State of 2022 Recruiting

When a UNC fan comes here with a 3 loss team that many thought had the talent to be fighting for a CFP berth and claims that his team out-recruits UK and will always out-recruit UK, the only conclusion one can make is that the UNC fan believes UK’s staff has out-coached and out-developed the UNC staff to start a season 6-1 and ranked.

Lol. Might wanna make sure you can beat our little brother by at least a FG before you gloat too much.

And yeah it's pretty obvious you're salty over our recruiting. But honestly you're probably never going to recruit as well as us. We have a strong brand in-state (NC typically has more HS talent than KY), and historically we've had the better program. Congrats on the hot start though!

ETA: BTW YOU'RE the one that started the thread about the RB. So, it's not like I was off topic or derailing a thread - like you just did tonight.
Sorry. Next time we win we will win by more just for you

Kentucky's class is already ranked #16 by the new on3 consensus (their version of 247's composite) that just premiered today. And that doesn't even include DeCarlos Nicholson as a commitment. I'm thinking that maybe they don't have Juco profiles created just yet. Anyway, pretty impressive. Also, Dane Key is ranked #290 overall and #228 by the on3 consensus, so he will get added after his commitment later today.

Seems like On3 rates people a lot higher than Rivals or 24/7.

Especially Kentucky recruits. Could it be where they bought KSR causing some bias?

I haven't really looked at who else they own, but I wonder if they're recruits are getting higher rankings than Rivals and 24/7 as well.
Guess that is something that would have to be looked at over time. They hired Chad Simmons, formerly of Rivals, Scout, etc to be their director of recruiting. Chad has been in the business a very long time and is good at what he does.

I just found it interesting that they were calling Barrion Brown a 5* and #2 WR in his class, and he's a 4* barely top 10 in the other services. When you see something that widely different it makes ya wonder ya know?

Speaking of bias, I think it is statistically clear, now, over a significant period of time (2016-2021) that we are performing in the top half of the SEC. Yet, our recruiting has left us 12th in the SEC for 4 and 5 Star players, over that period.

So, which is true: (1) Stoops and Co. are turning bronze to gold; or (2) Our recruits have consistently been underrated?

Maybe a mix?

I agree that it is a mix. Stoops has developed a stable program that has done a good job of recruiting guys that are the right fit and that can be developed. Also, while I don't buy into the argument that UK commits have their rankings sometimes dropped a bit because they're committed to UK, I do think that they are sometimes undervalued a bit versus if they were committed to certain other schools.

I'm going with a mix of both. Coaching stability is also a big part of the equation. Coaching turnover (for most schools) creates new systems, high player turnover, and bumpy first couple of years.

Has Stoops (1) benefited from coaching turnover; or (2) caused some coaching turnover? I'm going with ... both.

Staying with recruiting theme ... improved recruiting combined with our coach's record of developing players will result in a better program. Excited to see how today turns out. Stoops and Coen are proving they know how to utilize speed. Receiver is probably our weakest recruiting area so far. I'm excited to see last year and this year's class. I think there are some serious playmakers in the bunch.

To be fair there it seems there one troll instigating it so maybe he should have his privelidge of posting here revoked.
In that case, I'd suggest reporting that person to a mod, or if you know that they are just trolling, don't respond. A troll is only a troll if they can get a rise out of people, so if you don't respond, they typically go away.

IMO, that's the bulk of it. Assumptions are made based on the school they committed to, especially when they fall outside of the top 100-200 kids. Add to that the kids that don't hit the camp circuit hard, the recruiting analyst are left evaluating them on film if at all in many of those cases. While not perfect, offers is a better indicator of talent.

There is a reason many of us look at various recruiting services. I tend to like the 247 composite, however I know they do not take On3 in that calculation as of right now. I basically compare rivals to 247 composite. Screw ESPN, but will now start to pay attention to On3 rankings. But it really means nothing but team rankings, which sometimes I like to see get higher. However, with Stoops track record of development, being 30th or 15th is a little irrelevant to our program. And now with transfers, it makes recruiting rankings even more irrelevant.

Highly academic is really not a true statement. It's a middle of road at best Davidson co public school. It's a lot like Lou. Central. They would be 2 or 3a in KY.
I lived in Nashville for 15 years and I have lived in the suburbs for another 11 Pearl Cohn is a magnet school. If he did not have good grades he would not be in a magnet school. You can call it middle of the road all you want but a high school in Nashville proper with a population of 670 students is pretty damn selective. I have not heard of recruiting within Davidson county public schools in years like over 20 years. However schools in Williamson county such as Ensworth and Brentwood Academy do recruit. Many lower income students and their family have been moved to the high rent district thanks to those schools.

Saying all of that I'm sure high school recruiting still goes on but not to the level it once did. @BlueRaider22 can probably weigh in more on this and especially in Rutherford County where I believe we both live. Our little town of Murfreesboro, about 160k population, has four rather large high schools and high school football is a big deal here. These four schools have around 2,000 students each and if I'm not mistaken a couple are larger than that. They have rezoned a few times and one school in particular got really good for a few years because of it. I know of a few students that travel a great distance across town to go to a different high school than they are zoned for to play sports.

If you look at the rankings overall very little separates classes like between 13-27 or so.
It's only the top 5 who really separate themselves from the rest.

We need to somehow find a way to start landing these guys. Only way would be to

Turn pros out of your program
Win big consistently
Players coach that you want to play for
Style of play that is pro'esque
NIL deals to reward players choosing you
Training facilities
Fan base
If injured will be taken care of
Career after football
Academic base and tutors
Living quarters

Some of the things that would interest me if I was a recruit.

Yes, let's try to keep this thread focused on UK's 2022 recruiting class.

Current 2022 recruiting class-

Alex Afari, ATH, West Chester, OH
Jordan Anthony, slotR, Tylertown, MS
Grant Bingham, OL, Paintsville, KY
Tomiwa Durojaiye, DL, Middletown DE
Tyreese Fearbry, LB, Pittsburgh, PA
Kiyaunta Goodwin, OL, Charlestown, IN
Nikolas Hall, OL, Austin, TX
Josh Kattus, TE, Cincinnati, OH
Treyveon Longmire, ATH. Corbin, KY
DeCarlos Nicholson, DB, Perkinston, MS
Jackson Smith, K, Danville, KY
Andre Stewart, DB, Kennesaw, GA
Destin Wade, ATH, Spring Hill, TN
Keaton Wade, LB, Spring Hill, TN
Brandon White, slotR, Cincinnati, OH

All college football coaching staffs focus on developing their teams in August, September, and October, because that is their meal ticket. Typically, there are certain times of year when recruiting heats up. During Mark Stoops' time in Lexington, we have learned to anticipate multiple verbal commitments in May-June and November-December.

We are entering a period of time when we can anticipate multiple important commitments. This evening, Lexington WR Dane Key will commit to UK. Key's UK commitment has been expected for months, and I have commented on him here many times going back to the earliest recruiting news for Stoops' 2022 class. In case anyone doesn't know yet, Dane is Donte Key's son. Donte Key was a pretty good UK football player in his time. Key will need to work on his body and get stronger, but he has a good future in UK's balanced offense.

At least three other major uncommitted prospects have been closely connected with UK lately (Barion Brown, Aamil Wagner, Deone Walker).

Walker's history is interesting. He is from Detroit, and he is huge. In hs, he has played OT and DT. Walker has received at least nine SEC scholarship offers. Originally, Walker's UK recruiter was Steve Clinkscale. When Clinkscale left UK and took a job at MI, many assumed Walker would sign with Jim Harbaugh and play in Ann Arbor. But UK's new OL coach Eric Wolford has done an amazing job recruiting Walker. Recently, Walker said in a published interview that he is currently favoring UK. It is generally believed that Walker would initially be developed at UK as a NT, with the option of moving over to OT if that became a better role for him. I don't believe Walker is a slam dunk for UK yet, but UK obviously has the inside track right now. Walker would be a great addition for our class, and it would be reassuring to see UK continue to snatch top players away from the state of MI even after Clinkscale's departure. Fingers crossed.

Brown is a highly regarded WR from Pearl Cohn hs in Nashville. He is also being recruited by Coach Wolford. He has received at least eleven SEC scholarship offers. At one time earlier this summer, he held a committable scholarship offer from Alabama. I believe that window has closed because Alabama's staff is focused on other receivers now. But Brown is an excellent prospect. Some talking heads are publicly projecting Brown to UK now.

Wagner is the younger brother of former Wildcat Ahmad Wagner. He is a skinny OT prospect from Dayton. Earlier in the year, there was some commentary that Wagner had enough speed and athleticism to be developed as a TE in college. Since then, he has added some weight and is now starting to look more like a legitimate OT prospect. At one time or another, Wagner has held at least four SEC offers and ten B10 offers. Wagner will need some physical development but has a very high upside. His recruitment has been quiet lately, but OH St insider Bill Kurelic has booked a crystal ball prediction for UK.

Here are some other uncommitted 2022 prospects who are known to have been actively recruited at one time or another by UK's coaching staff-

Quinton Conley, WR, Kansas City, MO
Joshua Josephs, LB, Kennesaw, GA
Grayson Morgan, OL, Nashville, TN
Jawaun Northington, RB, Louisville, KY
Elijah Reed, DB, Louisville, KY
Andrew Saaviinaea, DL, Graham, WA
Elijah Zollicoffer, OL, Covington, GA

Yeah, it was it back in the 80-90s. I was recruited to play at Father Ryan but couldn’t do it because of the drive. Later on in the late 90’s, early 00’s, I was an Athletic Trainer for Blackman and Riverdale High Schools in Murfreesboro. Blackman was terrible back then. But Riverdale was awesome. Their head coach (Gary Rankin) won the state champion just about every yr. He would recruit at times, but mostly players would flock to his program. He later was passed over for the Middle Tennessee State position, got mad, moved to Alcoa where he coached Randall Cobb and won more championshi.

He is at on3. Ranked #73.
Rock_Cat78 . I want ask you something. PLEASE don’t be offended by this but I’ve been wondering for a while. I‘ve noticed you post often on the HOB . Well, I'm no insider. I just do a lot of research and follow things closely and form my thoughts and opinions based on a lot of different sources. I've never been compensated in any form or fashion by Cats Illustrated.

Well thanks for what you do . Has anyone ever asked you to not share everything on this board?
