BingoI think it was very possible. After he left look how quickly they sank under Ron Jirsa. Since Tubby left Georgia, they've won exactly one NCAA tournament game since and that was with Jim Harrick at the helm who didnt exactly recruit on the up and up.
Admit it you hate Tubby he’s well respected by the basketball world Billy G was a dirtbag andWrong. I think he's a nice guy. He seems like a good trustworthy average worker for any business.
On the other side, he's the most overrated coach in college history. You'd think he won every place he went by reading some of the comments. Bottom line....he sucks as a coach. You cant fail at that many schools and have that many poor seasons and say he's good. Kentucky made him and he'll ride that coattail until he dies. He should be thanking Pitino every Christmas.
As for cherry picking stats LOL..... what stats? He sucks everywhere and he still sucks at High Point. How can you be a solid coach and still blow at High Point? I bet even Gillispie would win there with a bottle glued in his hand.
Thanks for proving my point.Wrong. I think he's a nice guy. He seems like a good trustworthy average worker for any business.

Yes, Billy G was shit. In terms of basketball, not much difference between his first two years and Tubby’s last two years. Tubby lost 25 games in 06/07 seasons, Billy lost 27 in 08/09 seasons.Admit it you hate Tubby he’s well respected by the basketball world Billy G was a dirtbag and
Couldn’t carry Tubby’s jock
First season after Tubby you got to watch UK lose to Gardner Webb and San Diego on the way to an 11 seed in the tournament and first round loss to Marquette. The following year was an enjoyable NIT run foiled by Notre Dame.At times I wonder how many NIT and CBI Championships we cost ourselves by forcing Tubby to take the Minnesota job.
1998 was my favorite run. But this is a bit misleading considering Shep was redshirted in 1997, Anderson was hurt and I think Edwards was still hurt and only played 6 minutes. We couldn’t stay in front of their guards (one an NBA elite PG) and we lost in OT with them shooting 24 more free throws.Tubby won a national title with the same players that Pitino couldn't.
Yeah, I know. I literally started my post saying Billy was shit. Tubby sure as hell didn’t leave Billy with anything to work with though. We were god awful. Billy made it even worse.First season after Tubby you got to watch UK lose to Gardner Webb and San Diego on the way to an 11 seed in the tournament and first round loss to Marquette. So you are an expert on Tubby’s personal thoughts hmmm Get A LifeYes, Billy G was shit. In terms of basketball, not much difference between his first two years and Tubby’s last two years. Tubby lost 25 games in 06/07 seasons, Billy lost 27 in 08/09 seasons.
Don’t really have any issue with Tubby as a person but you seem to forget he was plotting an exit in the middle of the season when he contacted Minnesota in December of 2006.
Wow he’s living rent free in your small mindThanks for proving my point.
Whiny boy, aren’t we?Wow he’s living rent free in your small mind
Are you on Mommas laptop?Whiny boy, aren’t we?
I think tubby hate ate his mind. Yours too probably.
Weird..there was a birthday thread on here that you got locked. An effing birthday thread. You and the usual suspects got it locked.I dont know what deep seeded issues you have with race, but nobody brought up skin color except you. Constantly.
Maybe you were mistreated due to your skin, which is unfortunate, but to continually bring up racism as a reason some think Tubby sucks is ridiculous. Were Minnesota, Texas Tech, and Memphis fans all racist as well? I know your a big fan of Tubby, and now after reading your racial motivated responses im thinking you'd have a different response if he was white? Its a shame people like yourself constantly use race as an excuse why some are fired....get over it already.
You make some fair points here. Having said that though, Tubby left Billy with quite a bit to work with. Meeks had a healthy junior season and the team went to the NIT. I would guarantee had Tubby been the coach they would have made the NCAA Tournament and possibly went on to a Final Four.Yeah, I know. I literally started my post saying Billy was shit. Tubby sure as hell didn’t leave Billy with anything to work with though. We were god awful. Billy made it even worse.
That 2007-2008 team had Meeks injured for all but 11 games. Patterson, Billy’s signing, went down and we had a roster of Crawford, Bradley, Porter, Harris, Stevenson and an injured Jasper.
This program was super close to becoming Indiana-like or something like Nebraska football with four years of Tubby and Billy. Recruiting was atrocious. We went to the dumps after the 2004-2005 season.
Tubby post Kentucky has been awful, killing any point that Kentucky was the issue and not Tubby’s recruiting and style.
I love Tubby Smith and that will never change. I always wish him the best, no matter where he's coaching. He is an honorable man and a good role model for his players. I've never questioned any of that about him.![]()

The NCAAB 2021 season is in the midst of significant upheaval brought on by the catalyzing effect of the coronavirus pandemic that turned 2020 upside down for all major sporting leagues around the …mwwire.com
But no coach does everything great I letteredI love Tubby Smith and that will never change. I always wish him the best, no matter where he's coaching. He is an honorable man and a good role model for his players. I've never questioned any of that about him.
However, what I am reading right there could have been written at every one of his stops, including Kentucky. His first season produced good results and an improvement, though he was working mostly with a previous coach's roster for the most part. After that first season, and as the previous coach's players leave, he struggles. He does some things very well, like coaching defense and teaching his players to give maximum effort. He does other things poorly, like coaching offense and recruiting.
"At High Point he's had the one bad season."You make some fair points here. Having said that though, Tubby left Billy with quite a bit to work with. Meeks had a healthy junior season and the team went to the NIT. I would guarantee had Tubby been the coach they would have made the NCAA Tournament and possibly went on to a Final Four.
Tubby did well at Minnesota considering they've never been too much at basketball. They've been to 14 total NCAA Tournaments, and 3 of those Tubby led them to. As the case with Georgia, Minnesota has won exactly one tournament game since Tubby left. I'll grant anyone this: He was fired at Minnesota but so was the guy who replaced him. Minnesota is a hard place to win at, and I'll give Tubby credit for taking the challenge. He won a title at UK and really their wasnt anywhere else to go from there.
At Texas Tech he inherited a program in shambles thanks to ironically enough, Billy G. In his last season, Texas Tech went to its first NCAA Tournament since Bob Knight's last tournament game there some 9 years before. He left the Red Raiders in great shape for Chris Beard to have some great success there before he parlayed that into the Texas job.
Tubby had winning seasons both years at Memphis, though they werent invited to the NIT or NCAA, though its not like they went 2-28 either. Memphis wanted a flashy type to try to duplicate the Calipari magic and went after Penny Hardaway. I think they personally made a mistake.
At High Point he's had the one bad season. I know this past season they had a losing record but if you check their schedule you'll see they were in almost every game meaning they are improving. I believe their leading scorer took his name out of the transfer portal to return to High Point.
We have differing definitions of awful, and that's okay. Like you, that 98 run was my favorite too. Tubby coached the team masterfully and in the process outcoached some of the better coaches the game has seen that season:
Mike Jarvis-George Washington
Norm Stewart- Missouri
Gene Keady-Purdue
Bob Knight-Indiana
Bobby Cremins-Georgia Tech
Billy Donovan-Florida
Nolan Richardson- Arkansas
Cliff Ellis-Auburn
Coach K-Duke
Mike Montgomery-Stanford
Rick Majerus-Utah.
Tubby outcoached them all in one season. Quite impressive for a guy who supposedly is garbage in the eyes of some.

You're a UK fan and you're asking this question??How many titles after 58'? Final fours?
I can see your point and agree with you on some of this, but I would also disagree somewhat. Minnesota and Texas Tech were down when he got there and he got them built back up as far as getting to the NCAA Tournament goes. I know some will mention the job Chris Beard did there, but before he got there Texas Tech wasnt much in basketball, Tubby got them back in the tournament after a 9 year absence and got the program back on solid ground after Pat Knight couldnt equal Bob's success and then the Billy Gillispie experiment blew up in their face.I love Tubby Smith and that will never change. I always wish him the best, no matter where he's coaching. He is an honorable man and a good role model for his players. I've never questioned any of that about him.

1998 was just a different roster. Got Evans. Turner and Padgett were much better and Shep was our leader.
All 5 starters on that 98 team were upperclassmen and played in the NBA. And lets not forget, they were coached years and years prior by Pitino, which is obviously a better coach. It would be interesting to put together a list of teams that won the title without having a roster full of first round draft picks. As said a long time ago, it takes experience and talent to win the title. That team had both.
Yeah they ran him off and they've not exactly done much since, same goes for Minnesota. Texas Tech hadnt made the tournament in 9 years before Tubby took them there, he left the program in much better shape than when he found it. Thats not revisionist history. You are completely rewriting history. Chris Beards success has zero to do with Tubby Smith. You might want to check the rosters and what Beard did and when.
I won’t even bother with the rest except to say I’m from Memphis and a UofM alumn. They absolutely loath him and for good reason. I can expand on this for days, from recruiting and the way he ran the program.
Everyone runs him off, and it’s not for nothing.
You sound ridiculous man. And this is coming from someone who enjoyed his first few years, some of the players, and doesn’t mind putting his jersey in the rafters.
You don’t go from Kentucky, to Minny, to TT, to high friggin point for no reason. And all of your bs doesn’t change that Smith is just not cut out for high level college basketball. Period.
Best coaches? LOL..Yeah they ran him off and they've not exactly done much since, same goes for Minnesota. Texas Tech hadnt made the tournament in 9 years before Tubby took them there, he left the program in much better shape than when he found it. Thats not revisionist history.
What sounds ridiculous to me is people getting on here to discredit one of the classiest and best coaches we will ever see.
Using the same logic in your challenged brain I guess we should give credit to Billy G for the success Cal had when he took over the program lol.Yeah they ran him off and they've not exactly done much since, same goes for Minnesota. What does spending millions have to do with doing your job. Maybe they would be better off making him a vip donor and hiring a basketball coach that actually wins games. If High Point fired Tubby, it would be pathetic on their end. Tubby has spent millions of dollars of his own money to help his alma mater. If they are a university of integrity, he will go out when he decides he is ready. I look for the Panthers to improve because Tubby has that fire in his belly he's always had to prove his haters and naysayers wrong.
I do think UK should offer the Panthers a guarantee game this upcoming season in case Tubby does decide to retire. Be a kind gesture for a man who represented UK with such class and dignity, unlike the man who he replaced and the man who replaced him.
He did leave Calipari a few good pieces to work with. So yes, he does deserve a little bit of credit. Unlike you I believe in giving credit where credit is due.Using the same logic in your challenged brain I guess we should give credit to Billy G for the success Cal had when he took over the program lol.
Just goes to show how selfless Tubby is. Donating money to his alma mater. He probably could have taken a job at a school in a better conference and for more money, but he wanted to go back to his alma mater at a discount and also help the school by donating money out of his own pocket. What does spending millions have to do with doing your job. Maybe they would be better off making him a vip donor and hiring a basketball coach that actually wins games.
What's laughable is you saying he cant even win. While I'll give you he is still building at High Point, he's won everywhere else he's been. He will have High Point in contention for the Big South Championship and the NCAA Tournament bid that comes with the tournament championship. He's always had the fire in his belly and the Panthers are about to reap the benefits of it.Best coaches? LOL..
The man cant even win at High Point, let alone all the other stops. You'd think if he was so good other programs would be begging.
He needs to be thankful that money can buy his employment. If not for his hefty donations to High Point, they wouldve fired him as well.
He did leave Calipari a few good pieces to work with. So yes, he does deserve a little bit of credit. Unlike you I believe in giving credit where credit is due.
