couldn’t go left. Jay was happy to see the progress he made going left and how it isn’t a weakness anymore.

I’d love to see how righty dependent he was compared to what we see now.

An interesting trend in recent games has been a decline in the number of 3's we take. For the season, we are taking about 36% of our shots from 3. Over the last 10 games, that rate is down to a more traditional amount of 32% for a Cal team. That has been matched with a concomitant drop in our adjusted offensive efficiency ranking. Over that span, our offense ranks 20th.

I lauded Cal for embracing a new approach. But as the season has progressed, he has fallen into his typical lines of thought and solutions. Offensively, the team has become more Cal typical with regards to our shot type.

Jay was talking out his ass on that one.

I am not comparing myself to DJ Wagner, but at the end of 8th grade I got blocked from behind on a fast break in a key game so I spent the summer working on my finger roll so that my arm would be out-stretched on layups and I wouldn't get blocked.

On the high school team in 9th grade my coach was like "wtf are you doing; shoot a normal layup". But normal layups felt weird. And in games I'd revert back to finger rolls.

So is it possible that Wagner heard he couldn't go left well and therefore has been doing nothing but shooting left handed layups all year to the point it feels wrong to go right?

Final 4 is the real goal: Gotta get there first, then anything can literally happen. This team doesn't appear to have much of a chance at all, but it happens about every year. I just hate "ceiling" talk, always have, I've posted about it a million times in this thread, for a decade+ -- feel free to search it.

It's dumb as it relates to the NCAA Tournament. Oh, this team is S16, or E8 ceiling (in December, etc). My take has nothing to do with this year/team, or Cal, or whatever else everyone seems desperate to tie it to. When i post facts, it's not a John F Calipari endorsement or vote of confidence. JFC

2023 Final 4

Uconn: 4 Seed
SDSU: 5 Seed
FAU: 9 seed
Miami: 5 seed

Anyone remember their ceilings? I expect that trend to continue, although not to that extreme, in the new portal era. There aren't any truly great teams anymore.

Great stuff. Also makes me want to puke.

Simple explanation for that:
1) Ugo and Bradshaw have been playing more
2) Thiero is back
3) Mitchell has been out
4) Cal sucks
