GOLF thread

I guess the me, me first mentality is making it's way into High School golf now. I had the mother of 2 girls who are pretty good golfers (typically shoot in the mid to high 70's) tell me neither plan to play on their high school team this year. One will be a senior and the other a junior but they are just planning to play in a Jr PGA series because they can get more exposure for colleges according to her.

I get why you might do that in basketball, football or any other contact sport where you could get injured and ruin your career but why skip out on your team in golf? I mean most schools only play in 5-10 tournaments per season and even at that not many girls get injured playing golf. Looks like they could do both high school and Jr PGA tours and have the extra exposure but what do I know? Well one thing I do know, as long as my daughter is playing she will be on the HS team trying to help bring home a regional or state title.

Johnson was speaking ahead of the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run. Asked how he could make captain's picks with question marks over the eligibility of the rebels, he said: "So what I know is this: in order to play on the Ryder Cup team whether you're top 6 or a pick, you must garner Ryder Cup points through the PGA of America. In order to garner Ryder Cup points through the PGA of America you have to be a member of the PGA of America. The way that we're members of the PGA of America is through the PGA Tour. I'll let you connect the dots from there."

My neighbor's daughter plays HS golf for LCA, and also competes in approx a dozen junior events between the end/start of the school year. They're actually heading out today for a tourney somewhere this weekend. She enjoys HS because those are her friends, and you still can't discount the competition even though the best of the best may not play.

Good for her and that is the way it should be. My daughter, who is going into 8th grade, has played on summer tours the past 2 years and also plays on the HS team and will continue to do so as long as she plays. It runs into a lot of money for entry fees, travel expenses and cart rental if we don't fee like walking to follow her around but if she is fortunate enough to get a scholarship then it will be worth it.

Barbasol just announced prelim field yesterday, Brandt Snedeker probably best known, last year's runner up JT Poston is in the field at the moment, but if he goes on to win the Deere, probably will WD (I would guess), finished 2nd last week and locked up his card for next year anyway.

Lots of Euros, as expected, 6 or 8 in the top 100 on the DP Tour rankings, Yannick Paul at no. 40 is the top rated I noticed, which is better than it sounds, because a lot of top PGA players are also rated on the DP Tour, e.g., Zalatoris, McIlroy, Rahm, Lowry, Morikawa, etc.

Spieth with a very nice jab from the Pro Am in Ireland today.

Maybe he needs to focus on not getting Dairy Queened. lololol

Billy Horschel's comments? What an pile of Horschel sh*t. He's right, nobody is forcing the players to play 33 events.........but to earn a living, many of them HAVE TO. What a clown. The only PGA players speaking up are the one's making lots of money. Frauds.

If anyone wants to get taken to school one-on-one at St. Andrew’s, holla. Rajon711 on WGT. Or any other course for that matter!

but to earn a living, many of them HAVE TO.

No, they don't. It's a choice.

Again, for those that are struggling with this (as you are)......no one FORCED any player to work hard and get their tour card. There are NO GUARANTEES of any kind regarding income.....you play well, the money comes (paychecks, endorsements, etc)

The above works for all aspects of life, career, etc......work hard, you will be rewarded in one way or another.

You don't think the guys jumping ship to the LIV tour worked hard to get there? I would guess they worked every bit as hard and feel they deserve it just as much. I mean Grace has played in 2 LIV tournaments and earned 6.4 million and his best year in the PGA tour was in 2015-2016 where he earned $2,878,868 for the entire season. Sounds to me like he is being rewarded just not by the PGA tour.

Incredible field we got lined up for Barbasol. Why would losers pick Scotland over Lexington!

I was disappointed in the US contingent, Snedeker WD'ed and Poston and Grillo qualified for the Open at the John Deere. But there are 50 or so Euros, playing for a spot in the Open, have no idea who these guys are, but then again, I had not heard of Seamus Power either and a year later and he is world top 40.

It is a great community event which is probably all it is ever going to be, but the guys that show up are damn good and fun to watch. Besides Power, four players in last year's field have won PGA events since then, JJ Spaun, Luke List, JT Poston, and Hudson Swafford, plus Anibarn Lahiri was 2nd in the TPC and Mito Pereira was 3rd in the PGA, but should have won the tournament.

I'm interested to see how the course is set up this week. The first few years of the Barbasol have been so wet that it's played extremely easy. If ever there was a stretch of weather where it could be a little more firm and fast this definitely has been it but I'm worried they'll just dump more water on it and make it what it has been.

Agree, but it is expected to rain off and on Thur-Sat, so probably will be wet, but there is a drought in Cent Ky as well, so we do need the rain, tbh.

Decent field for what is still an "opposite" tourney, thanks to the strength of the Scottish. The Barbasol execs misplayed their hand by thinking this would be a better event not being the same week as the British.

Haas, Cook, Higgs are my picks to light the course up.

My bet would be on one of the Euros, they seem to be a cut above the homies in the field. Think the kid from Rutgers, Gotterup, would be a dark horse.

Playing Lex Country Club in the coming week. Anyone play it? Reviews, thoughts?

Played Dolphin Head, Bearcreek and Cupp Course in HHI.

Palmetto Hall in HHI has been acquired by Heritage. They are closing Hills first for renovation. They own Shipyard and Oyster Reef I believe. Anyone going down may want to look into an all you an play weekly pass offered by them.

The dark horse is the betting favorite.

The "Dark Horse" Gotterup is +3 after 8 holes and nearly in last place. 🤣 So much for my selection ability. As an aside, are there sick degenerate gamblers who bet on even the Barbasol tournament? There are professionals who can help . . .

The haters don’t care about the state of the game, ethics, etc. They are mad that all the best golfers won’t be herded into one pasture for their Sunday viewing pleasure. It’s that simple.

Barbasol....the cut will be 10 under at this rate. The coming rains will make it even more susceptible to darts.

Good scoring for the fans, and this field, I suppose. They should really look at a tougher course, and one that is easier for the fans to access more holes.

It is hard to get around for sure, they need shuttles for fans to back 9

Should move it to Valhalla

Don't think Valhalla and the city of Louisville would even consider hosting an off event.

Olde Stone is hosting a USGA junior event this summer, and I think it is also a hell of a course, but not sure if Bowling Green is a big enough community to muster the number of volunteers needed, I heard yesterday that they were short of volunteers at Champions, takes over 1000 volunteers to host a PGA event, or so I am told, which seems crazy to me.

Agree...schedule change would be needed.

Sad to say, but I think the initial luster of the Barbasol has quickly faded. I blame some of it on location, and how they have marketed it in Lex, and truth be told, if the event were actually in Lex, then there would be so many events you could have in conjunction w/ the tourney.

The senior event here did well until the $$ dried up and they couldn't match other locations/venues. It might do well to look at bringing that back or even an LPGA event.
