Negativity with Tubby starts with recruiting. Tubby had some real nice classes but, imho, he relied too much on his X's and O's and didn't take advantage of the "UK brand". For example....In 2003, we had 4 open scholarships and Tubby brought in #72, #112, #113, #317. Then there are the reports Durant would have gone to UK but we never offered....Brendan Wright was ready to commit on his UK visit but Tubby told him to take all his visits, etc.
Also, several NCAA tournament games (UConn, Maryland) where TV talking heads complimented Tubby's coaching but noted UK just doesn't have the talent of these top schools....
I don't think Pitino would have won with the 1998 team he put together, Tubby did a great job that year, (except for losing to a terrible UofL team at home), but he still won with another man's players. Tubby never went to a FF with guys he recruited. 9 years, no FF's with guys he recruited.
I think the Morris fax thing was shady...but if not, it was certainly sloppy, or lack of paying attention to the program. I think it is kind of shady Tubby was working with an agency to leave UK during the post season (tournament play) of his last year.
When Pitino went to U of L I really think Tubby failed to rise to the occasion. He let Pitino roll him and take players (Stone). Even though I am no longer a Calipari fan (I quit when we started losing players OAD who were not getting drafted or late second round...that's a B.S. way to run a program)...I will always appreciate the way Cal embarrassed Pitino routinely all the while acting like the game meant little to him. Gold, pure Gold.
