If true, then those expectations probably did more to embolden Putin than to thwart him. It is easy to believe that there are powers at work that wanted the very situation in which the world currently sits.

I even posted quotes/video, like Blinken under Obama responding on what would happen if Russia invaded, which was exactly this. Something along the lines of "there is nothing we could do but fund them; russia would win and exert their will due to proximity, more resources and men"

That agreement makes no legal requirements of military assistance or aid. It carries no weight.
Perhaps you should consider the other, more obvious factors that explain our actions. Start with the level of corruption in the American and Ukrainian governments and then proceed from that point.
Any treaty/agreement is only as strong as the participants are willing to honor it. Putin decided it meant nothing to him. The US and UK decided that it did mean something.
There’s corruption in every government. It’s a part of life. Its depth is determined by the citizens’ willingness to tolerate it. Russians have a long history of tolerating dictators.
They now have one who brazenly kills his opponents in the full light of instant communication around the world. In general, one has to regard the Russians as a stupid people.
In his attempt to make Putin more palatable to the West, Tucker Carlson said that every leader kills people, that it’s expected. Carlson is a pitiable stooge of Putin.
World leaders murdering, imprisoning or banning their political dissidents seems like something we could all stand against whether it’s Putin, Zelensky or Biden[‘s handlers].
Devils advocate, but do you think maybe Carlson thinks leaders killing people is reprehensible and he’s trying to wake the West up to what it’s own leaders are doing, not make Putin more palatable?
Some of us actually think world leaders killing or imprisoning their opposition is wrong. Just because the Biden administration also does it, it does not in anyway make Putin more palatable.
If you support the US leaders killing and imprisoning political opposition and that comparison makes Putin more palatable to you, you’re no better than Putin.
I think Carlson is completely wowed by Putin. His interview of the dictator proves that for me. He definitely seems to subscribe to the idea that an authoritarian leader gives stability to a country.
He doesn’t seem to understand our form of government, three distinct and equal branches that effectively create checks and balances for each other. He definitely doesn’t like the turmoil that is a distinction of our system.

I know that many countries want to influence our elections because of the stakes they have in the outcomes. However, Putin wants to change our system to one where he dictates our interactions with the world.
It’s amazing the success he’s had. Everybody knows exactly what he’s doing but he seems to be untouchable. He is an efficient tyrant.

No, but I’m sure Ukrainian kids, especially the thousands of them who were stolen by Russia in the opening weeks of the war do. He makes for the perfect boogeyman. He’ll poison you, toss you out a high window, crash the plane you’re on, shoot you or, most commonly, send you to the frontline in Ukraine as cannon fodder.

Do you want to see those kids killed in war or is a peace for those kids something you would like to see? The perpetual war that destroys Ukraine for the sake of … what?
Putin is despicable. I wish we had truly acted to deter this invasion, but we did not. And, while I would love for Ukraine to kick Russia’s ass, no one here or any where thinks that will happen. So, is it the lives of those Ukraine kids that we want pummeled before we admit this is a stalemate or, worse, a war that Ukraine will eventually lose?
I read the average age of the Ukrainian military is 43 years old at this point.

And it’s no surprise the people who care so much about children in Ukraine couldn’t care less about those being trafficked over our southern border all day every day.
Let’s just send the military to the Southern border. It accomplishes the goal in Ukraine of funneling money to the MIC and political class, but may also benefit the United States.

An autocracy certainly gives order and stability but at the cost of civil liberties. Our system has always been tumultuous because it was designed by the Founders to be that. When everyone has a voice, it can be deafening but that’s much more preferable to the silence of an autocracy, which has as its loudest sounds the guns of suppression.
There are no winners in this war. Counting both sides, more than 500,000 people have died. All because one dictator of a people who have been historically conditioned to submit to authoritarian rule considers a neighboring sovereign nation to be his property.

The murder of Navalny is a big headache for the Putin Wing of the GOP. They don’t seem to know quite what to do.
Trump won’t decry the assassination and it’s very difficult to spin it as something other than a dictator doing what dictators do. Maybe they’ll use Tucker Carlson’s quote that, “all leaders kill people” to justify it.

It really is weird, the alternate reality the two factions of the country live in.
If you ask me, and likely a broad swath of conservatives, Putin is evil and should be condemned for his actions. Yet people like catemus somehow hear an endorsement.
Then, people like me see the Biden admin and courts across the country targeting Trump, who spent 4 years in office without becoming dictator, and think he’s closer to being Nalvany than he ever was to being Putin. And we see Haley sticking in the race because she thinks Trump will be taken out, through law fare or worse, and she’ll be there as the replacement.
Yet someone like catemus thinks the guy who is the target of the Biden admin and every alphabet agency of the US government is somehow a dictator, and it’s Nikki Haley who needs to worry about being taken out.
I don’t post any of that to convince catemus of anything. There’s no convincing. But I honestly don’t know how we ever bridge the gap between the two sides.
Thinking the guys who left office peacefully after being framed by the intelligence agencies for treason is a dictator is just mind boggling to me.
