Texas Tech's season on the hardwood might have been a struggle, but help is on the way.

According to 247Sports.com, the Red Raiders picked up a commitment from Cloud County Community College (Kan.) point guard Devon Thomas, who feels he can excel right away under head coach Tubby Smith.

Thomas is ranked as the No. 4 junior college point guard in the country. He picked Texas Tech over offers from Creighton, Georgia State, Towson and others.

pretty good catch. he probably had to beat out luvall for him

There are a lot of 3 stars that have been a huge success, but what is telling is who Tubby beat out to get him.....Ga.St, Creighton, and somebody else and he's a JUCO.

No surprise though. Tubby couldn't recruit here, why would he be able to recruit anywhere else.

Sure wish he'd had a good three-star player to take the last shot when we got eliminated during Bobby Perry and Thomas last game. Tubby said he chose Thomas because no nobody thought he'd be the one who would take the it and no Big Blue fan thought so either. If either of them were three-star you sure couldn't tell it. The shot was about as close as the last one by the ND players shot from the corner. Air ball, air ball!

wait...Tubby is STILL coaching? That's more shocking than him stealing a PG from the mighty Creighton bluejays.

Pitino's going to be pissed! Trying to ruin his recruiting in the first week......

Is next season Tubbys last? He's finished dead last both years with no hope at all. Does the AD fire him or just keep him on for charity reasons?

Last I looked, Tubby Smith won a national title at Kentucky. Maybe some of you pathetic, ignorant clods should show some respect.

He didnt win chit. Pitino won it for him. If he won it, how come he never sniffed another? Just a coincidence that he happened to roll through everyone his first year?

If not for Tubby's hire, we may have won more than 1.....ever think of that? I mean, he kinda took over when we were the Cavs of today. By the way---hows Tubs done since his departure?

SMH. Sad, very sad.

Yeah we agree 3 star point guards suck. They have no chance of ever playing in the nba or considered map candidates. Why bother recruiting them.

Here's the thing I don't understand why the infatuation or the disliking of tubby smith. He's a good coach but a great person. I know when he coached Georgia he beat us a few times. He came here and won a title. Yes, you can say with pitinos players but he still coached them to number 7. The game changed faster than tubby could keep up with and things changed. Unfortunately, tubby didn't keep up with the times. You could make an argument that 2003-2005 those teams injury and small bad luck aside we could of made atleast the final 4. All I'm saying is let the ghost of tubby smith rest in peace. There's no denying he was a good coach he just couldn't keep up with the times and expectations we as fans demand year after year.

He's a great person alright....great enough to take a paycheck from UK with no desire to do the work required to get Kentucky caliber players to Lexington...great enough to work a deal to get out of town while still under contract...

great person my foot...

I advocated long and hard for Tubby's departure from UK, but I certainly take no pleasure in his subsequent misfortunes in coaching. I'd really like to see him do well and make it back to the tourney. Why would anyone hold a grudge?

Define GOOD COACH.
If good coach means "Taking over a power house and turning into an irrelevant trailer" then yes, he is a good coach.
I honestly see no signs of him being a GOOD coach. If not for UK, where would he have been? He wasnt that good prior to UK, and he's been an absolute joke since. You would think a GOOD coach could survive after leaving UK, nope, he's failed miserably. MISERABLY. The media feels so bad for him they dont even mention his continued flops. Good coach? No way.

I just don't understand. Are some of you still trying to be vindicated in wanting him gone? Is there any doubt that his time here was up before he actually left and that there is literally no one better for the job than John Calipari? Who would even attempt to debate that at this point? It's been clear for years.

So what gives? Holy moly a coach who had lost his edge a decade ago isn't tearing it up at a school that's been a complete dumpster fire in basketball? No kidding? There's a reason Texas Tech is Texas Tech, and there's a reason Tubby Smith coaches there.

So what point are you trying to prove? We'd all laugh at someone for starting a thread bragging that they knew John Wall would be really good, and this is more than twice as old as that revelation. It makes us look petty. Him succeeding marginally elsewhere a decade after leaving isn't threatening us in any way or making it look like we shouldn't have wanted him gone.

Sometimes I wonder the age of the "hardened tubby defender" and if they were fans or even alive back then. Tubby should get a jersey imo and adds to our legacy (his tenure was not rosy however). But to stand up and defend him like he actually did what the job requires the last 5 years is a complete lie. But hey, if these people were actually fans at that time, they know that already. I've been around long enough to know the biggest tubby defenders have either

A: agenda. Race related.
B: just a contrarian

As time goes on, and another 50 guys sit in the head coaching throne of UK, Tubby will fall lower and lower on the all time greats list. Its not bashing the man. It's the truth. And for the record, I always liked tubby, until he cut and ran, didn't tell the team or his staff, and ended up taking the bank with him. For a man that cited his "family(staff)" as a reason he was going to leave(pressure to get new staff), he sure didn't let them in on it, OR hire them at Minnesota did he?

Most people that scream "BUT HES A GOOD MAN!!" Dont even know him and most haven't met him. It's hilarious watching his little small minority of defenders evade his last 5 years and where the program was headed and instead cite his personal behavior and attitude. They have no argument really. That's why they take it there. Now he's showing how mediocre of a coach he actually is,(being nice.)so they have to resort to the "good man" card which is ridiculous. Cals a good man, but guess what? He puts the program first and does his damn job.

Some fans think every coach can be just like Cal. When Cal retires/leaves is when we will see our true fans.

Seemed like op was just making a little joke, and most of the other posters were going along with it.

Sorry, but a "true fan" does not support coaching mediocrity. I am and have always been a "true fan" -- even when I argued for the ouster of Tubby Smith. What you suggest is blind loyalty to a coach. I'm blindly loyal to the program.

Tubby won a title and deserves credit for that. He is a championship-winning coach, and that alone puts him in the pantheon of great coaches.

HOWEVER....

I found him to be extremely overrated as a bench coach, and a sub-par leader of this program. They are two very different skills:

One amounts to gameplanning, adjusting, substitution patterns, preparedness and reaction.

The other amounts to recruiting, discipline, promoting the program, handling the media, marketing, decision making, scheduling with the AD, etc.

He really was not good at either, although the 1998 and 2003 team he struck gold with. I found the 2004 team to be very overrated, and the 2005 team to be mishandled. It then spiraled out of control to where they were starting Dwight Perry instead of Bobby Perry in an NCAA tournament game. That moment defines the disorganization and apathetic approach that was his downfall.

Gonzo kind of nailed it. Look around at our former coaches
Exhibit A- Rick pitino- a shot away from winning back to back titles oh and taking a bunch of nobody's with Jamal mashburn to a final four. I guess that's why they are called "the unforgettables" how many Rick pitino appreciation threads have ever been posted here?

Exhibit B- tubby smith won the title in 1998 and we all know because it's constantly said on here "you can't just roll the ball out there" obviously, we all know what happened in 2003. In 2005 we all were one shot away from a final four(I still hate Michigan state for that) and you could throw in 99 as well when we made it to the elites 8. The game changed and tubby didn't plain and simple but he still could coach. Another coach that we have disowned because we are in a different era. Oh and some guy named John calipari came along and has changed the game and has spoiled us. We will never have a coach like cal again he's in a whole different league. What does gary Williams and tubby have in common? Each has one title and williams made a whopping two final fours. 2001, 2002. He's also a hall of fame coach.

Exhibit C. Former cats that have become coaches. Obviously pelphery hasn't made it as a head coach but he's joined at the hip with Eddie Munster who we all dislike as well. Travis ford is the last guy. He may not make it much longer as the head coach at Oklahoma state but he has had some success recruiting and coaching as well. Fords rep apparently is he's a non alcoholic BCG. If he were in the sec he would be crucified as public enemy number two behind pitino.

What would you think of cal if he left and for example went to coach Indiana would you appreciate what cal did while he was here, or just throw him to the wolves since he had joined the bad guys? coach cal came up short in 2011 and 2014 (96 umass, 2008 Memphis) teams that he coached. Does that make him a bad coach or unworthy of respect especially what he's done while he's coaching at UK?
