The Ukraine war. (Yes, we'll mind our manners)

If we had not armed the Ukrainians and China/Iran et al hadn’t supplied the Russians they might be fighting with sticks by now.

I don’t think so. This was always going to be a slog. That’s just how war on that terrain goes.
Yeah.

Look at Bakhmut.

A city the size of Bowling Green. And there are estimates of 30/50 thousand Russian casualties in that sector since last August.

What would have (or will) happen if Russian forces enter Odessa, Kiev or Kviv, cities more like Chicago than like Bowling Green?

For Russia either to take the South, with Odessa in the way, to complete their land bridge, or to take and hold all of Ukraine, will take far more than 500K troops.

??? Don't they already have a complete land bridge to Crimea around the Sea of Azov?

I'm talking about their apparent desire to further it, to the Moldovan border and "Transnistria." This would require a push through Odessa, which they tried and failed to achieve early in the war.

Putin has a shortage of manpower and a shortage of ammunition. Maybe holding on to Bakhmut was a good strategy by Ukraine.

That was always the plan. People in this thread making smart-ass remarks about ''WHATS SO IMPORTANT BOUT BAKHMUT" are misguided. Ukraine's holding onto bahkmut to make it into a meatgrinder to bleed the Russian military dry. That way even if they do lose the city. Russia will be far weaker when they try to advance further into Ukraine. Wagner's top leader fell right into the trap. He thinks he's meat grinding. No son, Ukraine is grinding you.

Exactly. Expect by May or June, Wagner will be depleted of most of it’s manpower/ammo in that town. Hills to the west of Bakhmut give UAF an advantageous artillery position.

March Madness and I still can’t bet on a sports game. Pass the damn sports betting bill, KY Senate!

Wagner is building recruitment centers across Russia. They're also in Russian high schools as guest speakers recruiting kids as young as 15. They handed out a survey and the questions were asking for their numbers and parents phones numbers. Idk if you've saw the pic of the dead Wagner fighters but its grisly. They were probably stacked 50 to 60 men deep. Theyre just about done.

I’ve seen estimates ranging from a 4-1 kill ratio, all the way to 7-1 in Bakhmut, favoring Ukraine.

It is hard to imagine a more favorable terrain to wear down the aggressor.

Running men toward dug in defenders will tend to favor the defenders, as Grant finally learned in Virginia at Cold Harbor. And that was before plentiful machine guns, and semi-automatic assault rifles.

If anyone is still thinking Putin can overtake the whole damn country, they are deluded: Bakhmut = Bowling Green. Cities like Kiev are massive in comparison, and will have had a year+ to arm their populace and military. Odessa has miles and miles of underground chambers—catacombs—dating back centuries. Hell, the Russian push to Odessa was smashed at Mickolaev, a city a fraction of the size of Odessa. The approach to Odessa would likely entail at least ten major crossings of a river that looks like it was designed to snake repeatedly north, then south to prevent a land attack from the East.

The Institute of Warfare has suggested Putin allowed Wagner to be chewed up, to reduce the influence of its leader, Putin’s former chef. I doubt either man had much choice, as they persist in pursuing offensive action which favors the defender by at least 3-1 in casualties.

Ukrainian troops have told of being “sent to death” in Bakhmut – the small eastern city at the centre of Russia’s ever-intensifying winter campaign.

Amid reports of ”heavy losses” within Moscow’s ranks, Kyiv forces have spoken of their own desperate fight for survival against Russia’s “infinite” stocks of artillery and personnel.

“When they drive us to Bakhmut, I already know I’m being sent to death,” one Ukrainian soldier told The Kyiv Independentduring a short stay in nearby Kramatorsk, some 25km west of the front line.

“(The Russians) keep firing at us, but we don’t have artillery – so we have nothing to attack them back with,” said Volodymyr, whose surname was withheld to protect his identity. “I don’t know if I will return or not. We are just getting killed.”

Russia’s next civil war has already begun

One of the bloodiest battles in modern European history is taking place in Bakhmut, with reports of more than 1,000 soldiers dying in a single day. But more significantly for the Kremlin, it may also be the site of an extraordinary Russian civil war, playing out on Ukrainian soil between different factions. At the heart of it are two of the most significant parts of the Kremlin’s war machine: the Wagner Group and the Russian ministry of defence.

Their confrontation has been eight months in the making. For while his mercenaries have been at the forefront of the campaign to take Bakhmut, Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin has been waging a political battle of his own, to gain influence in the Kremlin. He seemingly believes he can use sheer military might in Ukraine – with the help of some 50,000 men – to prove himself as a Russian leader. Some think his ultimate goal is to usurp the Russian ministry of defence. Perhaps he wishes to bring all Russian forces under his personal command.

Since May last year, Prigozhin has been striking a public contrast with the Russian army’s humiliation on the battlefield. He openly brags about his own successes, while issuing damning public criticism of Russia’s top brass. He frequently alleges incompetence and even betrayal by Putin’s senior officials. In February, he went as far as to accuse Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu of treason for withholding ammunition from his troops.

As one might expect, the reaction from the ministry of defence has been unforgiving. A new report from the Institute for the Study of War says that Russian generals could be using the Bakhmut death trap as an opportunity “to deliberately expend both elite and convict Wagner forces… in an effort to weaken Prigozhin and derail his ambitions for greater influence over the Kremlin”.

In other words, they could be holding back Russian forces and depriving Wagner of ammunition in order to inflict maximum attrition on Prigozhin’s mercenaries. This would be an astonishingly self-interested strategy in the midst of an existential battle for the Russian regime and could be slowing down the advance on Bakhmut. It would mean that the Russian ministry of defence is now prioritising domestic power struggles over the invasion.

We have certain victory at hand in Ukraine so the nutcase wing of the Republican Party needs to stop undercutting us and get on board with this great victory. Putin will be crushed. China will be rebuffed. In one bold move the United States smashes its two biggest global adversaries.

Wow. Month or two familiarization training on MiG-29s and LTC Hampton (retired) should be good to go. Game over if he gets his hands on an F-16.

Yeah, getting Migs is not enough. Ukraine needs pilots, according to a number of reports. So, we will see non-Ukraines in the battle. This was predicted when the weaponry being provided required these jets for deployment.

When an American is captured, will we see the Brittany Griner press or something less.

Major explosion? Check out the debris. Wow.

Meanwhile, Poland cracking down on Russian spies.

Money quote:

Some cameras were near the small regional Rzeszow-Jasionka airport, which has been converted into an international logistics hub supplying military and humanitarian supplies to Ukraine, the radio report said.
Military and cargo aircraft from the US and across Europe regularly fly in and out of the airport - where American troops can be seen beside their Humvees - to deliver supplies to waiting trucks that make the 100km (62 mile) journey to the Ukrainian border.

The site is considered so sensitive Washington has deployed one of its valuable Patriot air defence systems to protect the airfield

RAF and Luftwaffe team up for Russian intercept. More NATO involvement always a positive.

I think Putin's plan was to meat grind the prisoners vs. housing & feeding them. Less expense.

Hard to believe Russian parents don't see & realize what is happening to their kids & revolt to the mass executions.

If the combat operations were over Russia then you'd have a point. Very little chance of a pilot being captured in Ukraine. It's not like a hundred Afghan women come out and chop you up if you get shot down, they will be heroes the moment they hit the ground from everyone in the area unless they parachute into a Russian bunker somewhere.

That shows the power of the authoritarian state. I’m sure a lot of the parents of Russian soldiers don’t know that their sons have been dead for months.

We aren't sending soldiers or pilots into the war zone.

Even if half-true, losses are staggering....

Meanwhile, Slovak aircraft transfer to UKR happening soon. My guess is UKR already identified highways for dual-use as runways and hiding the birds nearby.

Westinghouse (remember those guys and gals?) now involved with UKR nuke fuel production. Cool.

Someone has to fly the planes to deploy the weaponry being provided by us. And, when those items were gifted, war commentators stated that Ukraine would need jets and pilots. So, now we see the migs we kaboshed months ago being provided and non-Ukrainians stepping up.
