Time to say on Edwards

I'll tell you this.. Edwards is not getting drafted if the NBA draft was tomorrow. If he did, it would be SOLELY because some contending team would say "screw it, why not?" with the 52nd pick or something.

If his play doesn't DRASTICALLY improve, he's either going to be back for next year, or he'll transfer.

The NBA is not an option for him right now.
Justin Edwards does exactly 0 things at an NBA level currently.

0.

No, for the 1,000th time and I'm sure they'll be 1,000 more, Edwards needs to keep playing, and hopefully have a lightbulb go off and become a great contributor to this team. He's not playing big minutes when he's struggling and not hurting the team at all, just not contributing at all either. Cal is doing the absolute right thing and not giving up on him and just parking him on the bench, that doesn't help anyone.
His bad play is what gave MSU life and let them go on that quick run to get it to 6 at the start of the 2nd half. He needs to have his minutes cut more and I'm finally on board with Cal not starting him. Maybe that will finally light a fire. But, what we're doing now with him is not working and could have cost us the game tonight if Cal kept him in.

He's gone. Klutch is representing him. They'll either call in a favor like for CL or they'll ''advise'' him to transfer. Like they did to Chris Livingston last year. Before Cal convinced him to stay.

Good, quite honestly. I'm not sure even a 2nd year will fix him.

And Klutch can deal with another failed prospect as Edwards would go undrafted and then maybe get stuck bouncing around rust belt cities playing for the Toledo Rockets or some shit.

He's this year's Wheeler. Jerk fans are going to pick on him unmerciffully when Cal is the real problem.
It’s not picking on anyone to point out a starter who clearly shouldn’t. Those first five of both half’s have been killers for cal come tournament in the past. You don’t want your teams playing from behind.

I think the fans are mad at cal but know he won't change.
Go look at minutes from the first five or so games of the year vs. minutes now. Things have absolutely changed. Edwards has seen his minutes get cut significantly. When Thiero returns they'll probably get cut even more. Edwards is only averaging around 18 minutes a game over the last eight games. Sheppard is averaging 26 and has played 33 and 30 the last two games.

I think some of us just said people need to be patient and see how the rotation settled out and see how players progressed as the year went on. The way this board talks about Edwards you'd think he was getting 35 minutes a game. He needs to play some, if for no other reason then to give guys a rest. We'll see how minutes and the starting lineup look when Thiero returns, but I struggle to see how Edwards is really getting minutes at the expense of other guys right now.

Are you able to cite specific examples of this in ncaa?

In Wheeler's defense, he was limited by his size, and he also wasn't a consensus top3 recruit either. I DO think Wheeler got a lot of undeserved heat. Edwards is a different story. And Cal isn't the problem, aside from giving him minutes. Shep doesn't seem to have a problem playing for Cal and succeeding. Edwards' problem, is Edward's problem.
Most disappointing freshman, not only at UK, but in the entire country!
You know, I compared him to Skal and BJ. But Skal was played out of position, and BJ was the unfortunate bag-holder on an all around bad team. Edwards might be the worst given his ranking.

Yeah, it does seem little by little Cal has no option other than to reduce his minutes. It seems he understands it. But it's taking him a while to get there, and it cost us the game against TAM. And if other players didn't have solid games tonight? Edward's 2 points was the type of performance tonight that would also cause a loss.

He needs to move to the 2nd unit. It's college's way of sending a player to their G-League affiliate to work on things, while the actual team focuses on winning.

I don't care when he logs his min, but his snail paced improvement is not justifying the total min he's playing. We all know why. We're used to it. We just have to swallow it. Players first.
He played 16 minutes. About exactly the amount he deserves. That’s about what he’s been playing. I think Cal is doing what he needs to with him. When Adou returns it will be even less.

Yep, agreed. I posted that before we saw how little second half minutes he was going to get. I can live with 10-12 when Thiero comes back. But we know that isn't happening. Cal was experimenting with the bigs tonight. Edwards will get his start and reg min next time.

But I agree with Know1. We shouldn't take this out on Edwards.

I hate how this board talks about Edwards.
It’s unfortunate but it’s not really about Edwards. I’m sure there have been some personal shots at the kid that are uncalled for but most I’m seeing is just saying he’s not playing well enough to get the minutes he is. And he’s not so the knock is on cal for continuing to start him and play him extended minutes. Tonight he only played 16 minutes but with how he’s playing it’s 16 minutes too much. I really like him as a person and have been pulling for him but for whatever reason it’s just not there.

And, to his credit, I did still see him cheering on the bench after he got pulled in the second half. I think he's a good kid and I'm pulling for him like crazy but I also want what's best for the team and if that means even fewer minutes for him moving forward, I'm fine with that.

Edwards is one of those guys if he stays 2-3 years he can reach his potential. He needs some polishing.
Excuse me where is he going? What potential is there for an NBA team to pick him with a first round pick? He really needs to return to UK next year and improve his overall strength and mental health . IMO
I hope this kid listens and doesn’t become a number that gets drafted and only makes it a year or two before being cut and heading overseas.
I hope he has a break out game, he isn’t selfish, so let’s hope he can put it all together in a game and take us to the next level

It also cost us against UNCW.

Edwards is a good kid. You can see him cheering on the team. He’s having a hard time finding his niche, but we need him to improve and be solid by the end of the year. Might even be better for him to come off the bench once he sees the flow of the game. Either way, I’m rooting for him.

Some players actually play better coming in off the bench. It’s worth a shot.

He can't even dribble with his right hand. And doesn't have hops. Today he had one finger-roll that practically died in his left hand and barely even made it to the rim. And he has ZERO motor or willingness to play defense or get physical.

Good points on both counts! 🙂

To be fair, Wagner had two of the three turnovers and Cal pulled him too.

Cal actually went with Ugo and Bradshaw a lot together in the 2nd half after he pulled Edwards. I do NOT want to see that moving forward. But I also don't want to see Edwards getting major minutes. Just go small ball with Tre at the 5 if we have to.
I know what you’re saying. But Tre has been playing too many minutes anyway . When Tre needs a break I’d like to see Edwards at the 4 . That’s where his minutes need to come from imo.

I had felt ok (though not great) about bringing Sheppard and Dilly off the bench for a “spark.” And don’t get me wrong, I’m not writing Edwards off forever. But for all intents and purposes, they’re basically starting off 4-on-5. I get trying to build his confidence but in the meantime, we’ve got a kid on the Wooden award watchlist on the bench and our seed is dropping with every loss.

Did you see his stat line for this game, he may not be hurting us,although if you watched the beginning of the second half Im not so sure, but he sure as hell aint helping us
