State of 2025 Recruiting

They plan on taking 2 qbs. Saunders is on board with that also.
That begs the question, you know. LOL. With Saunders on board in the class, IMO the chances of signing Ryan Montgomery are low. The Montgomery-UK dialog seems to have cooled off. So who would be the second QB in our class?

Here are some 2025 QBs publicly known to hold UK offers. I am not suggesting all of these offers are committable, and I am not predicting where the uncommitted players will end up.

Wyatt Becker, Chatsworth, CA
Alonzo Esparza, Los Alamitos, CA
Scotty Fox, Mentor, OH
Jaystin Gwinn, Westerville, OH
Austyn Modrzewski, Littleton, CO
Ryan Montgomery, Findlay, OH
Gavin Owens, Rabun Gap, GA
Emile Picarella, Madison, MS
Stone Saunders, Harrisburg, PA (UK commit)
Brennen Ward, Columbus, OH

Modrzewski attended a position camp in Lexington in June and impressed our coaches. FWIW.

Didn't we see this week, pre-Saunders commit, that Montgomery has an August UK OV?

Montgomery has made a lot of UVs to places like UK, GA, MI St, OH St, and PA St. I suspect he will take a lot of OVs too. He has a good relationship with Coach Coen. Under other circumstances, I would think our chances would be fairly good. But with Saunders already in our class, that is bound to change things. It has to. I can't say what Montgomery thinks. I doubt he is scared of competition. But he is a headliner prospect and would probably prefer to be the first QB in some program's class. Just guessing, though.

But it is very unusual for any school to sign two headliner QBs like Montgomery and Saunders in the same recruiting class. Occasionally it happens, but it is so rare that the rareness of it makes me think we are unlikely to sign both of them. That doesn't make it impossible. We don't know yet how far Liam Coen can take our offense. But we can't forget that we already have Boley as well. Even if we had all three, one or more would end up transferring.

If Stoops takes two QBs in this class, it seems to me that the second one should be more of a project with upside who won't get frustrated when he doesn't immediately enter into the starting QB discussion.

It will be tough to sign to high quality qbs. I don't think the 2nd will be Mpntgomery. I don't know which is the better prospect between those two but it seems many prefer Saunders even over Boley. I am just glad they seem to have found a couple good qb prospects. Now need to find a couple OTs to take care of them

Did see Ramsey made it to campus, wonder if he's actually practicing?

IIRC, Newton and Mossakowski were signed in the same class many moons ago. Newton never developed, Mossakowski was never healthy and eventually transferred so you never know but I'd think it's doubtful Montgomery even visits now.

You could be right. Saunders has been a done deal for awhile and Montgomery told JR he was visiting knowing that. Also said he wasn't against being in a class with two qbs

Does UK already lead for any 2025 prospects? Saunders, obviously. Any others? Although there are no guarantees in recruiting, here are some possible situations where UK might lead although I cannot say whether all of these UK offers are currently committable.

Sam Afari, DB, W Chester, OH
Austin Alexander, LB, Union, KY
Mason Alexander, DB, Fishers, IN
Aveion Chenault, WR, Lexington, KY
Rafael Greene, OL, Cincinnati, OH
Isaiah Groves, RB, Cross Plains, TN
Justin Hill, LB, Cincinnati, OH
Tucker Kattus, OL, Cincinnati, OH
Dante McClellan, LB, Canton, OH
Austyn Modrzewski, QB, Littleton, CO
Quinton Simmons, WR, Cincinnati, OH
Makhi Smith, ATH, Versailles, KY
Tayvon Smith, LB, Cincinnati, OH

BTW, look how many of these prospects are from Cincinnati. The Big Dog has great connections up there.

Greene is a very important 2025 UK target because he plays a position of need and has already UV'ed Lexington several times. Kattus, Afari, and Groves are younger brothers of current Wildcats or UK commits.

An interesting recruiting situation is developing with 2025 DB Martels Carter, Jr. Because of family relocation, Carter is transferring from Rome, GA, to Paducah Tilghman hs. Carter is highly recruited and already holds at least eleven SEC offers. He instantly becomes the most heavily recruited instate prospect in the 2025 class. The Big Dog and Coach Collins will be all over this, and it will be interesting to see if UK picks up any new recruiting advantage based on Carter's relocation.

Really looks like the 25 class could be a very, very good one.
It's very early. But getting an early commitment from a headliner QB will help recruiting at every offensive position. Also, it's a good year for talent in OH, and Coach Marrow seems to have a head start in the Cincinnati area.

Still unknown would be what our coaches can get done with Amaree Williams, Tavion Wallace, Anthony Sacca, and Martels Carter. Those guys are major difference makers.

Agree and some of it will be determined by the product put on the field this fall.

Needless to say, each prospect is a different person, with different parents and different ideas about his recruiting process and his list of schools. I have often thought about what factors weigh most heavily in the minds of prospects as they visit campuses. I have read a lot about it. It is a very overwhelming, subjective experience for these hs players, but the factor that seems to come up most often is their connection with the coaching staff.

I'm sure winning is more attractive than losing. But on any given Saturday, a kid could visit Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge and perhaps see the home team lose a game. That can't be scripted. Prospects are picking a school according to where they are most comfortable. That may be about the campus, the academic department they like, the town, the distance from home, the mood in the locker room, the position coach, the coordinator, the type of offensive or defensive system, or scores of other factors. Call it recruiting chemistry. I believe our staff is good at it. I believe the renovated Nutter Center might help. The stability of our coaching staff and the perception of Mark Stoops and the coordinators being ensconced in Lexington definitely help. Maybe a more effective offense will also help. We will see.

2025 appears to be a historically strong statewide class in OH, at least in terms of overall depth and numbers of Power 5 prospects. Stoops and Marrow obviously think so. According to multiple public reports, UK's coaches have already given well over 40 offers to 2025 prospects in OH. Fourteen are in the Cincinnati area, counting W Chester. Six are in Cleveland. Not suggesting all of them are currently committable, but these are large numbers.

To date, the largest number of OH products taken by Stoops and Marrow was eleven, in our 2014 class. In those days, obviously, Coach Marrow was primarily focused on recruiting in OH. It is doubtful Stoops will ever again sign eleven prospects from one state in the same class. But it looks like OH will play a big part in our 2025 recruiting.

I was looking at 25 class in KY. It looks to be deep at the ATH position and not much else, but who knows

2025 looks like a weak class in KY, but Martels Carter out of Paducah, Austin Alexander out of Union, and Aveion Chenault out of Lexington are takes. Montavin Quisenberry out of Boyle Co might be a take if he gets more interested in UK, but we already have a bunch of talented slot receivers. It looks like Isaac Sowells is probably going to be more interested in UL or IU, and that is fine. We need OTs much more than OGs.

I thought Sowells projected as a C?

Might be nice to have him come in behind Keemun.

Sowells projects as an OG but most OGs can make the transition to C as long as they have a high football IQ and enough quickness to block LBs at the 2nd level. I have seen speculation that Sowells is one of those interior guys who could handle C because of his football IQ. But how many centers do we need?

Sowells reportedly holds four Power 5 offers. As the hometown school with the shiny new coach, UL has an advantage. Sowells' father played for IU so they could be a factor if they push for him. I have also seen some speculation that Sowells is listening to WF. But if Coach Marrow really pushes, UK would be right there. I know Marrow has been talking with Sowells. At the end of the day, the question is whether UK actually needs Sowells. This assessment will balance how important it is to sign an instate prospect from Male hs when you already have three scholarships committed to other players at C and also more OGs on scholarship than we can play. On that latter subject, it might matter if Austin Ramsey actually suits up. Ramsey is on campus but is still not listed on UK's official roster. That is probably coming, or else why would Ramsey even be in Lexington? Consider that UK has 4-star instate product Grant Bingham on scholarship but Bingham can't even get practice reps. Plus Johnson, Selm, and Lafontant coming in our 2024 class. If Sowells was an OT, this would be a different conversation. But how many scholarships can we afford to spend on the interior OL? That's going to be the question there.

Agree that OT recruiting (HS) is lacking.

Need to sign two a year and Cats aren’t in on any in the 24 class.

Going portal every year for same position is risky if you don’t get your guy.

I would not assume that our coaches are not in on any 2024 OTs. That discussion is more appropriate for the 2024 recruiting thread, but I will just point out that our coaches cannot publicly discuss who they are recruiting. None of the websites are completely reliable in that way, because they are reading the same stuff you and I are reading. So unless the prospects or their families publicly discuss interactions with UK's coaches, we don't necessarily know about them until there is an OV. Even the OVs don't always get reported. Every year, there are recruiting surprises. But I agree it would be best to sign two true OT prospects every year. It is one of the most important, difficult, and complicated positions on the field.

I`ve read the 2025 class is full of OT`s where as the 2024 class wasn`t. Hopefully we`ll lead for and get Kattus, I've read that Auburn may lead for Wallace which is surprising since his brother is a starter here and Boley and Carter are good friends.

Trevin would be at AU if they hadn't fired his position coach right before ESD.

Montgomery is UGA's top guy for 25, but we took 2 QB in 24, one almost 100% to RS and are going all out for Julian Lewis in 26, we will be lucky to get a sniff from a 25 QB. Lewis likely headed elsewhere because UGA doesn't pay up front like many are.

Tucker Kattus is probably an OG at the next level. Matty Augustine, Owen Strebig, Ameer Yasin, Owen Aliciene, Gavin Bowlin, and Sandale Jackson are OTs. Mal Waldrep and Rafael Greene are probably OTs. Length, agility, and lateral quickness are scoutable tools.

It is way too early to know who leads for Tavion Wallace. He won't sign for another 16 months. He already holds at least 5 SEC offers plus OH St. There will be more offers because he is coveted for his quickness and competitiveness. This is a business decision for him. His brother Trevin almost went to Auburn, and it would be understandable if he is also interest in Auburn which is not far from Jesup. Trevin's presence at UK helps, but Tavion will be even more heavily recruited than Trevin was. Needless to say, some brothers want to attend school together, but this is not the primary consideration for all. We are also recruiting Tucker Kattus, Sam Afari, and Isaiah Groves, all of whom have older brothers who are Wildcats, and Amaree Williams, whose father played for UK. It helps, but we won't get all of them.

QB prospect Ryan Montgomery out of Findlay, OH, has reportedly narrowed his college list to GA, FL, SCar, MI, and PA St. It has been rumored that GA might lead at this point.

Austin Alexander, I know it's early but do we have a shot at this kid ?
There are public reports that Austin Alexander is being seriously recruited now by UK, MD, IL, Duke, UL, and some MAC schools. We are still 16 months from his signing date, and I am sure many other Power 5 schools will recruit him. I believe he will have many options, and doubt his recruitment will end early. But as you can see, UK is currently the only SEC school known to have offered him.

I Read the other day he has visits planned to UNC and Clemson. Along with UK that is supposedly the 3 schoold he is most interested in and recruiting him the hardest. It is early so that may change a lot by next summer

Given his pedigree and his athletic build, I imagine he will eventually be offered by a lot of ranked programs. This won't be a quick or easy recruitment.

Quisenberry is a very small slot receiver prospect holding offers from MI, Ole Miss, VA Tech, and WV, as well as UK. There was a report that he may also have heard from Baylor's coaches. UK already has Anthony Brown, Dekel Crowdus, and Brandon White in the slot for years to come. Brown is going to be a star, and there are still high hopes for the other two. UK needs some bigger receivers, but it is not clear how much we need another 5'8" 160# receiver. That's one reason why Jordan Anthony left. Quisenberry is being recruited by Coach Marrow but it is not clear right now how much mutual interest exists. Quisenberry recently attended a WV camp in Morgantown. But to my knowledge, he has never attended a UK camp. So I am not totally convinced he is a take, although he might be.

Track was 99% behind Jordan Anthony's leaving, that's where his bread is buttered.

Track was certainly a factor for Anthony. But he could have continued to run track and play football at UK if he chose to. The fact remains that Anthony came here to play football, on a football scholarship, but was blocked from getting onto the field. He has a great future as a sprinter, but he already had that at UK. Our track program is on the rapid rise. But he transferred anyway.

But the question was about Quisenberry. And 5'8" slot receivers are not uncommon. Quisenberry has speed, but his most interesting attribute from UK's point of view is that he plays at BCHS. So does Brock Driver, another notable 2025 KY hs player. I'm not sure either of them will be takes, because there are only so many scholoarships to go around and UK's out of state recruiting initiatives have gone on to the next level. But time will tell. As you may know, I am a proponent of taking the best players available. Stoops talks the talk for instate recruiting, maintaining the UK-UL series, and so forth, because he wisely understands these things still have outsized importance for much of our instate fan base. But in his strategig planning, Stoops is thinking aggressive expansion of our recruiting base and SEC East Championship.

KSR reported that Quisenberry was at camp this summer and showed out. I think it was his second camp here if I remember correctly. I was also told by Luckett that he is a take for UK, but obviously idk if that's true.

Re Jordan Anthony, I recall reading post-transfer that one reason he moved on was Lexington's cold weather in the Spring prohibited him from practicing for the outdoor track season, wanted a warmer clime. Whether true or just BS, I don't know. Unfortunately I don't recall where I read that. Here's the thing with Anthony...if, and the operative word is "IF", he has world class speed, track is the route he'll likely travel. Lots of money to be made in "amateur" Olympic level track. Think Lexington's own Tyson Gay.

As for guys like Quisenberry/Driver...I trust Stoops and staff to make the right call.

Me too. They have earned it. I believe our 2024 class will just keep getting better and better with each new commitment in the fall, when Stoops and Marrow will be careful with remaining scholarships. And with Stone Saunders already on board, our 2025 class should be very interesting as it unfolds. Looks like Coach Marrow has already piqued the interest of a bunch of very good hs players in Cincinnati. One 2025 instate prospect to watch is Martels Carter, a DB at Paducah Tillman hs who just relocated to Paducah from Rome, GA. Carter's recruitment appears to be wide open at this point. He reportedly holds at least nine SEC offers and does not necessarily have a strong link to UK other than the recent move to Paducah.
