Way too early coaches on the hot seat rankings. Tubby Smith leads the list

You think Tubby is a better coach than Gillispie? Better person, yes. But on a even playing field where both teams are equal talent, I think Gillispie owns him. He's done well at every stop but UK. Tubby has left more places below par. I think Gillispie would at least have High Point competitive.
8-23 record at Texas Tech and was fired after allegations of mistreatment of players. I dont consider that doing well.

Tubby's last season at Minnesota saw them winning their first NCAA game in 16 years and then he left Texas Tech after their first NCAA Tournament in 9 years. Memphis had a 21 win season in Tubby's final season too.

Gillispie did well at UTEP and Texas A&M, I'll agree there. He also had a nice run at Ranger Junior College though if I am not mistaken they got in some trouble over using ineligible players.

Wait....you just said yesterday 9 wins by Tubby at his 3rd season at High Point was impressive.

It was. Had Covid not wiped out much of their non conference schedule it would have been a winning season. Tubby is working hard to build that program up. Gillispie has made a dumpster fire at two schools in quick time. Took him two years to take Kentucky to the NIT and getting commitments from 8th graders and then one year at Texas Tech when he ran off an entire team and also lied to people about jobs.

Sad how UK went from one of the most honorable men to one of the most reprehensible in one hire. Tubby is taking some lumps at High Point but you just wait, they will get there. You keep doubting the fire in the belly of Tubby Smith and you'll see different next March when Tubby has the Panthers in the postseason!

If If If..... Does the non-conference schedule include playing high school teams? Its High Point, its not like that conference should be difficult for a man so great. Just needs another 3-6 years to right the ship?
Gillispe > Tubby ..with equal players and drunk.

If he was greater than Tubby...why did he lead a team with Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson to the NIT then? The year prior they were an 11 seed and lost in the first round of the tournament. Tubby never finished worse than the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament while he was at UK.

You are really reaching here and I'd say you were a troll or at least I hope you are. If not you have my sympathy.

Why, cause Tubby drained the team prior to jumping ship. 2 good raw players dont equal success. The rest of the team wouldn't even see the court at EKU.

Tubbys failed at more programs than Gillispie. And once Tub get pushed out of High Point, he'll officially be the most overrated college coach of all time.

Tubby left Gillispie the following players:
Ramel Bradley
Joe Crawford
Patterson
Meeks
Derrick Jasper.

But yeah, those guys wouldnt have even came off the bench at EKU. It's obvious you fail to realize the greatness that is Orlando Tubby Smith.

Inherited a loaded NBA team and turned it into a mediocre SEC bore. And did Patterson play for Tubby?

Hahaa...you'd think if he was great he'd be wanted by other programs. If he's so great, why is he getting smashed at High Point where all the talent is equal? He's really awful.
Tubby must haunt your puny little mind I think I’ll call him and have him send you a bottle of his wine celebrating his 600th coaching victory maybe that will cheer you up

Do you think their would be any way I could get an autographed picture of him? I sent a message to the staff at High Point a while back and never got a response. I just thought I'd ask because I know you know him personally.

Well, I would give Tubby the edge over Gillispie at UK. Tubby had much more success and longevity than Billy G for many reasons, not the least of which was his ability to stay off the bottle and not attack and belittle players. I will admit, Billy Gillispie did have success elsewhere and the 2 coaches' careers are similar in total. But I guess I should say as far as their UK coaching careers are concerned, it's Tubby Smith who gets the edge.

I will say, some of what Arcadia here is saying is a bit over the top and comes across as almost a joke, such as suggesting UK wise up, fire Cal, and give the job to Saul Smith. That can't even be typed with a straight face, not even by the biggest Cal hater.

My final word. I will always support Tubby Smith even though I recognize his shortcomings. I wish him well at High Point and hope he can go out on his own terms.

I hear you, totally agree with you on Arcadia....its a parody. But I don't think its a fair comparison at UK tho. Tubby took over a program that just made back to back title appearances and had a returning team from that. Even if Tubby didnt put forth any effort what so ever, it would take years to dismantle that type of program.

BCG took over when things were at its worse. He left him Meeks, thats it.

If both started at the bottom, I have no doubt BCG would beat him. He's found success at these little programs post UK. Tubs just cant get anything going, not even at High Point.

You keep saying things like this but you keep forgetting they both wound up at Texas Tech post UK. Who lead them to the tournament and left on their own terms, and who was fired there?

I'll even grant you Tubby was fired at two schools. At the same time, he had Minnesota in the tournament on a fairly consistent basis, something they hadnt done since Clem Haskins got fired after that academic fraud scandal. Minnesota won their first tournament game in 16 years and after that, the AD made a mistake in firing him. Memphis is all about the flash and pizazz and that's not Tubby. It was a bad fit for both but having said that, Tubby won 21 games their in his last season.

If Billy gets Tarleton State to the tournament, I'll give him credit for that. Not only are they new to D-1 but the WAC has improved in bringing in Stephen F. Austin and Abliene Christian. That will make it a really good basketball mid major conference.

I can give credit when its due, but it seems like with Tubby some go out of their way to downplay his accomplishments and seem to revel in his so called failures.

What accomplishments? 1 season in his life, and it was due to Pitino. His best accomplishment was landing the UK job and hanging onto it for 10 years without 1 final four after his first season.

I think you and i have different definitions of success. Whats your excuse when Tubby goes under .500 again this year? "But he was great 25 years ago for 6 months"

@ArcadiaFan whats your excuse going to be when Tubby finishes under .500 again at High Point?
You've proven you doubt the fire in the belly of Tubby Smith. You'll see this upcoming season. I think High Point has a great chance of winning the Big South as Winthrop's had a coaching change and have lost a few players to transfer.

We do have different definitions of success, and yours is wrong. UK was lucky to have Tubby Smith.

LOL....High Point lost there best player and he transferred...was sick of losing. But they'll be better without him?

Lets make a bet. If Tubby finishes under .500 you delete your account. If he finishes above, I'll delete mine. Deal?

Actually, he took his name out of the transfer portal and is coming back next season.

You have yourself a deal.

How could that reporter say "disappointing season" for high point. Theyre right where they wanna be.

Deal.

Didnt think I'd see the day you and I would be in agreement of something. Some of these reporters certainly dont have the honesty and integrity of Tubby Smith, that's for sure!

This dude is so obsessed with Tubby he keeps up with the High Point basketball roster just to hate. That's the level of pathetic we're dealing with here.

Someone actually posted the news that the star was leaving in this thread. Similar to you reading my posts.

That's just ridiculous. In Gillespie's first year, he had Bradley, Crawford, Meeks, Stevenson, Jasper, and Harris. He added Patterson and Legion. Not great, but Meeks was the 4th leading scorer on the 07/08 team.

Just comparing their final two years at UK, Tubby was better with two NCAA tournament 2nd round losses. Certainly, not good enough for UK, but better than a 1st round NCAA loss and an NIT loss.

You're welcome. I can relieve some stress or make someone laugh a little with a post, I'm happy. We all have stress/sadness in our lives so if a comment by me can help by that I feel like I've done something good.

Hope the stress subsides soon!

Tubby took over a team coming from back to back title appearances. BCG took over a team that was garbage. Both failed, but if all players were exactly equal, BCG beats Tubby. Just look at their records post-UK.....BCG has actually done something. Tubby has been chased off from everywhere humanly possible, and the only reason High Point hasn't fired him is due to Tubby's substantial donations to the university. Tubby's hire at UK was the best thing to ever happen to him. UNC and Duke wouldve fired him much sooner.
