GOLF thread

LIV is gonna be good for the game. It is very tough to make it as a pro golfer because there was only one tour in North America that paid great money. LIV offers that second way to make big money for a talented golfer. This will allow more opportunities for talented players on the pga tour.

I played with many dudes in D1 golf that beat the hell out of dufner, Hoffman, and luke donald, but they couldn’t get thru q school on their first try and gave up. My old roommate, Mike Kirk, never lost to Bubba Watson and dominated Carl Peterson in juco. He played number 1 at UNLV in front of Adam scott, Charley Hoffman, and Jeremy Anderson and won 2 college tournaments for unlv. He gets a sponsors exemption into Las Vegas inv and makes cut and 25,000. Then missed second stage by 2 shots and never tried again. He should’ve been a house hold name. I think LIV will help give more deserving guys a shot.

Changing up from the LIV stuff for a bit.

With Kentucky about to go live for handicap posting on March 1. What is everybody’s current handicap?

Currently 10.8 - based on recent play that number will go up a little bit as I start to post. Been a tough early season so far.

Anyone purchasing any new clubs for this season?

Looking to get new wedges, have hit Vokey for years, but this year will at least look at Cleveland and Calloway. I’ve been talking to more and more people that swear by Cleveland wedges..

That's a minor league story. There is Korn Ferry, mini-tours, etc. You can make 6 figures playing state tourneys in Arizona and Florida without leaving those states.
This is never about begrudging anyone getting what they can, but when they complain they can't have both, circumventing rules, you've lost me.
LIV can't keep having Howell, last PGA win 2018, Schwartzl 2016, Grace, oppo field winner in 2021, even Stenson not won since 2016, win tournaments and say they are as competitive as PGA when they are not.
As Kingseve says, it's tough too make it on PGA, you can't discount the difference in competition.

Until you have played in the minor leagues of pro golf it’s really hard to wrap your head around.

-shitty courses
-money grab for small tour owner
-6 hour rounds
-living off burgers and fries
-hotel rooms
-hwy miles
-1000 dollar entry fees
-low dollar payouts

I’ve seen many talented players and their careers die prematurely on the mini tours.

LIV will allow many more opportunities on the PGA tour.

Charlie Howell, great guy btw, never had to go to tour school. But, Michael Kirk was better. Kirk was a poor kid from South Africa.

Howell got 7 sponsors exemptions and Kirk got 1. Kirk had won the western amateur, the northern amateur twice, the juco national championship, the dogwood invitational, 10 juco tournaments and 2 for UNLV. Howell didn’t have that kind of record.

9.1 here which is amazing to me since I shoot more 84's than 79's.

Playing Vokey's now, but played Cleveland's for years and loved them.

Had a driver day a couple of weeks ago at my club and I hit the new Ping better than the Taylor Made and the Paradym. Kinda surprised me, but if I get a new driver this year, it will probably be the Ping.

Sounds like my daughter's attempt to make it on Broadway. For every big star, there's a 1000 in the wings that would like to be the big star.

It takes a lot of breaks. Apparently in Hollywood it doesn't hurt to have an actor/actress parent either. Not that show business is unique in that regard

Yes! Hey making it is a bitch and takes hard work, some good fortune and money.

There are handful of golfers every year that should be on tour. Pro golf needs more room for more guys to make big money.

In the sense that they have a tour of 48 more players. Correct.

They get to cherrypick from PGA and European PGA after those tours and S African and Australian tours have done the heavy lifting. Thus, opening spots on PGA tour and others. Still same qualifying as always. Yes, players get exemptions, see Dru Love, the Coody's, etc. It's a grind, no doubt. To say it's unfair is misleading.

Agree on the top half, but it is unfair for some 22 year olds to be exempt from q school. For example

Adam scott played behind Kirk at UNLV and never won the western amateur(many consider this tourney the toughest in amateur golf), the northern amateur, nor did he he get to the finals of the US pub links. Kirk did those things and didn’t get the exemptions on the euro tour like scott or Howell on the pga tour. It’s not fair, nor is life. But, pro golf could use more room for players

Kinda Off topic but look how many of these wouldn’t have prob ever been famous without platforms like American idol like Kelly Clarkson/Carrie underwood

It's pretty simple...if you're good enough to get your card, then you're set. Otherwise, the world needs ditch diggers too. The thought process that someone's career died prematurely on the mini tours....well, had they been good enough, it wouldn't have.

Cawood and I have a friend that is still chasing his dream and just recently landed a spot on the Mexican tour. Whether or not that results in something bigger remains to be seen. There are tons and tons of Ty Tryon's in the country trying their hardest to get that card...it can be something as simple as one putt per round that didn't fall that sends them packing. To say they "deserved" more or that they were "better" than someone else is just locker room nonsense....they didn't capitalize when given the chance....the others did.

The LIV tour is not plan B for these guys...it is a money grabbing farce, nothing else. Their choice to play for the money, not the glory. To say that CHIII is now a household name again after his 3 round win is laughable....sorry, he's an afterthought.

Currently a 6.4 with a few poor rounds to start the year off. Really trying to make a bigger effort to play and practice more this year. Life keeps getting in the way. Driver is 5 years old so may need to look into a new one. Think I may have a small crack in the head (hear some rattling when I shake it now). Woods are 8 years old. Want to get my swing going before I get fitted plus not too excited spending $600+ on a new driver or get any woods. Reminder that golf is a very expensive sport/hobby.

Ok. Says the guy who didn’t play college golf or pro golf. Check the Michael Kirk record book.

He beat Ben Curtis in the finals of the western am in 2000. He lost in the finals of the us am public links. A win gets a masters invite. He won the dogwood inv over the whos’s -who off college studs including Adam scott, Charley Hoffman, kuchar, bubba, and 100 more big names.

The kid didn’t have any money and had to return to S Africa and work

^^^^that story is repeated yearly all over the country. X player beats so and so....

A few years later, so and so is drinking a pint from the Claret Jug and X is selling Cutco Cutlery.

Sports is full of what if stories. Hell, I threw 90 in HS until a rotator injury ended my college scholarship chances.

I think if he gave up so quickly he probably wasn’t sure he wanted the grind of trying to get on tour. Which is fine. But I think he easily with his record could have been able to land a sponsor. Or take a club pro job somewhere with the emphasis that he could spend lots of time working on his game. It sounds like he was a great player. But college success doesn’t always translate to professional success. I know someone who beat Xander Schaufelle 7 & 6 in a US Am. He is an outstanding player. But he is not better than Xander.

9.3 which is a total joke given that I break 85 about once every 3 rounds. No new equipment for me. Going to take 2 or 3 lessons. I think that's money and time better spent

So, with online tee times, groups of 2 take up prime tee times. So, yesterday, twosome in front of us, twosome behind us. Wouldn't it make sense for course to reserve right to pair them up, even if it delays tee time for one group?

I live in Louisville, had some time to kill this afternoon and took the clubs over to golf headquarters in Middletown to get re-gripped.

Golf headquarters has a great staff, talked to the owner Tony for a little bit. Tony is one hell of a nice guy, they gave me a little bit more for my old wedges than I was expecting. It wasn’t about the money, but that was the tipping point.

They definitely saw me coming a mile away, I ended up walking out of there with three new wedges. Hit a few brands and ended up staying with Vokey.

A fool, and his money are easily parted. 😂

They do that at Champions and Keene, there was one spot open in a foursome at 3 yesterday, so I signed up online in a threesome, not knowing who it would be, but got paired with three young guys I had never met, played nine with them and had a good time.

Yes! He should have kept going. At that time he didn’t have money and the rand or s African currency was shit.

He finished 18th at second stage out of 100 at la purisma, which is windy as hell. 2 shots better and he’s in final stage at 22 years old.

4 rounds shouldn’t decide a players career.

Mac ogrady missed at tour school 16 times, but he is considered one of the best strikers ever. I know him well, and he would tell you there is a lot of luck and money involved in making the tour. Mostly talent and nut sack get a card, but many slip thru the cracks.

Golf Headquarters is fantastic but think Tony has sold it. They’ve kept him on but I think Junior Bridgeman is one of the new primary owners. Not a sole owner though.

I wouldn’t doubt it, Junior Bridgeman has enough money to buy everything. All that being said, Tony is a great guy, I hope he got rich.

Recs for best stay and play in Kentucky? I saw Perry Park, Rosewood, and Longview. Any review on those?

We will probably do a state park (possibly stay at Ky Dam and play there, Cullen, Barkley) but wanted to get more info.

Did that 2 summers ago. Not a fan of Cherry Blossom, may want to substitute Houston Oaks.
Also, Richmond, Boone Trace and Gibson Bay.

Boone's Trace is private so you would need to work out a time if/when they allow public play for a given day.

Gibson would not be recommended imo for a group traveling in. Decent track, but have had too many slow play instances there. Also, traveling to Richmond would not be advised if staying downtown.

I recently purchased a Callaway Jaws Full Toe Raw wedge that I like. I am a high handicapper but it is a great club. My daughter had pretty much taken it over so I bought her one yesterday. 😂

When did it go private? I played it last year I think.

Kinda weird, I fell out of love with Boones Trace after loving it my first 5 years playing it. It did get harder but it’s just not a course I care to play.
