Duke factoid

People are really letting their anti-Duke bias get in the way of evaluating their team this year. I get it, Duke might be the most annoying team in college basketball. But the weak conference argument is really overblown.

Gonzaga plays in a weak conference and it's never hurt them in the tournament. They have the longest consecutive sweet 16 streak and recently got to two Final Fours and a title game.

Houston was supposed to be overrated because they played in the AAC. "Wait until they get to the Big 12 and they'll learn what a real conference looks like," everyone said. Well they just won two straight conference titles.

Our 2012 title team played two ranked games in conference, both against Florida. Our 1996 title team played one ranked team in conference.

If you're banking on Duke being overrated because of their easy competition you're going to be disappointed. Everything about them is elite and they're ranked #1 in the NET, Kenpom, and Barttorik. Advanced metrics aren't everything, but when everything is in this strong of an agreement it's impossible that they're all that wrong. Duke is elite this year and probably at minimum the second best team in the country.

Eh. You could do this with us and the Big 12 past 5 years, and I don't remember anyone arguing we were ranked too high.

If anything, the opposite. Oh, these Big 12 teams are cheating by winning ooc and then beating each other up.

Let's face it: Duke can't get wins over ranked opponents when there are no ranked opponents in their conference. If you think that's laughable, I would just point out that for decades UK was often one of only a couple ranked teams in the SEC. That did not stop us from often times dominating in the postseason.

I hate Duke as much as anyone, but that's a good team this year. I won't be surprised if they make the Final Four. Of course, I'll be ecstatic if they lose in the first weekend.

They've played weak teams but they've mainly blew them out as they should.
The ass kicking they put on Illinois was impressive.

Just one game I’d like to see Flagg get in foul trouble or foul out early. They wouldn’t know what to do I don’t think.

I agree with all this, but I do want them to keep blowing teams out. I hope they beat cheats by 40 Saturday.
I hope they avoid Clemson in their conference tourney and steam roll all the way through.
They are legit, but have struggled in close finishes against the few good teams they have played. Don’t want them to have any further close game preparation before the ncaa tourney.

This is a Duke fan. Please make a note of it. It'll come in handy in future disagreements.

Lol. I've been a UK fan since I was 6 and have a degree from UK. I grew up in upstate NY and went to UK solely because I had been a fan of the team my whole life.

This year Duke is Gonzaga.
Let's hope they end their season like every Gonzaga team (w/ a loss, usually earlier than their seeding suggests).

You certainly are a wealth of Duke information. It's almost like you are obsessed with them.
Every year people are on here talking up Gonzaga, and every year they receive a seeding based on a record against crap teams. That'll be Duke this year. They will get run out of the gym by the first SEC team they run in to.

As a Statistician, it is my job to appropriately analyze data to be able to draw conclusions, limiting bias. However, Ken's (I communicated w/ Pomeroy quite a bit about 20 years ago when I first created my Statistically based computer ranking system of all 300+ teams) analysis starts off with a flaw. He looks at "non-conference winning %", which is biased and not comparable across seasons, or even within a season across leagues. Why? Because as we all know Power 5 schools create their non-conference schedules with two types of opponents, (1) the bottom half of the mid-majors ("cupcakes") and (2) with other P5 schools. They avoid the top half of mid-majors because those neither help them much with a win (since a mid-major) and are not a guaranteed win like the cupcake schools are. And actually the 79 P5 schools could also be divided into top half & bottom half. But for simplicity sake, I will lump all P5's together. So a much better way to compare conferences within a season, or across seasons, is to compare how they did vs other P5 conference teams. I did this comparison back in mid-December and posted it on this message board. The SEC pretty much demolished the ACC (30-4) and the Big12 (I think it was something like 12-4) and the Big East (something like 9-4), but the SEC and Big10 were pretty even (I think like 15-13).

Gonzaga has never had a top 5 defense, let alone a top 10 defense, ever.
Gonzaga has also never been the 2nd best Ken-Pom team of the past 26 years.

Pretty incredible how strong the SEC conference is, let’s hope KY shows up and makes a deep run. Would love to see all 4 final 4 teams from the SEC including the CATS of course

Gonzaga has never had the NPOY, since Adam Morrison.
Duke had all that PLUS coach K in 2019. They had the greatest player in history, if the adoring ESPN could be believed. How'd that go? Flagg ain't Zion , and Sheyer ain't K.

Ukcatz12 is a good Kentucky fan and a good poster. This weak attempt at a character attack undermines your own credibility, frankly.
Yet he is in several threads right now fighting on behalf of Duke.
He might be a true blue Kentucky fan, but he's got a crush on Duke.
Congrats on achieving hitting the 811 post mark. It was a doozy

No one is saying they aren’t one of the best teams or most talented teams . It’s whether or not their schedule has prepared them for the teams they will face in the tournament. You know, the teams they have gone 2-2 against.

I’m not sure the significance of 811 posts sorry. That one flew over my head like many things do. I’m just saying he’s a good poster that’s all. No need to go for the jugular because he said something positive about a school you don’t like. Frankly, I hate Duke but you do have people who rearrange the truth a lot when it comes to them due to our hatred.

Duke is awesome and I want absolutely no part of them in the tourney.

But they’ve only had a handful of games all year where they actually had to execute down the stretch. (UK, KU, Auburn, Clemson, Wake, NCST)

They will have a game or games in the tourney where they have to execute high pressure moments. Can be really hard for younger teams especially against older battle tested teams.
