Program Issues That'll Shake Out Soon

1. The transfer portal opens in 2 weeks. You can bet multiple UK players will enter and the staff will target replacements. I expect this to be the most active portal for UK yet by far.

2. Staff changes will absolutely occur this year. How many? Who knows but there will be turnover and perhaps a significant amount.

3. Will Iowa open? I think it's 50/50 and it should be known after the B1G championship game. Whether Iowa will target Stoops is anyone's guess, but it's definitely possible. If it opens and they target Stoops, buckle up especially if the timing doesn't work out and Sumrall, the most obvious hire for Mitch, has already taken another job. Will one of the other open jobs be attractive to Stoops? Michigan State perhaps?

4. Coen questions. Is he healthy? Will he still be here? Is he actually any good? No one really knows what happened that landed him in the hospital, but he's not coached another game from the field since that happened. That's a complete departure from his history. Will he take a HC job somewhere? If he does, Stoops is in offensive limbo yet again, which is exactly where he's been for the majority of his tenure. Brown-Dawson-Gran-Coen-Scangerello-Coen. It's all been consistently inconsistent. Even when the team has won, the offense has been mostly one-dimensional.

5. Can they attract another good portal QB? Leary's ineffectiveness will be used against them.

6. Can they attract a good portal RB? Ray's apparent unhappiness will be used against them.

Upset alert threads

When a highly ranked blue blood like North Carolina or Kansas or Duke or Auburn, is down to an underdog at halftime or at any time, please follow these rules.

Don't say North Carolina is down by 15 with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
Instead, say interesting game between North Carolina and North Texas State. Also, it helps if you say North Carolina is the greatest program ever and there's no way they can lose this game. North Texas State has no chance.

As soon as you post that North Carolina is down 15 points, karma kicks in and will bite you in the butt, and it will succeed.

I have no authority and I'm just making a suggestion, but I've been around long enough that I've seen games won not by coaching, but by some stupid fan posting that Duke was in trouble on a message board.

Thank you.

Joe Lunardi’s math last night

I didn’t see this mentioned, but Lunardi did a segment last night during the game on why Cal was successful as a tournament coach.

I thought it was a great example of how you can make data lie or at least tell half truths.

He used a metric of expected tournament wins based on seed line, and pointed out that Cal has done better in that area than Tubby or Rick did. Cal had a ratio of 1.1 win for every expected win.

Lunardi was definitely using the opportunity to take shots at our fan base.

Ok, so here’s the lie. The problem, for the most part, hasn’t been Cal underperforming his seed line. The problem has been UK being seeded too low because Cal underperformed during the season.

A 4 seed who makes the Elite Eight has exceeded expectations. A 1 seed who makes the Final Four has only met expectations.

My contention is that Cal has had too many teams who should have been in position to get that 1 seed. But a dropped game (or 2 or 3) season after season has us up against it come March.

We haven’t gotten a 1 seed since 2015. Not entirely coincidentally, that was our last Final Four.

We caught a little fool’s gold with those deep runs in ‘11 and ‘14 as a 4 and 8 seed, respectively. Those were a lot of fun, but they were the exception that proves the rule.

Glad to see us gut it out last night. The Kansas loss is an issue. A home loss to St. Joe’s could have been a problem 4 months from now.

Sheppard is the reason UK won this game

I'm not here to complain about his lack of playing time here or moan and groan, but this is what I will say. He made one bone headed play when he tried to make a miraculous pass and turned it over. Other than that, he made play after play, for others and on defense, and at crunch time in OT, he won the game. I know the team needs DJ and Edwards to increase their confidence and play well, but when the game is on the line, he's got to be in.

I'm glad to see DJ make some plays and Edwards make some shots, but I want Sheppard on the floor most of the game. He sat too much at the end of regulation for me. That's my 2 cents. Love them all! Go Big Blue! 😀

Some insane stats through five games

  • Six players averaging double figures
  • Four players averaging 3 or more assists(Lead by DIlly at 4.6)
  • Averaging more steals than turnovers (10 to 8)
  • Four players shooting 40% or better from three
  • Reeves missed 13 threes in a game and is still shooting 40% from three
  • Reed (blessed be his holy name) is averaging 3.4 steals (as was foretold by the prophet Rupptus Rafterus)

A name to watch for the future -- Jon Sumrall

I lost my password awhile back and never took time to get another one so I have alot of catchup up to do- BUT Jon is a beloved ex player who is doing a very nice job at Troy. I think Stoops has ran his course here and we have seen the best he has. VERY thankful to him, but really hoping hes on his way out in the neat year or two. Jon is one to keep an eye on.

I have to fess up about Reed Sheppard

I first started to hear about him a couple of years ago. I loved his Dad when he played and thought it will be tough on the kid living up to that. Then about his JR year people were saying he was a legit prospect. He did well in AAU and was having much praise heeped on him. But to be honest, I thought he was getting pub because of his last name. Then in-state folks started beating the drum for Cal to sign him. I had not seen him play but I assumed he was a good HS player but i questioned the competiton he played against. So when we signed him I was happy because he was a legacy and an in-state kid. But I still wondered if Cal had just bowed to pressure and hoped he would not be in over his head.
I remember thinking how bad it would be for him to come here where his Dad (and Mom) were stars and not be good enough to cut it.
I have never been so glad to have been proven wrong about anything in my life.
He has far exceeded my expectations and is a pleasure to watch. I salute you young man and am looking forward to watching you as the season goes on.
Any body else have feelings like this going in to it ?
