I don't get this love affair with Tom Jurich, the soon-to-be-gone athletic director at the University of Louisville.

Or at least I hope he's soon to be gone.

Don't get me wrong. I can see the construction that has gone on along Floyd Street and Third Street, with all kinds of fields and stadiums where there used to be worn-out industrial buildings and dirty convenience stores.

He deserves credit for that.

And I know that several programs have risen to national prominence on his watch, including the school's baseball team and its women's basketball team.

Credit there, too.

But at some point, don't we all – including some of the big-money donors to U of L athletics who are waging a public relations campaign to save Jurich's job – have to say enough is enough?

It's not just strippers in dorms. It's not even just the federal investigation into paying players thousands and thousands of dollars to play amateur athletics.

At some point, you've got to hold responsible the people who are responsible.

Consider one of the biggest defenses Jurich’s supporters offer up: His programs make money. Guess what? It’s not true. The latest reporting from my colleague, Andrew Wolfson, shows that when you get right down to it, Jurich runs a money-losing program.

And while he and his family were walking away with millions of dollars from U of L and crazy perks that are way out of line with what other athletic directors get, Jurich needed millions of dollars that should have gone to academics to balance the athletics budget.

In the 2015-2016 fiscal year, the university had to kick in $7.4 million to balance the athletic budget, more than any of the other 24 largest college athletic programs in the nation.

That didn't even account for the money that was being funneled through other university accounts to pay Jurich's son, Mark Jurich, in a weak attempt to avoid the appearance of nepotism.

This, while only five other top 25 schools receive any money from their universities, and many others actually send cash to the schools to fund academic programs.

I wonder what UofL fans would've said back in 1989 if UK boosters openly campaigned for Cliff Hagan to keep his job?

Hmmmm.....

What will be funny is when Kentucky is named the most profitable basketball program in the nation.

Why would anyone send their child to that university? What goes on at UL is not something recently revealed, hasn't it been common knowledge for decades they were a corrupt institution? Is a degree from that school worth anything any more?

I have a friend who's sister went to UL. I believe she is a speech therapist. She's totally disgusted and afraid of the whole situation. Things like this do have an effect on regular students degrees. If I were hiring between a degrees from Virginia, Texas, and Louisville, at least right now, I probably pass up the UL degree. There's just too much uncertainty on that campus.

I do apologize for those of you with UL degrees that worked hard. My intent is not to portray you as a fraud, just to shine the light on how this effects so many.

We were actually considering UL for my daughter because they had a financial package that was appealing to us, but when all this broke, we stopped looking into it. Who knows what their ability to offer a financial package will be in 12 months

Smart move. No way I would encourage a child of mine to go to that place.
