GOLF thread

So you're buying the blood money stuff that is actually just the PGA trying to protect their business interests. Did the PGA take a stand on South Africa as I can't remember? How long has it been since Augusta started allowing black members as I would imagine the PGA refused to allow their players there previously?

I'll hold for your pious answers. Thanks.

^Imagine if the PGA had worked with LIV to coordinate the scheduling of events. get a percentage of the action from LIV for their events in exchange for allowing PGA players to participate, co-sponsored events here... naming right, player endorsements... you name it. The PGA would have been flush.

Now that they've completely demonized LIV it is going to be hard. They are literally risking the end of the PGA and that was completely unnecessary as the enemy they picked has unlimited money.
You're lobbying so hard for a select few players. Why should they coordinate? Allowing current, non-LIV players, to play LIV events is not in the PGA's interest. That means one less PGA event they play. It dilutes the brand to sponsors and tv partners, hence less money.

The LIV guys knew what would happen.

LIV surprisingly is getting most of what they want and pretty quickly. There havent been really any hard stands against them except for you arent playing the regular pga tour.

That being said no way im coming home from golf on Sunday and tuning into the CW to watch Justin Harding and Wade Ormsby battle it out for a title. Nor will i ever care about if the Range Goats are able to upset the Iron Heads for the team title.

The biggest question is how long the Saudis accept not turning over an acceptable profit. Everyone has a price and although they have more than enough money to burn, what is the ultimate objective because in the end its always about the money. They can try and Sportswash all they want but losing money will become an issue.

Paying mostly washed up or no-name golfers millions of dollars to play a sport that is not a Top 10 top sport in the world while not having the sponsors or extravagant tv deals is not a sound business plan to me. Will give them credit though (outside of the good work the PGA does for charity) they got the PGA Tour off their Greedy/Pompous behinds to do more for the tour, it's fans and their players.

IMO, if the PGA Tour really wanted to stick it to LIV they need to make more events like the Waste Management. Make these tournaments like the Honda Classic more of a real sports event. If you watch LIV, they make the environment entertaining and fun to watch. I admit, I have watched some of it and it is entertaining but the fields are rather "meh" outside the known players they acquired.

I am sure it has been discussed and I probably missed it but I am enjoying Full Swing on Netflix. I'm only 3 episodes in but it's a pretty good behind the scenes look at the golfers and their lives.

I watched the whole thing in 1 sitting binging it as I love golf and I thought it was fascinating.

As for the folks saying LIV is only getting the washed up and they won't watch... I'll watch Bryson vs Brooks with a little Cameron on the side all day every day. That trickle will become a surge as more players jump. The PGA has got this wrong and the sooner they realize it the better it will turn out for them. At this point they are gambling with their entire tour being toppled when that never had to be on the table.

How did my buddy lose money? I know there are dead heat rules but how can you not at least get your stake back, lol?

British Open and the Masters allowing the LIV players to play. The PGA is allowing LIV players to play in PGA Championship.

You guys are shortsighted on where this is going. LIV is here to stay and they are winning on all fronts. More golf is better for everyone involved. These hypocritical "moral" arguments don't have a leg to stand on when viewed historically.

Get on board or get left behind, folks. Lot of great golf will be played on the LIV tournaments coming up and the global popularity of the game will grow with it. More money and more golf is better for everyone:

The series begins its second season this weekend at El Camaleón Golf Course at the Mayakoba resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Future events will take place literally all over the world, from Australia to Spain to Saudi Arabia. LIV has 14 events scheduled in 2023, all of which are strategically placed around majors and top-tier PGA Tour events. Three of the United States-based events will be at clubs owned by former President Donald Trump.

How many viewers does LIV’s stream average? They’re growing the game tremendously, so thankful for LIV bringing 17,000 souls to the sport.

In the early 70's the average NBA attendance was about 8,000 a game.

People don't know or understand much about LIV yet. Hell, I have almost no idea of when and where to watch them. All I know is I love golf and I will absolutely watch it when I can. Bryson, are you kidding me, of course I am going to watch.

As soon as they have highlight moments on ESPN because of some fantastic finish. That's all that it will take. They have the financing to outlast everyone. They aren't going anywhere. They already have enough players to make some fantastic moments so of course it will eventually catch on.

The PGA knows it. They are already backtracking. Plus there are the court cases advancing that they will want to go away.

Money settles this in case you can't see that far into the future. LIV will settle in and eventually be a little more popular version of the European tour and people will wonder why the PGA ever made arses of themselves over it.

Bonus Golf on CW right now with some of the greatest players in the world out there. Right when football season is over, too.

Somehow I don't feel like Saudi Arabia is any more legitimate or that murder is OK, either?

I didn't care for the shorts. Makes the game look too recreational. I hope they're not going to go for some dumb "everyman's golf league"...

They did that when they started....shorts, 54 holes, teams, participation trophies to all (checks), a casual glimpse of the results a day or two later, the winners boasting as if they just won a PGAT event....

Yeah, I think all of that is a mistake.

Growing up a Big Red Machine fan, I hated the American League with a passion just because of the designated hitter so I don't like when they change a bunch of stuff to try to make it different. LIV should play golf the way everyone else does and knock off all the gimmicks.

Are u related to Norman or something? I will never watch a minute of Liv and don’t know anyone who will. None of my large group of golfer friends will watch it and I don’t know where u get the idea that more and more people will watch it. Quit while you are behind.

Do you guys all wear matching shirts, too? Maybe the same haircuts?

Obviously you have strong feelings and you have certainly decided a hive mentality is what works best for you so good luck with that.

As for me, I'd be bored out of my mind if everyone around me thought just like I did. Try a little variety there and maybe you'll like it.

What it feels like is that you think something is wrong with people that do not agree with you. That usually is a sign of leading an insular life surrounded by only like minded people. You find this in rural folk a lot. People that have never lived more than a few miles from where they were born. They grow to fear the outside world and are comforted by the familiarity of being just like everyone else.

Let me guess. Close cropped hair. Bill cap. Sunglasses resting on visor. Shorts with shirt tucked in. You wear your golf glove while you sip a beer and it makes you feel like a rebel. You've had the same core friends for your whole life. You take an occasional trip to Hilton Head. One of your friends cheated on their wife one trip but you never did. Church every Sunday and Wednesday. Voted twice for Trump.

Amiclose?

Put the bottle down and seek help immediately. Lord above.

Did you check with your "large group of golfer friends" before you replied as you wouldn't want to be out of lock step? That would be like wearing a different shirt or watching a game of golf they didn't approve of. When those lemmings swim, any strays get gobbled up.

Meanwhile, since you guys spent the day watching pickleball and cornhole, I was watching a lot of great golf from some of the world's best golfers today.

Strange, I don't feel like I suddenly like Saudi Arabia any more than I did before? I still think killing reporters is a terrible thing to do. Their sneaky plot to brainwash me using golf just doesn't seem to be working? Maybe you're not disliking them enough?

So, turns out LIV has non- compete as PGA. No surprise which hurts LIV player arguments. Cannot have both ways.

.2 tv rating vs sub par PGA field.

Thought you said you would never watch LIV🤷‍♂️Crushers looking like winners and Charles Howell III won by 4.

You must be in your 20’s and that’s all that need to be said. Effing moron. Geez.

Did any of your large group of golfing friends vote for me or was it unanimous that you consider me a moron? How large was the halfwit camp? Nobody held out for possibly autistic?

How often do you guys meet up, anyway? Do you have some kind of alert like a bat signal shining in the sky or something like that when an urgent meeting is called?

So, the no name PGA finish was more compelling than Charlie Three Sticks lapping the "field". To have III. Uilhein and Grace as top 3, that's not what the Saudi's are looking for. If it was DJ or Koepka or Bryson, maybe get some viewers.

As some contracts were reported as 2 years, for the big guys longer, it'll be interesting if some of these guys have anyplace to go after this year.

Where have you gone Wade Ornsby, a Saudi Nation turns it's eyes to you. Koo-koo-ka-choo.

The Honda turned out to be a hell of a tournament, even without a lot of big names, Kirk who has battled alcoholism for years won for the first time over Eric Cole, a rookie at age 34, and Gerhard, who was trying to become only the 3rd Monday qualifier since 1986 to win a PGA event, all those guys were nervous as hell playing for what would be a career changing moment. Amazing finish on 18 with several balls in the water, in regulation, neither Cole nor Kirk hit the green in regulation, on a 547 yard par 5 - how often do you see that happen in the PGA?

OTOH, at the LIV a bunch of guys in shorts were jack slapping it all over the course, with some kind of party music in the background. But their games were sharp as hell: On a 7000 yard par 71 course, Stenson, Garcia and DeChambeau were E, Phil was +1, Dustin J +4, Bubba Watson +6, Westwood and Oosthuizen +8. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 Think I will take a hard pass.

There’s a lot of irony in this post - making fun of LIV but the PGA guys hit “several balls in the water” that’s more or less not “sharp as hell”

I don’t have a side but we don’t have to play the political game where you take one side and ram the opposition like they are awful - both can coexist - if you don’t live LIV then don’t pay attention to it.

The LIV guys made their own bed. Here is their future at the majors this year.

LIV = highly paid exhibitions. At some point they are gonna start getting hurt in OWR points and they will have to qualify for the majors. I've resolved to it, to each his own, if that's what they want, or until the Saudi's get tired of losing money. Then what? I've also wondered what happens to the guys who get cut from LIV when they find somebody they like better for the top 48. They don't really care about these guys IMO, is the irony of it all.

Thoughts on LIV.

Short are awful. Production is annoying AF with the music all over the place - not sure who thought golf needed a soundtrack. Lot of players (Hello DJ!) look like they took the guaranteed money as a way to finally just let go at the dinner table. DJ has got to be at least 30lbs heavier than he ever played on the PGA tour. I hate the team crap.

So, lots to be desired. Lot of great players there. Have to say I was less than impressed by how they envisioned what golf should look like on their tour because I soundly did not like anything. Even the coverage was too skitty and jumping around too much like they were thinking it would be better to show every shot then jump immediately to the next shot.

Golf needs to build slowly like baseball does. To incrementally ratchet up the pressure until it is unbearable. You can't do that jumping all over the place with disco balls and stupid music. I hope that was a Mexico thing and not a permanent fixture on their tour.

I was picturing some dumbass sitting somewhere in a meeting with a laser pointer grinning like a cheshire cat and saying "WE'RE GOING TO MAKE GOLF FUN!!!"

Oh, a lot of players looked incredibly uncomfortable. I don't know what kind of stubble Bubba Watson was growing, but he looked like he was auditioning for a spot as a zombie on Last of Us.

The biggest concern LIV should have (outside of losing money and not being able to gain a large amount of viewers) is if their top guys even care to win seeing how much they are making by showing up.
