Terrence Clarke

the ncaa has so much work to do. last we heard from them they were asking for help. if they can’t protect their product it will be as respected as high school basketball. we get the most games and get the most exposure of 18-22 year olds that aren’t yet professional. they will have to do something. the influx from the virus has the whole mechanism looking out of control.

Graf confirmed there’s something to this. Not 100% obviously but does not look good.

For all we know, Clarke and his camp might just be exploring it. Really doesn't seem like the G-league is a smart move, not only for money, but the chance at exposing a player. The G-League will KILL some player's careers that would otherwise be fine with a year or two in college.

Overseas? Maybe. Seems kind of late to be deciding this, for a kid who never had any inclination of doing so (unlike Green and Todd)

I think we will be fine. The 20th recruit will just look that much better without the top10 stealing the shine.. OR.. that 60th ranked Senior will be in the spotlight.

At this point, I'd rather just get it over with.

Agreed I wish I didn't even know the difference. Just give me the top 20 recruit for 3-4 years and I'll live with the result. If UK and other teams aren't getting top 20 players good riddance we all wouldn't care.

Get me a coach who can develop top 20+ recruits if thats Cal cool if someone else cool. Lets just go.

I have a question though.. How does this work for NBA teams.? If the Rio Grande Valley Vipers offer T Clarke $500k, or whatever.. the Rockets could effectively sign him immediately to play.. basically buying themselves a top5 draft pick. It seems all the players leaving are going overseas, and NOT to the G-League

g league then draft

I'd honestly take the top20 guys for 2-3 years.. just to get SOME consistency going.

And that's a whole other can of worms, that I don't even want to get ahead of my self on until this becomes a "thing": Is Cal up for the task? I've often thought some of the older coaches might bow out if a big shakeup happens.

$300-500k in a year where there may be no college basketball anyway is a no-brainer.

You don't turn down that cash regardless, but you can't even make the exposure/development argument if college hoops is shut down. It's the right decision from every perspective.

Glad we left all those scholarships open last year and played with 7 players against Evansville so we could save room for guys to skip college this year. That’s pretty neat!

Yep. That was the rationale some posters here were using to defend Cal leaving three scholarships unused this year: supposedly we needed to save all those extra spots so that we'd have enough for everyone wanting to play on next year's super-duper-loaded roster!

I thought that was ridiculous reasoning even back when they were saying it ...but, boy, how much extra dumb does it look now?

Probably. If that's the case then none of these top15 players should be going to school. And crazy as it may sounds, fans should start selling rival teams recruits on it. Insane to think we could lose our top guys but other schools wont.

I know its hypothetical but hypothetically speaking what if fall classes were all online and fans werent allowed at games still. Why even go to college if you dont get the college experience? Let alone if the season is canceled. Might as well take your shot at the money

Yeah look at those idiots who didn't predict a global pandemic and based their logic on the existing reality at the time.

jeez.. he had no idea COVID19 was going to be a factor. Every program is scrambling right now. Every single business in the world is scrambling. He made a gamble, and it may have backfired on him. It's not a dumb move.

lol Those top 20 will leave in a year. What happens when a top 30 averages 3.3 ppg and leaves.

Guess I need to change my expectations from here on out if Clarke goes.

Yea I don’t believe for a second it’s a done deal. From what I’m reading, I think there’s a great chance it happens, though. Maybe I’m being pessimistic; hell I know I am, but nothing feels positive right now. I fully expect him to do it.

They aren't going to offer everyone.

There's a certain level of talent and certain type of game that is worth the one year investment, but you've also gotta have a kid who is ready for the lifestyle.

Big difference between the prep school kids that have lived away from home and the guys who dominated their local high school and slept in their own bed and saw their folks every day.

Easy, there's no where TO go. A top30 player, likely won't do so great against college competition to warrant gaudy stats as a freshman, and as far as the draft goes, he'll be going up against the top15 HS recruits (riding the potential factor), 15 Euro players, and then college's top30 players... but that 30 likely won't include the 27th ranked recruit as a freshman.

Now, he will likely leave by year 2 or 3.. but college basketball will be fine with that. It's the 1AD, and players now leaving before even playing a game, that's the problem.

Welcome to the era of none and done. Here I thought it couldn’t get any worse with guys leaving UK too early. Leaving before they ever get here is a whole new level of disappointment.

Anybody seen Brennan Canada play by chance?

Take a breath and a lap. It's a long way until October (and October won't matter).

Last year or the year before the nba allowed the G league to pay players direct from high school up to 125K. This rule isn’t new but the economic circumstances have changed immensely in the last month. I never thought Todd was headed over seas felt like he was g league bound all the way. No way is it going to be easy to just move over seas in the next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if the G league sees a mass influx of college freshman this year. This moment has been inevitable. You continue to live and die by the OAD and sooner or later it was going to burn you big time.

Oh,please. It was ridiculous reasoning even back then without covid-19 having anything at all to do with it.

Anyone who's paid the slightest bit of attention to how things work nowadays should've known there was never ever gonna be any issue with not enough scholarships next year. Only a few naive fools who still absurdly think all our players are gonna come back thought there would be.
