Some tidbits on an article I read about UConn and Coach Hurley. Seems to be the antithesis to CCC.

Coach Dan Hurley said it starts with the type of kid UConn recruits. Yes, they must have a lot of talent, but there also has to be an extreme passion for the game and for winning. If he's at dinner with a recruit or brings one to a practice and that player looks bored or is looking at his phone, UConn will take a hard pass, no matter the talent level.

“We’re all about ‘we’ and winning the next game and guys, you know, fulfilling their obligation to the team in terms of the role we need them to play. “When the ‘we’ season’s over, we will participate fully in the ‘me’ season with these guys in terms of draft stock and evaluating those things. But, we don’t recruit players based on promising the NBA. We recruit players based on we'll teach you how to be a man, and, and we’re going to show you how to win and succeed. And with those things, the NBA, you know, will come and get you when it’s time.”

One of our major problems is after 15 years the type of recruit that wants to be one and done is different than it used to be. Guys like Cousins and MKG were one and done but still had that drive to win and drive the program forward. The past few years we just don't have guys with that amount of passion. I think it's just the culture around these one and done type players at this point and it has made this recruiting strategy not as conducive to winning.

With guys like MKG you could put the players first and the program success would naturally follow. I don't really think you can do that anymore.

They play like it and have plenty of talent. He has to be a guy we go after hard if Cal leaves, retires, or somehow gets fired. We have to chase him relentlessly with an offer he can’t refuse. If he says no to that I’m good.

I agree with this, it seems like the days of elite recruits wanting to win in college before pursing their pro aspirations are over. Most view it as a couple month audition or practice session against better competition and to make money before leaving for the huge dollars.

It's not the players, it's Cal. You don't think guys at UCONN want to be one and done?

Lol, dude, the only people trolling UK fans are UK fans.

LMAO, Hurley is at a school with 5 NC in the last 25 years. UK has 4 in the last 65. He isn't coming to UK, nor is any other coach worth a damn. UK fans have ran that program into the ground!

Use your brain, dumbass!

@IL Wildcat can you please hurry and come save your feeble little UK fans. They're melting here!
This moron above edited this post at 3:04 AM. Who stays up that late unless they're surfing porn in grammy's basement?

He goes after the same players UK does. So does every major program. It's OK to just hate., You don't have to look for reasons to justify your hate. Just wallow in it.

Keep editing your moronic posts. Even if you wrote your comments in crayon, no one would care. You're a waste.

Garbage level trash.
Imagine being such an incel that you have nothing better to do than insult people you will never meet on their own message board.

I think most coaches recruit or try to recruit those kinds of kids.

I don't think Cal intentionally recruits "me season" players and just lets them me ball it up. If that were the case Boogie and AD would've faced the basket, and a lot of guys he's gotten here would have gone elsewhere to be a lot bigger stars as opposed to role players.

Cal has a roster of top tier NBA players, some all-stars, who sacrificed run and stats here.

The issue with Cal has never been type of player. The issue with Cal, at least since the last run at it with the Platoon, is what are his goals? What is he interested in?

The one gripe I have with Cal recruiting post platoon and think has been an issue more than lackadaisical ball hogs, is he started dabbling in projects. He got a little too cute like a lot of NBA franchises and started taking on kids who just weren't ready. The league can get away with it because they can keep them overseas if they're foreign talent, they can D-league them, or they can sign some seasoned vets to help bring them along.

College, naturally by design and structure, doesn't have the luxury of time to develop kids. Cal, specifically, in his model of about 2 years and done has to play kids. Also, when Cal plays a project, that project is most likely surrounded by 18–19-year-olds who really aren't in a position to help with the development.

Hire him now. What a refreshing take.

Most, if not all, one and dones will get to the league no matter where they attend school. Cal has accomplished little by "getting them there". If he truly was kids only, he would work tirelessly to get the borderline kids a contract.

You know when Z makes the All-Star team Cal will whip it out and lay it on the table as if he made that happen singlehandedly.

I agree and the NIL impact is making it worse.

The will to win above all else starts with the coach. A good coach can convince any entitled one and done wanna be to desire winning.

Cal’s issue is that he sets the tone immediately with the “player first” mantra. There is no “winning first” mentioned. Winning to Cal is changing lives by putting kids in the league.

I certainly have ZERO complaints to anything Coach Hurley said above

Hurley would be the first person contacted if/when Calipari leaves. He has a winning attitude and a strong work ethic on both sides of the ball. Then, you have the added pedigree of winning at the highest level.

He’s got to be top priority, in my book.

Wish the nba would change their rule so kids could go straight from HS!

Reminds me of the old saying, at times contributed to Knight, that everyone has the will to win but not everyone has the will to prepare to win. This is the difference between younger Cal and post Social Security Cal. He really wants to win but the will to prepare has passed him by.

I'll be SHOCKED if he comes here. UCONN is an elite program over the last 25 years. He has everything he needs to win there. Kentucky doesn't give him more resources or a better platform.

We can throw all the money in the world at him, I'm guessing UCONN will find a way to pay him whatever it takes. He'll use us to leverage them into getting whatever money he wants.

Maybe, but as others have said UCONN has operated at a deficit in the AD. Maybe it’s not as easy for them to come up with extra money to double his salary. You won’t know until you try. Like I said we do have SEC money so I do believe that we can offer a couple things plus the prestigious job. If we make him a Calipari offer or better and he turns it down then so be it. He has to be seriously considered though IMO.

THIS is why he should be the first call. Along with his title last year.

If we wanted Hurley I firmly believe we could get him. He could have a long run at Kentucky and build a legacy as greatest ever. I don't think that's possible at UCONN.

As it should be imo

Why do you think it's not possible at UCONN? UCONN as a program has 5 titles in the last 25 years.

Hurley has completed 5 seasons as the UCNONN HC. In the 1st 5 seasons, he won a national championship. In year 6, he now has the best team in the country again.

I don't think he needs to move anywhere to win. He's demonstrated he can do it. More importantly, I certainly don't think he believes that.

UCONN has had a ton of "luck" factored into those championships. That's not sustainable. We could argue about it all day but it'd do no good. If he stayed there 25 years he'd be lucky to win 2 more. Much easier to build a dynasty type career at UK than at UCONN.
